Make sure you sign the declaration at the back of this pack at the end of your final session working on this task. 2 Essential Application of Number Skills Level 2 controlled task SAMPLE 1

Task instructions: Compare the costs of holidays What do you need to find out? The scenario Two of your friends are planning a holiday next February. They would like to go to Rome (Italy) or Cairo (Egypt). They have asked for your help in planning the holiday. The aim of this task is to: investigate the costs of a one week holiday in each city compare the costs of car hire compare the temperatures in each city investigate the cost of car hire use conversion rates for currency make decisions based on your findings What you need to do Part 1 Make a detailed plan to show how you will do this task. You should consider: What information do I need to find? Where can I find the information? What calculations will I need to do? How will I present my findings? For Parts 2 and 3, you must show all your workings for calculations. You must also show how you have checked a range of calculations. Part 2 Work out and compare the costs of accommodation and flights for two people to Rome and Cairo Present your findings in a suitable way (Table, Comparative/Component Bar Chart or Pie Chart, Diagram or Line Graph) Find the total cost of car hire for 3 days. Your friends have a 7% discount voucher to use for car hire. Essential Communication Skills Level 2 controlled task SAMPLE 1 3

Work out the average and range for the maximum temperatures and the minimum temperatures for one week in February 2015. Use your results to compare the temperatures in Rome and Cairo. Present your findings in a different way (Table, Chart, Diagram or Graph) Find a suitable source to convert currency between o British pounds and the Euro for Rome o British pounds and the Egyptian pound for Cairo. Use your findings to create and present a suitable graph, table or chart to help your friends convert different amounts of money into the local currency. State clearly where you found your source. Part 3 Explain what your results mean Describe how your methods and results meet the purpose of your task Recommend which city you think your friends should visit on holiday and give reasons why Resources you should use: Source 1 Table Cost of accommodation and flights for a number of hotels in Rome and Cairo Source 2 Formula For car hire costs Source 3 Bar Charts Highest and lowest temperatures in Rome for the same week in February 2015 Source 4 Primary data: Your own source for conversion rates between: British Pounds and Euro for Rome British Pounds and Egyptian Pound for Cairo 4 Essential Application of Number Skills Level 2 controlled task SAMPLE 1

How will you do it? 1) You need to carry out calculations from at least two of the following categories: A. Amounts or sizes B. Scales or proportion C. Handling statistics You may use a calculator for some of the calculations but should also use manual methods in some instances. Show how you have checked your methods and calculations Work to a level of accuracy appropriate for the situation 2) You must include at least five of the following: Carry out calculations involving two or more steps, with numbers of any size, with and without a calculator Use mental arithmetic involving whole numbers and simple fractions Work with, and convert between fractions, decimals and percentages Calculate with sums of money and convert between currencies Calculate within a system and between systems using: Conversion tables and scales Approximate conversion factors Use proportions and calculate using ratios Compare sets of data of a suitable size, selecting and using the mean/median/mode as appropriate Use range to describe the spread within sets of data Understand and use relevant formulae Calculate efficiently using whole numbers, fractions, decimals and percentages 3) You must then choose how to present the results of your calculations, using two different and appropriate ways from the following: Tables Comparative/ Component Bar Charts or Pie Charts Line Graphs Diagrams Essential Communication Skills Level 2 controlled task SAMPLE 1 5

You must: Explain why the ways you have chosen to present your results are appropriate to meet the purpose of the Task Present your methods and findings effectively Explain what your results mean and how and/or if the methods and results met their purpose and were appropriate to the task 6 Essential Application of Number Skills Level 2 controlled task SAMPLE 1
