Frequently Asked Questions Welcome to the 2014 USODA New England Championship regatta We are excited to welcome sailors from across the country to this exciting week of sailing in Newport. Sail Newport has the fortunate opportunity to host such regattas due to a strong relationship with Fort Adams State Park and the Department of Environmental Management. We ask all competitors and their families respect the park and abide by all instructions from park rangers. Can we arrive early to practice? Unfortunately, no. Boats can arrive Monday (August 4) no sooner than 1030. With the busy weekend of the Jazz Festival and over 10,000 guests on Sunday, Fort Adams will be extremely busy leaving no room to unload and leave boats. Please respect this request as we prepare for the regatta. Competitors arriving Sunday may leave their boat trailers at Rogers High School (15 Wickham Rd, ). The school has ample parking and is only 1.5 miles from Sail Newport/Fort Adams. Where and when do we unload and load Optis? Boats will be unloaded in the pick-up/drop off parking area by the triangle near the Sail Newport Main Office (please see attached map and follow posted signage on site). Immediately after unloading boats, trailers and tow vehicles must be taken to the parking lot to make room for other arriving competitors to unload. Where do we park cars? All cars and trailers to go in the upper parking lot (see map). There is no parking on any of the roads that border the boat storage area or on the grass. Violators will be ticketed and/or towed by park management.
Where can I store my trailer? Trailers should be parked in the upper/back rows of the parking lot adjacent the Triangle (please see attached map). Please leave the bays closet to the Opti area open for cars. Will there be security in the boat storage areas? No, but it is safe to leave your boats on the property. DEM Rangers intermittently patrol the park 24 hours/day. Most sailors will leave their equipment inside their boats, but it is up to each individual. There is no special insurance covering theft of private property at the regatta site. Are spectator boat opportunities available? Where can I charter an Opti? There are no official spectator boats. Zim Sailing will have boats available for charter. Please contact Bob Adam (bob.adam@zimsailing.com) for details. Where can I rent coach/support boats? McLaughlin - Visit their webpage (http://www.optistuff.com/) then click Charters Sturgis Boat Works - Please call their main office - (508) 778-9187 There are a limited opportunities for powerboat charters in Newport. Powerboats may be available from: coachboatmanagement@gmail.com Are there any Coach Boat and Support Boat guidelines we should be aware of? See NOR 14 for details regarding coach and support boat etiquette. 14 Coaches and Support boats 14.1. One coach boat for every ten (10) sailors and fraction thereof from a sailing program may be registered. (For example a program with eleven sailors would be allowed to register two support boats.) 14.2. All coach boats shall register and obtain a numbered flag supplied by the Race Committee that must be flown from a staff at all times while on the water. A $20 cash deposit will be collected for each flag and is refundable unless the flag is damaged or lost. Each coach boat shall have a working VHF radio, an anchor suitable for anchoring in the waiting area, and a basic first aid kit.
14.3. The conduct of coaches, parents serving on Race Committee (including safety patrol), registered support boats, and all other boats including spectator boats will be governed by the Sailing Instructions. In addition, all boats should make sure they have the following items aboard their boat at all times to avoid possible ticketing by DEM Marine Enforcement: Registration numbers and license, capacity plaque, fire extinguisher, life vest for all occupants, horn or whistle, anchor and boating safety certificate from your home state. Is dockage available for coach/support boats at Sail Newport? Yes All coach/support boats under 20 may dock at the Alofsin Piers at no charge. The Piers are located approximately 0.5 miles north of the Ft. Adams Beach where the competitors will launch There is plenty of car parking adjacent the piers. There is no sign up process needed for dockage. Boats will receive spots on a first-come, first-served process. Where is the Official Notice Board located? The Official Notice Board will be located in the Regatta Tent by the beach. When and where will results be posted? Results will be posted on the Official Notice Board in the Regatta Tent by the beach. Results will also be online at www.sailnewport.org. There will be no results posted for Green Fleet. Where will protests be held? Protests will be heard in the Mule Barn. Will I be able to see racing from Fort Adams? No. Racing will take place north of the Pell Bridge in Potter Cove. Where can I launch coach/personal boat? Power boats can be launched using the deep water ramp (see map). Police and Fire help? Call 911.

We encourage you to fill your tanks at the local Shell station (560 Thames Street, ) on your way into Ft. Adams before launching your coach/ support boats. Once in the water, fuel can be purchased at Newport Yachting Center, Bannisters Wharf, or at the Goat Island Marina. All monitor VHF 09 (Hours: 0730-1930 daily) Where can I find hotel information? Discover Newport s website has a great list of local hotels. www.discovernewport.org/hotels-and-motels For international sailors, do we need an USODA number for the event? Sail Newport is committed to embracing sustainable practices. You will find recycling bins in all areas of the sailing center. Outside of the sailing center, there are no trash/recycling bins in other parts of Ft. Adams State Park, as the Park maintains a Carry-In/Carry-Out Policy. In addition, there are two Zip2 Filtered Water Stations for refilling water bottles/ jugs, etc. One is located at the Regatta Tent and the other adjacent the boat storage area.
