1 City University of Hong Kong Information on a Course offered by the Department of System Engineering and Engineering Management with effect from Semester A in 2012 /2013 Part I Course Title: Safety and Maintenance Management Course Code: SEEM4104 Course Duration: One Semester Credit Units: 3 Level: B4 Prerequisites: Nil Precursors: Students are expected to have either some working experience in management or taken management equivalent course(s) Equivalent Courses: Nil Exclusive Courses: Nil Note: Students may repeat a course, or an equivalent course, to improve course grade only if the previous course grade obtained is D or below. Part II 1. Course Aims The aim is to provide the fundamental requirements, basic elements as well as managerial perspective to safety and maintenance issues and introduce an effective strategy for practical safety, maintenance, reliability and hazard related management according to OSHA regulations so that the students are capable of selecting suitable safety and maintenance management systems for public utilities and industries.

2 2. Course Intended Learning Outcomes (CILOs) Upon successful completion of this course, students should be able to: No. CILOs 1. Recognise the importance of safety and maintenance management to public utilities, transportations, building services etc., 2. Understand the philosophies and international compliance on safety and maintenance issues; 3. Use of common safety inspection, fault diagnosis, reliability, and hazard evaluation methods and 4. Formulate a safe, reliable, hazard free and cost-effective managerial strategy for selected system operating in a particular kind of public utility and industry. Teaching and learning Activities (TLAs) Activity Type: Lecture/Tutorial/Laboratory Mix: Timetabled Activity Lecture (2); Tutorial (1hr for 6 weeks) CILO No. Lectures Tutorials Presentation Total (hours) CILO CILO CILO CILO Total A total of 26 hours, which are evenly distributed in 13 weeks, are devoted to lectures and presentations. There are 22 hours for the lectures and 4 hours for the presentations. The works of tutorial involve 6 hours and will be evenly distributed in a time span of 6 weeks. The content of lectures will roughly follow the topics covered in the Section of Keyword Syllabus with case studies for illustration purpose Tutorial works will include special talks that are given by experts in maintenance and safety management, software simulation and group discussion with topics that are related to the four CILOs. At the end of the lectures, a term project must be accomplished by the students. The term project is related to the development of an effective strategy in safety and maintenance management for a given type of system operating in a particular kind of public utility and industry. To work on the tutorials and the term project, the students will form groups with a group size of no more than 5 students. A group report that has detailed description on the design, the architecture and the expected achievements of the term project must be submitted by each group. Besides the report, presentations will be held for each group of students to

3 report and demonstrate their achievements of designed strategy at two different stages. The first and second presentations will be held in the middle and at the end of the semester respectively. Attending the presentations is compulsory. During the presentations, comments will be given by the course examiner and other students. Marks will be given to each group based on her responses to comments, the quality and the style of the presentations. 4. Assessment Tasks/Activities CILO No Term Project and its Report Tutorial Presentation Total (%) CILO CILO CILO CILO Total (%): Grading of Student Achievements: The grading of achievements is on a 100% course work basis. The portion of assessment is divided as 30% for the tutorial, 20% for the two presentations, and 50% for the term project and its report. The assessment of the term project will depend on the degree of understanding the problems, the appropriateness of suggested methods to the given problems, the suitability of the designed strategy for safety and maintenance management, the possibility of accident prevention, as well as the cost effectiveness, the committed resources and long term effect caused to the company. After each tutorial session, each group of students must submit a summary to comment the content of that tutorial session. In each summary, the students must provide their views on the pros and cons of the learned tutorial materials and how there materials can contribute to the design of their effective strategy for maintenance and safety management as proposed in their term project. For the presentations, the content, the style and the clarity of presentation as well as the response to the comments will contribute to the final assessment of presentations. Each group of student is allowed to submit her summaries and term project in group report format. To facilitate individual assessment, besides the group reports, each student in a particular group must submit his own detailed section of contribution (called individual section ), which can be attached to the term project s report. In the individual section, each student must define clearly his role, the amount of work done by him, and the portion of his own contribution (in percentage) in completing the term project. The student should also include his own discussion and conclusion in the report to verify his degree on understanding the tutorials and the term project. Hence, the final mark given to each student may be varied due to his actual contribution and achieved efforts toward the completion of the summaries and the term project.
