NetSmartz Race to the Finish

NetSmartz: Race to the Finish Children will learn, practice, and discuss the concepts they learned in the NetSmartz online activities by racing towards the finish in this fun and educational Internet safety game. Materials A game board, game rules, 4 game pieces, 72 activity cards, and 6 numbered rules cards are provided. One coin; one package of four-color index cards or construction paper in red, yellow, green, and blue; one folder with pockets (optional); scissors; and glue are needed before starting the game. Number of Players Two players or two teams Note: When playing in teams, members should take alternate turns. Objective To be the first player to reach the finish with all three rules cards. How to Make the NetSmartz Board Game print the game board, game rules, game pieces, activity cards, and rules cards. Note: Click on links to access materials. cut the pocket out of one side of the folder and glue the game board there. Use the remaining pocket to store the game pieces, cards, and game rules. (If materials are laminated, it may not be necessary to glue the game board to the folder.) glue the activity and rules cards onto the index cards or construction paper using the key below. o action cards = yellow o opinion cards = green o question cards = red o discussion cards = blue o rules cards = white glue the game pieces onto index cards, or construction paper, and cut them out. Note: Laminating the game board and cards will make paper materials more durable. Game Instructions the players/teams should flip the coin to see who goes first. to move, the players/teams will flip a coin. If the coin lands heads up, the player/team gets to move ahead two spaces. If the coin lands tails up, the player/team gets to move ahead one space. as the players/teams advance they will land on color spaces, numbered rules spaces, or Nettie or Webster spaces. o when a player/team lands on a color they should pick up the corresponding color card and give it to the other player/team to read aloud. After the player has answered the question or followed the directions, it is the other player s turn.

o all players must agree that the answer was correct or player tried his or her best to answer. Encourage players to play fairly and kindly. o if the card directs the players to move ahead, they get another turn. o when players land on a Nettie or Webster space, they should follow the directions for moving ahead spaces and take another turn. o when players land on a numbered rule space, they get to keep that rule number. the players/teams should continue around the board until they reach the finish. if a player reaches the finish without one of the three numbered rules cards, he or she must return to that numbered rule space on the game board, pick up the rule, and proceed from there. the first player/team to reach the finish with all three numbered rules cards is the winner.

NetSmartz: Race to the Finish Game Rules for Kids To WIN, be the first player to reach the finish with all three rules cards. Number of Players 2 players or 2 teams Game Rules Flip the coin to see who goes first Flip the coin to move HEADS? 2 SPACES TAILS? 1 SPACE When you land on COLOR SPACE? RULES SPACE? NETTIE/WEBSTER SPACE? Pick up color card and give to other player/team. Collect rules card. Follow directions on the board for moving forward, and pick a card. The other player or team decides if you responded in the best way that you could. If it is decided that you didn t, you must stay on that space and pick another card on your next turn without moving. If you are missing a rules card when you get to the finish, you must go back to that rules space, pick up the card and start your next turn from there. The first player/team to get to the finish with all three rules cards is the winner!

Rub your tummy, cross your eyes, and say Look-At-Dis Louie 5 times quickly! Repeat this in Clicky s voice, Howdy partners, I m Clicky, and I want to teach you to be safer on the world wide web. Pretend you re Clicky and make the clickclick sound. When you read the next card, click like Clicky before and after every word. Spin around four times while saying, Don t be a Potty-Mouth Pete with each spin. Hop on each foot five times. Move your figure to any blue space on the board. Move your figure to any red space on the board. Move your figure to any green space on the board. Trade places with the other player/team on the board.

Move to the nearest rules space, and pick up that rule card if you don t already have it. If you do already have it, your turn is over. Oh no, you opened spam! Go back to a rules space for a rule that you already have. You downloaded a picture from someone you don t know, and it contained a virus that crashed your computer miss a turn. Oh no, Meet-Me Mack tried to meet someone offline! Give one of your rules cards to the other player, if they need it. You think you may have chatted with someone like Wanta-Know Wally. You tell a trusted adult. Go to the nearest Nettie or Webster space to remind them to look out for people like Wanta-Know Wally online. Yikes! Potty-Mouth Pete said rude and mean words to someone using your screenname. Lose a rule card. You get an E-mail from Nettie. Move ahead one space. You saw something online that made you feel uncomfortable and told a trusted adult. Move ahead two spaces.

Who would you rather hang out with, Nettie and Webster or the Webville Outlaws? Which do you like better, hanging out with friends or playing games on your computer? Who s meaner, Look-At-Dis Louie or Wanta-Know Wally? Who has better netiquette, Nettie or Meet-Me Mack? Who would you rather chat with, your best friend or Wanta-Know Wally? Who has a better hat, Meet-Me Mack or Potty-Mouth Pete? Who would you tell if something online made you feel uncomfortable, Potty-Mouth Pete or a trusted adult? Who would you invite to a party, Nettie or Look-At-Dis Louie?

Would you rather listen to, Cowboy Clicky s Country Song or Opera Singer Meet-Me Mack s Classical Music? What would you get Webster for his birthday, 20 spam E-mails or this Internet safety game? What do you like better, playing sports with your friends or playing chess against the computer? Who do you think would make a better friend, Look-At-Dis Louie or Meet-Me Mack? Who would you rather talk to in a chatroom, Nettie or Potty-Mouth Pete? Which would you rather learn about online, lions or baseball? What would you put on your own web page, a picture of your pet or a picture of your favorite movie star? How would you know if you are becoming a Potty-Mouth Pete? Would it be because you were nice to people online or used rude and mean language online?

Who is Look-At-Dis Louie? What is Nettie s brother s name? Look-At-Dis Louie is one of the Webville Outlaws who sends pictures of things that are mean and ugly, that kids don t want to see. Webster Can talking to a Wanta-Know Wally be harmful? Why? What can you do to keep from being a Potty-Mouth Pete? Yes. Wanta-Know Wally will try to get personal information about you and your family. Do not give out your personal information to people like Wally online and tell a trusted adult. To keep from becoming a Potty-Mouth Pete you should not use rude and mean language on the Internet. Use your netiquette.

What is a Meet-Me Mack? Meet-Me Mack is someone who tries to get you to meet him somewhere. Tell a trusted adult if you run into a Meet-Me Mack on the Internet. What does Wanta-Know Wally do? Wanta-Know Wally tries to get personal information about you and your family. Don t give out your personal information to people online and tell a trusted adult. What do Nettie and Webster do? Nettie and Webster teach us how to be safer on the Internet. What does Look-At-Dis Louie do? Look-At-Dis Louie sends pictures of things that are mean and ugly, that kids don t want to see.

What is spam? Spam is junk E-mail sent to lots of people. Sometimes it has pictures of stuff that kids don t want to see. When is it OK to give out your personal information online? It s only OK to give out your personal information when you have your parents permission. What are some bad things that can happen online? People can lie about their age and who they are to get kids to meet them alone. Also E-mails or instant messages can contain things you don t want to see or viruses that can hurt your computer. What could you do if someone online tries to meet you offline? Tell a trusted adult and remember not to give out personal information online.
