Part II Course Details 1. Abstract Hematology is the study of blood cells in normal and disease conditions. This course is designed to be a brief introduction of the basic science as well as practical applications of hematology. The course introduces basic theories and processes of blood cell development and the physiology of hemostasis. Another focus of the course will be diseases that are associated with blood cell abnormalities including current understandings of disease mechanisms. The course also covers a wide variety of techniques involved in the diagnosis and management of blood cell disorders including routine hematology tests, result analysis, classification and monitoring of blood cell abnormalities. The combined teaching of both basic knowledge and clinical laboratory practice will foster knowledge-building as well as skilldeveloping experiences for the students. 2. Course Intended Learning Outcomes (CILOs) (CILOs state what the student is expected to be able to do at the end of the course according to a given standard of performance.) No. CILOs # Weighting* (if applicable) 1. Recognize the basic biology of hematology including principles in hematopoietic stem cell physiology and development. Familiar with the mechanisms of blood cell maturation and differentiation and the regulatory pathways of blood cell development and hemostasis. 2. Know the differences between normal and abnormal blood cells. Able to associate blood cell abnormalities with certain diseases and understand the pathogenesis of major blood cell diseases. 3. Employ skills to carry out routine hematology laboratory tests including test design, sample collection, sample quality control, data acquisition, data analysis, data interpretation/report and regulation/quality compliance. 30% 30% 40% Discovery-enriched curriculum related learning outcomes (please tick where appropriate) A1 A2 A3 * If weighting is assigned to CILOs, they should add up to 100%. 100% # Please specify the alignment of CILOs to the Gateway Education Programme Intended Learning outcomes (PILOs) in Section A of Annex. A1: Attitude Develop an attitude of discovery/innovation/creativity, as demonstrated by students possessing a strong sense of curiosity, asking questions actively, challenging assumptions or engaging in inquiry together with teachers. A2: Ability Develop the ability/skill needed to discover/innovate/create, as demonstrated by students possessing critical thinking skills to assess ideas, acquiring research skills, synthesizing knowledge across disciplines or applying academic knowledge to self-life problems. A3: Accomplishments Demonstrate accomplishment of discovery/innovation/creativity through producing /constructing creative works/new artefacts, effective solutions to real-life problems or new processes.

3. Teaching and Learning Activities (TLAs) (TLAs designed to facilitate students achievement of the CILOs.) TLA Brief Description CILO No. Hours/week 1 2 3 (if applicable) Lectures Basic knowledge will be taught mainly by lectures. Tutorials A forum for problem solving by applying the knowledge learned from the lectures. Group Students will be divided into groups and each presentations group will present a talk about a blood disease. Laboratory practice for basic techniques Experiments designed to teach the students basic laboratory techniques in hematology. Laboratory practice for clinical tests Mid-term quiz Practice for performing hematology laboratory tests in a clinical hematology laboratory setting. A short test to evaluate the students learning outcome. 4. Assessment Tasks/Activities (ATs) (ATs are designed to assess how well the students achieve the CILOs.) Assessment Tasks/Activities CILO No. Weighting* Remarks Continuous Assessment: 60 % 1 2 3 Assignment 10% Laboratory report 30% Group presentation 10% Mid-term quiz 10% Examination: 40 % * The weightings should add up to 100%. 100% "Minimum Passing Requirement" for BMS courses: A minimum of 30% in coursework as well as in examination, in addition to a minimum of 40% in coursework and examination taken together.

5. Assessment Rubrics (Grading of student achievements is based on student performance in assessment tasks/activities with the following rubrics.) Assessment Task Criterion Excellent (A+, A, A-) 1. Assignment The number of correct Accurately answers and the quality answered all the of the answer. Well organised text and coherent logic. Good (B+, B, B-) answered >80% Adequate (C+, C, C-) answered 60% to 80% of the Marginal (D) answered 40% to 60% of the Failure (F) the assignment on time. Or correctly answered < 40% 2.Laboratory report 3.Group presentation The design of the experiment. The completeness of experimental records. The execution of the experiment and the interpretation of results. The content and the style of the presentation. Handling of Subject is well researched and the content is well organised. The writing is logical and coherent. > 90%. substantial. The writing is logical and coherent. between 75% and 90%. sufficient. The writing is easy to understand. between 60% and 75%. correctly presented but lacks details. The writing is not easy to understand. between 50% and 60%. the essay on time.
