Merit Badges and Advancement Opportunities Advancement is one of the primary reasons young men remain in Scouting. It is a measure of success and achievement in the program. How to Make it Happen with Your Scouts 1. Before summer camp, know the advancement status of each boy. 2. Set a goal with each young man - challenge him!!! 3. Encourage older, more advanced Scouts to assist the younger boys. 4. Keep accurate day to day advancement and attendance records (at home and at camp). 5. Make sure your Scouts have all materials necessary to successfully complete each merit badge. 6. Each scout is expected to read and study the merit badge pamphlet before coming to class. Ensure each Scout has the necessary merit badge pamphlets and that they are brought to merit badge classes. 7. In addition to bringing the merit badge pamphlet to class, the scout is expected to bring a notebook and pen/pencils for taking notes, maintaining a notebook (if required) and/or writing reports.
