How to use the orange recycing service 1 Rinse 2 Pease make sure a items which have contained food or drink are cean Fi up your bags You may use as many orange bags as you need for your recycing each week 3 Tie your 4 bags Securey tie the top of the bags this heps to reduce itter Coection Pace your bags out on your norma coection day next to your back wheeed bin Need more bags? Towards the end of the ro, you wi find a yeow sticker. Pease write your house number on it and pace it on one of your fu recycing bags and put it out for coection. Pease make sure the sticker is visibe so the recycing crew can eave you a new ro. If you have communa recycing bins, you don t need orange bags. Items can either go into the bin oose or you can use a carrier bag or simiar. Your bins and bags need to be out by 7.00am on coection day. Pease put them out the morning of your coection to hep keep your street tidy.
Things you need to know about your recycing service Can I put my bags out before my coection day? No, your back bin and orange bags shoud ony be put out on the street on your coection day. What if I have more than one bag to put out? You can use as many orange bags as you need. Do I have to put each materia in a separate bag? No, each bag may contain any mix of recycabe materias. Why do I need to rinse out items? Rinsing items ensures that any food waste is removed. This is important because it reduces smes and wi ensure that the recycing is not attractive to rats, foxes and other animas. Food waste wi aso contaminate the materias in your orange bag, which may mean that we cannot recyce them. What shoud I do with arge bits of cardboard? Large pieces of cardboard can be fattened and paced under your orange bags for coection. If the bag breaks, wi the coection crew pick it up? The orange bags are speciay designed for recycing and are strong. However, if there is a spiage of waste on the footpath or road, the recycing crew wi either attempt to cean it up themseves or they wi report it so that it can be ceaned up by our Ceansing Services team. How do I get more bags if I have ost my sticker? Don t worry if you don t have a yeow sticker you can get more bags by visiting eicester.gov.uk/orangebags or caing 0116 454 1002.
What if I am unabe to put my bags or bin out for coection? If you are edery and/or disabed and cannot present your orange bags at the kerbside for coection, you can request an assisted coection. Pease contact us on 0116 454 1002 to discuss your situation and ways in which we may be abe to assist you. What happens if I put the wrong items in the orange bags? If an orange bag is bady contaminated with food waste or garden waste etc, the recycing crews wi not be abe to coect it. They wi put a note through your door expaining how you have contaminated the recycing. They wi then inform a separate crew who wi coect the contaminated recycing and where possibe, recyce it. What happens to my recycing? The recycing coection in the orange bags is sent to a Materias Recovery Faciity (MRF). At the MRF, the recycing goes through a number of processes to separate out the different types of materias, incuding: Bag spitter - opens any bags and breaks up the recycing for sorting. Optica sorters and air jets - these identify and separate the different types of pastic. Fiters separate cardboard and gass. Magnets and eddy currents separate ferrous and non-ferrous metas. Picking ines some items are sti checked by staff on a picking ine. This heps to ensure quaity and reduce any contamination. Once separated, the materias are baed and sent on to the next ocation where they wi start to be recyced. We try to ensure as much as possibe is recyced in the UK.
Genera waste bin What shoud I put in my back bin or genera waste bin? Pease put a the items which you are not abe to recyce in your orange bags into your back wheeed bin or genera waste bin, incuding: Food waste Nappies Broken gass Poystyrene Other genera waste What happens to the waste in my back bin? Your back bin waste is not sent directy to andfi. After we have coected your back bin waste it is taken to the Ba Mi where it is sorted. This aows more waste to be diverted from andfi, incuding the organic food waste which is composted in an anaerobic digester. The composting process produces a soi conditioner for use on recaimed and and methane which is used to generate eectricity. Pease remember to take your bin off the street as soon as possibe after your coection.
Items you can take to the Househod Waste and Recycing Centres Househod Waste Recycing Centres If you have access to a vehice, you can use our Househod Waste Recycing Centres to recyce many items of househod waste incuding: * ** Househod Waste Recycing Centres are for househod waste ony however, there is a chargeabe Trade Waste faciity at Gypsum Cose. * Ony cement bonded asbestos which has been doube wrapped in pastic wi be accepted at Freemen s Common Househod Waste Recycing Centre. Disposa of asbestos must be booked in advance on 0116 454 6750. ** Househod and garden chemicas wi ony be accepted at Freemen s Common. What shoud I do with my househod batteries? Pease do not dispose of them in your back bin or orange bags because they contain toxic materias. You can take them directy to the Househod Waste Recycing Centre but you can aso recyce them at most shops and supermarkets. In the ong-term, why not consider rechargeabe batteries instead? What shoud I do with energy saving ight bubs? Pease do not dispose of them in your back bin or orange bags because they contain sma amounts of hazardous materias. They can be recyced at the Househod Waste Recycing Centres.

Garden waste coection service Leicester City residents can sign up for an optiona garden waste coection service which provides you with the opportunity to recyce your garden waste, such as eaves, twigs and grass cuttings, using a green wheeed bin. Things you need to know: Coections are fortnighty between March and October (incusive) and the service costs 30 for the first year. You can register for the service at any time of the year. Subscriptions wi need to be renewed every 12 months. You wi be provided with a 240 itre green wheeed bin to put your garden waste in. We wi issue you with a simpe coection caendar showing you which week you need to present your bin for coection. Buky waste coection service Are your items reusabe? If so, you may be abe to donate them to our furniture reuse scheme. To find out more information and whether your items wi be eigibe, pease mention Pass It On when you ca to book your coection. Leicester City residents can book one free of charge coection in any two month period. Things you need to know: We wi coect up to 5 buky items e.g. a sofa, mattress, fridge etc. or up to 15 bags/ bundes of garden waste free of charge.* Coection is arranged on a day to suit you. Pease et us know of any access issues to your property when booking. There are some items we cannot coect such as rubbe and soi. Pease check before you book your coection. We wi ony coect the items you have tod us to coect, so pease ensure the description you give us is accurate. Garden waste must be bunded or bagged so that each item does not weigh more than can be easiy ifted by one person. If the waste is to be eft outside before coection, pease ensure it is covered to stop it becoming water ogged and too heavy to ift.
