What colonies made up New England? o The New England Colonies were: Massachusetts New Hampshire Connecticut Rhode Island o Geographically, these colonies were the farthest north. What issues could arise from their geographic location? The two groups that settled New England were the: o Puritans: Want to totally reform [purify] the Church of England. Puritans who believed only visible saints [those who could demonstrate in front of their fellow Puritans their elect status] should be admitted to church membership. o Pilgrims/Separatist The Separatist (Pilgrims) of England felt that they needed a clear break from the English Church. Because the Church of England enrolled all the king s subjects, Separatists felt they had to share churches with people who did not believe in Christianity. Therefore, they believed in a total break from the Church of England. Describe the difference between a Puritan and Pilgrim: Geography of the New England Colonies: o Soil condition: rocky and infertile Due to colder climates, there was a short growing season. This meant that farmers usually only grew enough crops to feel their own family. However, there were a numerous other natural resources such as lumber and cod. The forest could provide lumber for New England, which led to a large shipbuilding industry. The Atlantic Ocean had lots of cod, so the fishing industry also grew to be very important. Lumber and cod were also major exports. Describe what geographic reasons prevented the N.E. colonies from growing crops. What did the N.E. colonies do to survive and make a profit?

Society of the New England Colonies: o Religion: Religion was the determining factor for all decisions made in the New England colonies. o There was no separation of Church and State. Education- there were more schools than in the other colonies. Education was given so children would be able to read the bible. Government: government was led by religious leaders and ministers. Ministers were seen as the greatest authority. Government was harsh to people its citizens and many times forced people to leave their colonies and outlawed other religious views. o Low mortality average life expectancy was 70 years of age. o Many extended families. This means that children became parents, then grandparents, and then maybe great grandparents. o Average 6 children per family. o Average age at marriage: Women 22 years old Men 27 years old. o The New England Colonies were also a patriarchal society. This means that authoritarian male father figures controlled each household. Only male, church members were allowed to vote in government matters. The male was seen as the religious leader and decision make in the house. Explain how Puritan society differed from Quaker society: Economy of the New England Colonies: o Because the soil was so rocky and the growing seasons were so short, people relied on subsistence agriculture for survival. o Economic activities in the New England Colonies included: Trading amongst colonies and with other countries. Fishing off the coasts. Shipbuilding because of the available timber produced from the many forest.
