Beyond Time Machine For the first time, Apple Time Machine backups can be written directly to the NAS device through the Internet from any remote location and connected device. Through the new ReadyNAS Remote client, users can now perform remote Time Machine backups from anywhere in the world. Until the introduction of this remote backup capability, users could only perform local backups and required paying a subscription fee for cloud backup. Now, Apple Time Machine users will remain backed up whenever they have an Internet connection without having to use someone else s cloud. A p p e n d i x A How to Setup ReadyDROP The following will show you how to easily setup ReadyDROP on Windows and start sharing files hosted on the ReadyNAS between different devices. For a step-by-step video on how to setup ReadyDROP on a Mac please click here. ReadyDROP works through the ReadyNAS Remote client so the first step is to create a Remote account. Go to https://remote.readynas.com/ and create an account. Once you have created a Remote account, the next step will be to obtain the Remote client for your respective OS. Go to https://remote.readynas.com/download.html and download the right client for your platform. Next, install the ReadyNAS Remote client you just downloaded. During the install the installer will ask you to define a folder for ReadyDROP. For testing purposes the default folder should be fine. 9

After you ve finished installing the Remote client, run the client. You will see the following popup window. Click on the Options button and enter your Remote account credentials. You will now see a pop-up window asking you to create an admin account for Photos II. Enter the information asked and click Update. Now you can click on Start Sharing Photos from the add-on manager or ReadyNAS Dashboard and be able to create new albums and upload photos to them. Now that we have the Remote client setup, the next step is to enable both Remote and ReadyDROP on the ReadyNAS. Login to the ReadyNAS GUI and click on Configure. Next, go to System -> Settings -> Remote Access and toggle the ON/OFF switch in Remote Access to ON. Once Remote is ON check to see if the status is the same as the screenshot below with a live Internet connection and online. If it is, the next step is to add the account you just created to the Access List. 10

Click on the + sign and in the following popup window, enter the email address you registered your Remote account and click Search. Your account name should appear in the search results. Click on your account and click Add. Your account name should now appear in the Access List. The next step would be to enable ReadyDROP. To do this, simply toggle the ReadyDROP ON/OFF button to ON. Once ReadyDROP is enabled on the ReadyNAS, return to the Remote client installed on our host OS (In our example a Windows PC). You will now see a Remote icon in the taskbar. (If you don t see it, manually run the Remote executable from the Start Menu) 11

Right click on the Remote icon to bring up the Remote menu. There you will find a menu item to Open ReadyDROP. This opens the ReadyDROP folder. Alternatively, you can also click on the ReadyDROP shortcut on the desktop. 12

By double clicking on the shortcut, it will take you to your ReadyDROP folder. Simply copy/paste files you wish to add to ReadyDROP inside that folder. When you add files to your ReadyDROP folder on any device, you will get a notification from ReadyDROP. In addition to local Remote clients you can also go to https://readydrop.netgear.com and access ReadyDROP from the web. 13

And that s it! You are now ready to sync all the files in the ReadyDROP folder across all your devices. A p p e n d i x B How to Setup and Use ReadyNAS Replicate The following will show you how to easily setup the ReadyNAS Replicate add-on and start managing backups between different ReadyNAS systems. Login to the ReadyNAS GUI and click on Configure. Next, go click on the Add-ons menu item. If it hasn t already been installed, it will show up in the Available tab. If it is there, simply click on the Get button for the Replicate Add-on. The Replicate add-on will now show up under the Installed tab. If Replicate was pre-installed it will show up on the Installed tab. 14

Click on the icon and you ll see the details for the add-on. Click on the Manage ReadyNAS Replicate button. The next step will be to activate the 45 day trial (or if you have a license, register the unit). Enter the required credentials, agree to the terms and conditions and click on the 45 day trial button. 15

If registration is successful you should see the following message: Once the trial license has been activated you ll be taken to the Account Information tab. Here is where you associate the device with a ReadyNAS Remote ID. If you already have an account, enter the credentials and click on Register to ReadyNAS Replicate. If you don t already have an account, go to https://www.replicate.readynas.com/login/index.html and click on Join Now to create an account. For testing purposes you can use the following account: Username: peter.chen@netgear.com Password: password Now go to https://www.replicate.readynas.com/login/index.html and login with your newly created Remote ID or with the test credentials above. You will see a summary page with all the ReadyNAS systems managed under this account. If you have successfully registered your ReadyNAS system with Replicate, it should also show up here. From this screen you can see details of any particular system as well as browse the files and directories on the unit. 16

The next step will be to create a backup job between two units. Click on the Backup Data link. You will see a wizard to assist with the job creation process. Give this new job a name and select the source and destination ReadyNAS systems for the backup job. Click Next. The next step will be to define a schedule for this backup job. Enter the frequency and start time. Click Next. 17

Finally, you will see the confirmation page. Define the snapshot size and select whether or not to enable compression. Click Apply. That s it! You ve now created a job that backs up data from one ReadyNAS to another. To manually kick off the job, click on Monitor. Click on the Play icon. 18
