Parking in Helsinki

T his guide informs you how to park in Helsinki, why parking is controlled, and where to get parking permits. By knowing and following the common rules traffic will be safe and parking easy. The number of cars and amount of traffic in Helsinki has doubled in two decades. Therefore, when visiting the city center it is worth considering whether to make the trip by metro or commuter train, for example. Commuter parking areas are available for parking your car. Easy parking in Helsinki!

Parking in Helsinki Parking in the city centre is allowed only on marked parking spaces. Parking is usually subject to a charge Monday through Friday between 9 a.m. and 7 p.m., and in certain places on Saturdays. Parking time is restricted. Parking spaces are divided into three payment zones. Parking is most expensive in the inner city. Private parking facilities are also available in the city centre. Commuter parking (park-and-ride) is a convenient way to avoid traffic jams in the city centre. The areas reserved for parking are situated near public transportation stops and stations. You can park your car and continue by metro, bus, tram or commuter train. Parking is usually free of charge. For up-to-date information on commuter parking please visit the Helsinki Metropolitan Area Council (YTV) website at www.ytv.fi > In English > Transport > Maps. In suburban areas parking is usually free of charge, but parking time may be restricted. Parking prohibited zones are used to restrict street-side parking especially in new residential areas. These regional parking bans may apply to the entire quarter or an individual street.

Parking permits Payment methods Parking fees can be paid by coins, in-car parking meters and mobile phones, and in some places also by credit card. l Ticket machines accept 20 and 50 cent coins; most machines also accept 1 and 2 euro coins. Parking meters accept 20 cent coins, as well as 1 and 2 euro coins. The machines do not give change. Some inner city ticket machines accept credit card payment. l Registered users can pay parking fees by mobile phone for all public parking spaces in Helsinki. l Users of in-car parking meters only pay for actual parking time used. Parking meters and rechargeable cards can be purchased from the Public Works Department. The cards can also be charged at certain service stations and kiosks. Parking payment methods are under constant development. For more information on mobile phone services, in-car parking meters and other payment methods please go to www.hel.fi/pysakointi/ english > Payment methods. Residential parking Car-owners living in the inner city area can obtain a residential parking permit, which entitles them to park free of charge on the residential parking spaces of their area. The spaces are indicated by traffic signs. Corporate parking Companies can obtain a corporate parking permit for their cars, entitling them to park free of charge on the residential parking spaces of the area. Parking for the disabled Parking permits for the disabled entitle their holders to park in spaces reserved for the disabled, and parking free of charge in paid parking spaces. The permit also allows parking for longer periods than indicated by traffic signs, and parking in zones where parking is banned by traffic signs and residential precincts if no inconvenience is caused to traffic. Permits are issued to disabled persons or for the transport of disabled persons. Veterans parking Front veterans who live in Helsinki can obtain a free parking permit. The veterans parking permit entitles its holder to park free of charge on parking spaces subject to a parking fee in the city of Helsinki. Residential, corporate and veterans parking permits are issued by the Public Works Department, and the parking permits for disabled persons by the police. For the latest information on parking permits please visit the parking control website at www.hel.fi/pysakointi/english.

Parking control Adherence to parking regulations in Helsinki is controlled by traffic wardens. Their work promotes the safety and smoothness of traffic. Controlling is used to prevent illegal parking. Traffic wardens provide information on proper parking. They provide information on obtaining a parking permit, the various payment methods, and on finding the nearest parking place. Illegal parking is subject to a parking ticket. If the ticket is not paid by its due date, the amount of fine is increased by 50 percent. The police also monitor parking. If parking causes serious danger or inconvenience, traffic wardens notify the police of illegal parking. The driver is always responsible for following parking regulations. Drivers contribute to the safety of traffic through their behaviour; smooth and safe traffic means a more enjoyable city. Illegal parking causes inconvenience to everyone.
