We will study Russian geography, religion, folk culture, art, architecture, literature, music, and dance, as well as attitudes toward the world, all set in the context of Russian history and Russia s relationship with the West. Student learning outcomes: Students upon completing the course will be able to explain the impact of ancient, pre-christian Russian culture, Russian geography, Russian Orthodox Christianity, and foreign invasion (especially the Mongol invasion and occupation) on Russian history and culture, and discuss the expression of that culture in the arts in icons, architecture, literature, music, dance, and secular painting. They will be able to discuss how the past has shaped the Russia of more recent times, and also the origins of Russia s complex and divided attitude towards the modern West.. Course requirements: 1) Students will be expected to read the assigned readings by the date indicated in the schedule below. When we read literary texts--novels, stories, folk tales--students should bring the text to class. Reading assignments from the reading packet (available at Johnny Print) are indicated in the schedule below in bold type. 2) There will be several brief quizzes, including unannounced quizzes on the daily reading. 3) There will be a mid-term exam and a final exam. These examinations will be based on lectures and readings, and may include short-answer identification questions and short essays. 4) Students will be required to write two papers, due on dates indicated in the syllabus: Paper No. 1 must be about Tolstoy s story, Master and Man, and must quote from it and from Massie (3 or more pages). Draw on the entire story, but focus especially on chapters vi through ix. What attitudes and values characterize Nikita, and what attitudes and values characterize Vasilii Andreevich? What attitudes and values may be considered typical of Russian culture, based on Tolstoy s story, and what values are shown as alien to Russian values? Paper No. 2 must trace a theme of this course. Find and describe, using specific examples, a pattern that unifies the course. Start thinking about this assignment at the beginning of the course, and begin gathering materials (such as potentially useful quotations) for it. The paper must draw on the entire course. The paper must quote from multiple chapters in Massie, and also from the literary texts in the course. It must also include examples from Russian art and music (4 or more pages). Policy on submission of papers: papers should be submitted to me in my office by 5:00 p.m. on the day they are due.

Grading: Grades will be assigned according to the following percentages: Mid-term exam 20% Paper No. 1 20% Paper No. 2 20% Class participation/attendance/quizzes/work sheets 20% Final exam 20% Grading scale A 90-100 B 80-89 C 70-79 D 60-69 E below 60 Assignments missed due to a personal emergency may be made up. See the instructor. Midterm grade statement: Students will receive a midterm grade approximately halfway through the course. Hopefully it will consist of the average of grades for Paper No. 1 and the midterm examination, and be ready by the ninth week of the course. An earlier midterm grade might include only the grade for Paper No. 1. Attendance policy More than two unexcused absences may result in a lower grade, at the discretion of the instructor. (Students who ignore this may be disappointed with their grade.) Policy regarding excused absences: A planned absence can be excused if you notify me before the day you plan to be absent. The only excused absences are those that result from l) serious illness 2) death in the family 3) University-related trips 4) major religious holidays. In the case of University-related trips and major religious holidays, the absence will only be excused if the student notifies the instructor prior to the anticipated absence. Policy on verification of absences: A medical absence does not require notification prior to the absence but will later require medical documentation (a date-stamped form from the University Health Services). Any absence requires paper copies of official documentation. For a death in the family, the appropriate documentation consists of an obituary. For serious medical illness, appropriate documentation consists of a date-stamped statement from University Health Services. Documentation of serious illnesses or deaths in the family must be submitted no later than one week after the day of the missed class. If a single illness causes you to miss more than one class, you need a note from a doctor explaining this. Course Policy on Academic Integrity All assignments and papers completed by the students should be the product of the personal efforts of the individual whose name appears on the corresponding assignment. The minimum penalty for plagiarism or cheating is a zero on the assignment. Make-up policy Assignments missed due to a personal emergency may be made up. See the instructor.
