...Graphic Arts Printers in Florence since 1948, a leading company in graphic production and the art of printing. The Gruppo Barbieri trademark is an integral part of the history of the city where it was born and grew up: Florence. Its vocation came from the very nature of its surroundings: the constant contrast between traditional values, culture and techniques and the use of the most advanced technology, in pursuit of the highest quality. The artistic traditions of master craftsmen, their skill combined with knowledge and use of advanced technology: these are the values that ensure creativity, quality and image. Fortezza Fortitude LUCA DELLA ROBBIA (1440-1482)

Florence......and art Infinite wealth... Florence is a vast container of every form of beauty and art: the city as it is today is the result of a stratification of history and civilization meeting and merging splendidly into that particular character and esthetic taste that distinguish her inhabitants. From the first primitive settlements in the 10th century B.C. to the Romans, who founded a colony that soon became the capital of Tuscany and Umbria, until the triumph of Christianity, introduced in Florence by St. Miniato, the history of Florence was marked by many major events. Under the noble Marquis Hugo of Tuscany, around the year 1000, Florence began to grow and be embellished with superb monuments and, through the struggles of the Guelphs and Ghibellines, her merchants and artists succeeded in establishing democratic laws and economic prosperity. The main monuments, like the cathedral Santa Maria del Fiore, with its splendid dome by Brunelleschi, the private palaces of the noble Pitti, Strozzi, Pazzi, and Medici families, grew out of the rise of patronage the greatest patron of the arts was, of course, Lorenzo il Magnifico and the genius of skilled artisans and craftsmen. The medieval GUILDS, called ARTS in Florence, were corporations of craftsmen, merchants, and workers who had a fundamental place in the political, economic and artistic development of the city. Craftsmanship and Art The Renaissance represented the highest point of the conjunction of patronage, art and high craftsmanship. The workshops were schools of the highest artistic expression: Giotto apprenticed in Cimabue s shop, Masaccio worked for Masolino, Leonardo studied under Verrocchio, Donatello learned his art working as a boy on Gothic building sites at the end of the 14th century, then proceeding on the cultured circle of Ghiberti where he became a friend of Brunelleschi. Michelangelo was employed in Ghirlandaio s shop, and soon after came under the protection of the Magnificent. Brunelleschi was the first modern architect: he alone was responsible for the project of the dome that would be erected by highly professional laborers. In his workshop Cellini developed his skills and elaborated his works at the way of the highest goldsmith s art. Creativity, technical skill, constant application and craftsmanship, carried to the most sublime applications, all together work to achieve the greatest masterpieces of the Western Art.

Gruppo Barbieri......and its skill From its roots, a philosophy grew and bore fruit... Artistic sensitivity, love of beauty these are said to be the dominating characteristics of the Florentine spirit. Gruppo Barbieri was founded in 1948 in the heart of the arts and crafts district of Florence, Piazza Santo Spirito, directly opposite a church designed by Brunelleschi. After the disasters of World War II, this district experienced a real rebirth, and a great many craftsmen s shops reopened and the reputation of the zone grew. Luciano Barbieri, in the manner of a Renaissance craftsman, not only created a workshop capable of producing high quality and creativity, but he made it a meeting place for friends who, each in his own special way, applied artistic skill to the production of everyday objects. At the end of the day, they got together to compare notes and exchange working methods, and little by little this friendly craftsmanship grew into industry offering a unique production in terms of quality and concept. Every since the turn of the century the Barbieri family had worked actively to apply art to articles of daily use: Foresto Barbieri and his brothers were famous for the beauty and handsome elegance of their products in wrought iron, in great demand by an international customers. Not by chance, when the trade schools called Technical Industrial Institutes were created to train professionals for Italy s industrial future, where the craftsman s art would merge with industrial production, Foresto Barbieri was proclaimed a Master of Art in the Florentine institute. For today s collections and treasures Gruppo Barbieri, with its strong tradition in the service of art, holds the secrets of the culture and techniques of the master printers and embossers of Florentine art. In the second half of the Nineteenth century, in Florence was reconsidered the tradition of artistic printers and book-binders, in response to the demands of a cultured Italian and foreign customers, British in particular. The ornamental motifs in the manuscripts preserved in the Laurenziana and Riccardiana Libraries are being rediscovered, and new interest rase for the binding papers used in the Seventeenth and Eighteenth Centuries, from which the production and fame of Florentine paper also derived. With a wealth of iconography and perfect mastery of the techniques of hot metal foil printing, engraving and embossing, Gruppo Barbieri is heir to a great cultural and artistic tradition, while at the same time welcoming the challenge of new technologies and market demands: they were, in fact, the first printers in Florence to have placed their experience and skill at the service of what time a go was called advertising and now is called communication. Art applied to daily life, continues to be the philosophy of the Company, where a wide range of products of unquestionable quality is produced, real treasures with which to surround ourselves every day.

The mixture of techniques produces a range of highly unmistakable products. The hot metal foil stamping, with the variety of colors it can achieve, with the shine of gold, provides a superb rendering of the beauty of artistic themes. Engraving, that is the result of clever etchings made by ancient and highly skilled hands, takes us back to the ancient Florentine tradition of engravers and goldsmiths, transferring from these noble arts all the precious beauty of our products. The letterpress and lithography in our workshop, mean high level knowledge of the old traditional art printing.
