"THE BOOK OF REVELATION" Chapter One OBJECTIVES IN STUDYING THIS CHAPTER

Transcription:

In The Invisible Tower, Artie Kingfisher discovered he s actually King Arthur, brought back to life in the 21st century to save the Otherworld and our world from total destruction. If you want to keep up with Artie and his adventures, you ll need to know your way around some people and places from King Arthur s time! You haven t encountered all of these in the Otherworld Chronicles, but general knowledge of Arthurian Legend will come in handy. This A Z guide will get you started. A: Avalon The island where Excalibur was forged, and where Artie must travel to reclaim his throne. B: Bedevere The first Knight of the Round Table. C: Camelot King Arthur s famed castle and court. D: Dragons Legendary and dangerous! fire-breathing, winged creatures.

E: ARTHURIAN LEGEND A Z Excalibur The magical sword of the true king of Britain (Arthur, of course). F: G: The Fisher King The wounded king who watches over the Holy Grail. Artie hasn t yet begun his quest to find the Holy Grail, but in the third and final book in the Otherworld Chronicles, he ll learn more about where the Grail is hidden and what guards it. Guinevere King Arthur s beautiful queen. Although Guinevere isn t in the Otherworld Chronicles, Artie does have a strong girl by his side at the Round Table his sister, Kay! H: I: J: Holy Grail A holy goblet long searched for by Arthur s knights, especially Lancelot. Igraine King Arthur s mother and also the mother of Morgan le Fay, one of three children by her first husband, Gorlois. Joust A medieval sport in which lance-wielding riders attempted to unhorse their opponents. There s not much time for sports while Artie is trying to save two worlds from destruction but he and his knights do get to spar against dummies to practice their battle skills!

ARTHURIAN LEGEND A Z K: L: M: King Arthur The great ruler who defended Britain against the Saxons in the sixth century. Lancelot The most famous Knight of the Round Table, also known as Lancelot du Lac ( Lancelot of the Lake ). Merlin The wizard of King Arthur s court, and one of the king s advisors. N: Otherworld O: Nyneve, the Lady of the Lake Gave Excalibur to Arthur and once tricked and enchanted Merlin. The world of spirits, a paradise of feasts and eternal youth. Known as Annwn in Welsh. P: Pendragon King Arthur s family name.

Q: Quest A heroic journey, often in search of an artifact like the quest for the Holy Grail. R: Round Table The table at which Arthur and his knights convened. Its shape showed that all the knights had equal status. S: Squire A knight in training who assisted the knight with his armor, weapons, and horses. Artie and his friends aren t technically squires, but since they re all new to this knight thing, they spend a lot of time training. And who needs a squire when you have Bercilak to show off all the cool weapons that are waiting at the court-in-exile? T: U: Tom Thumb A tiny man no taller than his father s thumb, who spent much of his life as a knight in King Arthur s court. Uther Pendragon Arthur s father, and king before him.

V: W: Vortigern A warlord who seized the throne of Arthur s uncle, Constans until Uther Pendragon returned to help win it back. Thankfully, Vortigern doesn t make any unwanted appearances in the Otherworld Chronicles with Morgaine trying to steal his throne, Artie already has more than enough to worry about! Wales Now part of the United Kingdom, Wales was also a part of King Arthur s empire. Many historical Arthurian accounts are in Welsh. X: EXcalibur! (What do you mean, we already used that?) Y: Z: Y Ddraig Goch A red dragon, the national symbol of Wales. Still featured on the present-day Welsh flag. There are no red dragons in the Otherworld Chronicles but with Tiberius (the green dragon), Scarm (the purple dragon), and Fallown (the golden dragon) there s plenty of fire-breathing drama! Zzzzzz... You re still reading this? Good work!
