3 Grade 3, Spring 2012 Section C: Reading Night Noises Grow! Groan! The noises started me from a sound seep. In a singe motion, I sat straight up in my seeping bag. A bear, I thought, outside the tent! The sign at the entrance to the Agonquin Provincia Park campground had read: CAUTION. YOU ARE IN BEAR COUNTRY. KNOW THE RULES AND FOLLOW THEM. Just ahead we had seen the trash area with containers that ooked ike giant stee maiboxes. The park naturaist tod us that bears used to rummage in the trash for food unti the park instaed these bear-proof containers. Since then, bears rarey came to this area. But I heard one now. What shoud I do? The first thing was not to panic. I must stay cam. OK, it was too ate for that. What next? My mind raced. I ganced around the tent, and in the dim ight saw my mom, dad and itte sister sti seeping. Shoud I wake them and take a chance that the commotion woud draw the bear s attention? I decided to et them seep. If I woke them and we ran, the bear woud surey run after us. Bears can run fifty kiometres an hour for short distances. I didn t think I coud Student Booket: Language 2 3
4 Section C: Reading Grade 3, Spring 2012 I sat in the dark, not moving a musce. My ears istened so hard they ached. It shoud have been safe here. We had foowed a the rues. The pamphet we got from the naturaist had said: In bear country, be carefu of food and odours. They attract bears. Campers aren t supposed to eave any food out. We had wrapped our food boxes in pastic and ocked them in our car. After dinner we had gone for a wak and taken a our garbage to the bear-proof containers, so the sme woudn t draw bears to our campsite. Grow! Snort! A new wave of fear raced down my spine. What was the bear doing? I coudn t hear it moving about, ony grunting and growing. Maybe it had found something to eat. Grow! Snort! Moan! The bear didn t seem to be coming coser, but it was sti out there. My mouth was so dry, I fet as if I d eaten my piow. I was cod and shaking with fright. Why coudn t someone ese have been the one to wake up? The we-being of your entire famiy is an awesome responsibiity. What if I made the wrong choice and something terribe happened? I coudn t stand the strain any onger. I had to wake my parents. They woud know what to do. I eaned cose to Dad to wake him, but at that instant I heard a man s voice. 15 Grade 3, Spring 2012 Section D: Reading The Zamboni A Zamboni is ike a huge razor bade on whees with a buit-in towe on the end. It gives an ice rink a cose shave to resurface it. This heps stop chipping, which can make a hockey puck bounce and ice skates wobbe. It makes the ice fresh and smooth for payers Student Booket: Language 2 15
16 Section D: Reading Grade 3, Spring The Shave The big bade shaves the surface of the ice. How much ice does it cut off? It a depends on the state of the ice. The rougher it is, the more the bade shaves off. 2 Whisking Up the Shavings A arge screw coects the ice shavings, or snow, so they don t pie up on the ice. It feeds them into the snow tank at the front of the Zamboni, and ater they re dumped out. 3 Washing Up The Zamboni cruises around with two water tanks. As the bade shaves, water from one tank fows to a squeegee-ike conditioner behind the bade, which smooths the ice and foods it with water to fush dirt out of any deep cuts in the ice. The dirty water is vacuumed up and any eftover water is squeegeed off. 4 The Hot Towe Finish A huge towe behind the conditioner spreads hot, cean water from the second water tank.
