Yonsei University Courses Political Science & International Studies POL2101 Ancient and Medieval Western Political Thought The course examines the political ideologies and the backgrounds of principal thinkers from the era of Homer to Luther. POL2103 International Institutions and Organizations The course examines the processes of which the international order reforms itself to preserve peace in the international arena and achieve international cooperation. It analyzes the history, development, function, structure and roles of international institutions and organizations. POL2104 Modern History of International Relations International Relations methodologies are examined from the beginnings of Western diplomacy to the Versailles Structure. POL2105 Literature and Politics An analysis of the relation between literature, literary imagination and political change. Special emphasis placed on the study of concepts such as power, freedom, justice, love, and political community. Also, students attend politically motivated plays. POL2106 Comparative Politics General knowledge of the theories and methodology of comparative politics, with emphasis on topics such as the types of political systems, political development and integration, political culture and socialization, political recruitment, political communication, interest articulation and aggregation, policy making and implementation. POL2107 Introduction to Civil and Social Movement This course examines Civic and Social movements in Korea. The Late Chosun Dynasty, Japanese Occupation, Post-Liberation, Democratic Transition, and Democratic Consolidation periods are studied so as to explore the interaction between the political and social realms in Korea as well as to predict the prospect direction and growth of the movement in Korea. POL2108 Introduction to Diplomacy General introduction to the evolution of diplomacy, diplomatic institutions, diplomatic and consular functions, diplomatic privileges, immunities, diplomatic documents, international civil administration, international conferences and negotiation. POL2109 Politics in International Society The course examines changes in political concepts, political behavior, political process, power relations, the role of the state, international relations with the coming of the information revolution era. Also deals with the characteristics of information society and their implications for the future from perspectives of both optimism and pessimism.

POL2110 Introduction to Political Theory An introduction to the basic concepts, ways of logical thinking, and methods of analyzing and constructing arguments or theories for understanding political theory. POL2111 Research Methods in Political Science The course examines major approaches in political science. The possibilities and limitations of historical, institutional, functional and behavioral approaches are examined. Special emphasis will be placed on quantitative methods. POL2112 Political Economy of the Developing Countries Changing roles and implications for Third World countries in the emerging, interdependent global order. POL2113 Civil and Social Movement in Korea Civic and Social movements during the Late Chosun Dynasty, Japanese Occupation, Post-Liberation, Democratic Transition, and Democratic Consolidation periods are studied so as to explore the interaction between the political and social realms in Korea. POL2114 Korean Politics A general introduction to Korean government and politics from 1945 to the present, with emphasis on political culture and socialization, elections and voting behavior, interest groups and political parties, National Assembly and legislative behavior, government and public policy making, bureaucracy and policy implementation, and international environment. POL3012 Korean Political Economy The interaction between political and economic factors in the development of Korea will be the focus of this course. Through comparative analyses, the characteristics of Korean political economy will be delineated. POL3036 Korean Party Politics The course reviews political parties and party systems in Korean politics, including party functions and organization, party platforms, finance, leadership, factions, and the relationship with political development. POL3101 Theories of International Conflict Systematic analysis of theories of international conflict and examination of various kinds of conflicts or wars. POL3102 Quantitative Methods in Political Science This course reviews the theory of quantitative methods used in political analysis. It teaches students basic statistics and applications, theory construction and research design, and data collection and analysis.

POL3103 International Political Economy This course covers international politics from the perspective of political economy. It covers such issues as the monetary and trade systems of the West, the North-South confrontation, the East-West economic relationship, the energy question, resource nationalism, technology transfer, and the dependency theory. POL3104 Early Modern Western Political Thought The purpose of this course is to trace the development of political thought from the rise of the modern state to the 19th century. POL3105 Oriental Political Thought An introduction to various schools of thought from the pre-ch'in period to Sung Neo- Confucianism and Korean and Japanese adoptions. POL3106 International Relations in Northeast Asia The course examines the broad changes within the international arena, especially focusing on the interaction between Northeast Asian countries, especially the tensions of the Korean peninsula and other territorial disputes. POL3107 Russian Foreign Policy Changes and continuities in Russian institutions and foreign policy making processes will be studied. Russian relations between major countries of the Northeast Asian region will also be explored. POL3108 Russian Politics A study of the political history, ideological background, political leadership, political institutions, and political process of Russia and other former Soviet republics. Special emphasis is placed upon the rise and fall of Communism, the process of the disintegration of the Soviet Union, and the transformation of its political and economic system. POL3109 American Politics and Foreign Policy An introduction to the fundamentals of federal governments with principal emphasis on political cultures, institutions and their functions. POL3110 Theories of Democracy This course analyzes comparative studies of democratic theories and their implementation within the democratic modern society. POL3111 North Korean Politics Analysis of the political ideology, governmental institutions, party structure, political behavior, and foreign relations of North Korea. POL3112 Comparative Political Economy Both Marxist and Non-Marxist theories of Political Economy will be dealt with, tracing their development and current applications.

