4 Course Descriptions ( ) Theories of International Relations* (3cr) Traditional and Contemporary I.R. Theories and analysis of international political behavior, including: power theory, balance of power theory, Systems Theory, strategic theories, economic theories, psychological theories, communication theory, game theory ( ) Research Methodology (1) (3cr) This is an advanced course in methodological, theoretical and technical issues in Political Science. The course focuses on philosophy of social sciences and research ethics, comparative methods in international studies, and on combining qualitative and quantitative methods. Students will study research design, techniques of data collection, sampling and measurement, report and proposal writings, statistical analysis with computer application game theory in addition to different methods and techniques of futuristic studies in politic science and international relations. ( ) Foreign Policy (3cr) The political-diplomatic behavior of selected states: the United states the Russian Federation, France, the United Kingdom, Germany, Japan, the People s Republic of China; as affected by personality of decision makers, leadership, political and economic resources, military strength, and international standing. ( ) International Political and Economic System (3cr) The development of power relations among nations; international politics in various historical eras, beginning with ancient Egypt, passing to the medieval and modern eras, and the present international system, including the Britton woods conference, which resulted in the I.M.I and the International. Bank. The course will delve into the historical development of GATT, W.T.O., the economic problems of the third world, and current international economic relations. ( ) Diplomacy and Negotiations (3cr) Diplomatic theory, the Conditions and prerequisites of diplomatic action; the patterns of diplomatic and negotiation activities; case studies, regionally as well as internationally; treaty making designed for international cooperation; peaceful resolution of conflicts. ( ) Theories of Comparative Governments* (3cr) Theories of government systems, their applications, and government behavior in managing internal relations. This course will concentrate on the attributes of governments which include western liberal democracy, as reflected in parliamentary and presidential systems; dictatorships theocracies; national socialism; fascism, and communism. ( ) Political Development (3cr)
5 The development of various national political societies through comprehensive stages. The patterns of development through the world, include the liberal, fascist, socialist, militaristic, and the developing state; the horse-rider theory, the mutual theory resulting from current forms of international cooperation. ( ) The Political System of Jordan (3cr) Analysis of the background sources of Jordan s political system, the historical development of the political institutions and constitutional life in Jordan; Jordan s foreign policy in various spheres, including the Arab region, Islamic circles, and the international sphere, with reference to the Arabic-Islamic affiliation of Jordan s leadership. ( ) Western Political Thought (3cr) The development of western political thought in ancient, medieval, and modern ages, In-depth study of political thinkers of the successive civilization. ( ) Arab Islamic Political Thought* (3cr) The political and cultural history of the Arabs and Muslims examining the sources of Islamic thought such as religious scripts, the writings o f theologians during the pax Islamic era of the Caliphate, the Political thought of Muslim theologians in modern times, including Afghani, Mohammad Abdu, Hasan Al- Banna, Sayied Kutub, as well as the roots of recent Islamic movements. ( ) Geopolitics (3cr) This course aims at providing the students with a greater understanding of the International Politics subdivision geopolitics, how it works, how it can be used to assess the capabilities of a state, a region, or a union of states in terms of their domestic and foreign policy orientations. Different aspects of the geopolitical approach will be analyzed considering geographical, cultural, and temporal differences. The students are expected to finish this course with a greater knowledge on how to assess geopolitical issues, improve their understanding of foreign policy and international system analyses. ( ) Public International Law (3cr) This course aims to present a view of public international law, which covers principle and rules that govern the relation between states and other international actors. The course is designed to give students a global understanding of the rules governing international relation and, ultimately, provide them with practical skills in the legal reasoning and arguing, research and writing on international issues. The course will provide students with solid information by comparing international law to the domestic law, who are the actors in international legal system, and then student will be aware of to whom does international law apply. ( ) International and Regional Organization (3cr)
6 The ideas and theories of International and regional organizations, the Justification for their creation, functions. Their place in international law, examples such as league of Nation, the United Nations and its specialized agencies, the Arab league, the organization of African Unity (O.A.U), the organization of Islamic conferences, the European union and various regional economic organizations. ( ) Research Methodology (2) (3cr) This course is designed to focus on the methodological problems and the basic theory in the analysis micro and macro in political science through a combination of analytical methods qualitative and quantitative 0 as the course focuses on the key issues the following scientific methodology to study political science: the design of scientific research techniques to collect information, the ethics of scientific research, logic and philosophy of research in the social sciences, design and selection of samples and measuring variables, writing reports and scientific research projects, in addition to the basics of statistical analysis in political science and computer applications 0 ( ) The Arab World and International Politics (3cr) Arab international relations, Politically and economically, as well as the elements that effect these relations, their nature, such as inter-arab relations, the relations between the Arab world and the U.S.A, Europe, and the non- Arab Islamic world, the development of these relations in view of the strategic effects impacting the Arab world.