POL3113 Media and Foreign Policy This course aims to cover the influence of media in foreign policy and vice versa as well as the basic frame of this reciprocal relationship. POL3114 Theories of Foreign Policy General introduction to concepts of isolation, neutralization, alliance, and nonalignment approaches, levels of analysis, goals and objectives, and other determining factors, such as international systems, geography, resources, science and technology, pollution, ideology and ethics, decision making processes and societal sources. POL3115 European Politics The political structure, institutions, and processes of the West European countries of Great Britain, France, Germany, and Italy are studied. Also studied is the process of the transition from the Soviet dominated socialist system to a more liberal one experienced by various East European countries. Also examined are the prospects for the political integration of the European Community. POL3116 Japanese Politics and Diplomacy An analysis of the development of contemporary Japanese politics and trends and issues in Post-World War II in Japanese foreign policy will be explored. In particular, issues of modernization, the American Military Government, and the process of democratization are emphasized. Also studied is the role of political parties, the Diet, the business community, and interest groups in formulating policies as well as the future role of Japan in the international community. POL3117 Theories of Political Changes A comparative analysis of the theories of political change as they appear in class analysis and pluralism. Also analyzed are the theories of realists such as Niebuhr, critical theorists such as Habermas, and postmodernists such as Foucault and their critique of Marxism. Based on this study, theories of democratic change which were put forward in Korea since 1987 are analyzed. POL3118 Chinese Politics and Foreign Policy The development of contemporary Chinese politics as well as changes and continuities in the Chinese foreign policy making process and institutions will be studied. The traditional order, modernization, and communism are studied based on which the current efforts of the Chinese government toward liberalization, reform, as well as control will be analyzed. Chinese relations with major countries of the Northeast Asian region will also be explored. Also studied is the possibility of the success of a socialist development model. POL3131 Post-Modern Political Thought The course criticizes and searches for alternative methods to Liberalism and Capitalism such as Collectivism, Post-Structuralism, etc.

POL3119 Middle Eastern Politics Political culture, institutions, processes, and development of various Middle Eastern countries will be studied. The influence of Islam on international politics will also be explored. POL3120 Korean Foreign Policy This course reviews Korean foreign policies since 1948, with emphasis on historical methods as well as analytical methods. POL3121 Korean National Assembly and Elections The history and characteristics of the Korean National Assembly as well as elections will be studied. The course will evaluate the level and quality of democratic politics in Korea through the analysis of the most representative democratic institutions of Korea. POL3123 Korean Political History Historical developments of Korean politics from traditional society to the establishment of the modern nation state. POL3124 Contemporary History of International Relations This course covers western diplomatic history from the period beginning with the treaty of Versailles through World War II when open diplomacy started. The diplomatic history during the closed diplomacy period will be dealt with separately on a topical basis. POL3125 Contemporary Political Thought The course studies and analyzes the political thinking and ideology of the 19th and 20th Century. Idealism, Conservatism, Liberalism, Anarchy, Socialism, Communism and Nazism are some of the main topics. POL3126 Politics and Cinema Analyzing the world of politics through movies is the main focus of this course. Movies with topics dealing on Democracy, Totalitarianism, elections, International Relations, Third World Country Politics, wars and so on will enhance students perspectives of the aforementioned topics. POL3129 Market, Authority and Culture in East Asia An analysis of the dynamic economy and politics of Northeast Asia is carried out within the context of autonomy, market and culture. The course requires students to analytically criticize the important experiences of political economy in Northeast Asia. POL3130 Korean Political Thought A general review of the tradition and characteristics of Korean political thought with emphasis on Confucian ruling theory in the Yi Dynasty, Western impact on Korean political thought, and Korea's response in the 19th century.

POL3132 Political Theory and Philosophy An analysis of fundamental issues or major theories in political philosophy. POL3133 Theories of the State The course deals with existing theories of the modern state and various issues pertaining to the relationship between the state and society. The theories focus on classical, pluralist, neo-marxist, statist, and civil societies. The issues examined are the state-capital relations, the welfare state crisis, the emergence of new social movements, the role of the state in the Third World and postindustrial society. POL3134 Diplomatic History of Korea and East Asia This course analyzes the changing processes of Northeast Asia s international political history after the 19th Century. It focuses on key events and state diplomatic policies that have turned the order around in the region. POL3135 National Security and Intelligence Theories and practices of national security will be studied in order to understand and analyze the Korean situation. How intelligence gathering activity affects national security and the role it plays will also be explored.
