I pplication to ritish Universities (I students) (May 2014)

US pplication single application form providing spaces for up to courses (at different universities or some at the same university) is completed and sent to US, which then distributes the application information to the universities. Note that you are limited to a maximum of 4 courses in of the areas: medicine, dentistry and veterinary science. US only reveals to a university the information relevant to that university - each university does not know which other universities you have applied to. The form has information completed by you, the applicant, and information from the school, your predicted grades and West Island School reference. For 2014 entry, the cost of application is 23 (for 2- choices) or 12 for a single choice. Student may also apply for foundation programmes outside of US. US pply We use the online pply method for all US applications - you will create an online application which you can amend and edit repeatedly until it is complete. You first need to register yourself as a West Island School student by opening the web page. login UZZWORD will be given to you by WIS areers Team when it is time for you to do this. We strongly advise students to follow school deadlines to ensure applications reach universities early for a good chance of receiving early offers. Refer to the University s Entry Requirements Every course at every university in the UK has its own entry requirements. On the appropriate Faculty website, you should find a detailed description of what is required to gain admission to that course at that university as well as details of what they are looking for in your personal statement and in the interview if it is required. 1

Personal Statement - full guidance will be given on how to write this This is the section provided to allow you to market yourself to the university. - You should aim to explain clearly why you have applied for the courses you chose. - State any relevant work experience or career aspirations that relate to your course. - Positions of responsibility and leadership - outline your achievements both in and outside West Island School. - School activities - have you been a member of any WIS teams? Do you play a musical instrument? Have you been involved in drama productions? Have you visited theatre or outside lectures? - Out of school activities - what do you do? ommunity service in your free time is particularly important. - Work experience - detail could be included here if it is relevant. For some careers, work experience is virtually essential e.g. medicine and veterinary Science. Studying Law and the LNT pplicants who wish to study Law at several UK universities are required to sit the LNT - the National dmissions Test for Law. heck website http://www.lnat.ac.uk for more details. Studying Medicine or Veterinary Science: UKT and the MT More than 20 universities now require you to take the UKT linical ptitude Test (http://www.ukcat.ac.uk). If a university does not require the UKT, it will ask for the MT. The MT (http://bmat.org.uk) only has one test date, sometime in November. There is a deadline for test registration, usually in September. If you are applying for Oxbridge you must enter the registration details on your application form. Please note the external deadline is 1 th October. 2

Oxbridge lthough part of the US network, Oxford and ambridge also have their own application system and deadlines. You may apply to Oxford or ambridge but not to both. There are around 30 colleges in each university and students apply to a particular college although the courses are centrally administered for the whole university. Within their college, students are assigned to small tutorial groups of around 1 to 3 students for each tutor this tutorial system is a key feature that distinguishes Oxbridge form other UK universities. Most applicants to Oxford will need to sit a test related to the course they applied for. The tests are scheduled in early December. pplicants to Oxbridge for medicine and veterinary science need to sit the MT sometime around November. Your MT registration details must be included on your Oxbridge application form. While many students may wish to apply to Oxbridge, it must be recognized as an intensely competitive process. The minimum predicted grades that WIS will support are a total of 40 out of 4 and,, at Higher Level. t the University of Oxford for example, there were more than 1,200 applicants for around 3,00 places for 2012 entry. t orpus hristi ollege Oxford, for example, only 18 applicants out of the 8 who applied to this college were successful for 2012 entry. Please note the external deadline is 1 th October. Interviews Interviews are scheduled around December or January. Different colleges have different practices for selecting students for interview e.g. Downing ollege, ambridge invites all students for interview at ambridge if they are available to interview in the UK. If students state they are not available to interview in the UK, then only short- listed students are invited to interview in Hong Kong (face-to-face or via Skype) and only a fraction of them would be expected to be offered a place. 3

Home Status Please note that while WIS areers staff can provide very general guidelines on what has helped people in the past, we cannot guarantee the response of any university. Not only each university but sometimes each course may differ in the conditions of offers. It is imperative that you contact the university directly to ask them to advise on your individual situation. We strongly recommend you start the process as soon as possible. In the present economic climate within the UK, obtaining home status is very difficult. Useful website: UKIS for the most up to date information: http://www.ukcisa.org.uk/. Visas Students who require a visa to study in the UK must first obtain a S (onfirmation of cceptance to Students) letters from their chosen university after publication of their I or TE results. Please refer to the ritish ouncil Hong Kong website for information. http://www.educationuk.org/hongkong/sub/visas/ English Requirements Students who wish to apply to the UK and need a student visa may be required by the UK to sit an approved English language proficiency test such as the IELTS and achieve a level requested by the universities they apply to. West Island School does not provide tuition or curriculum support for these tests and WIS is not an approved centre for sitting them. http://www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/visas-immigration/studying/adultstudents/ 4

Making smart choices We wish to encourage appropriate and well-matched applications in partnership with parents and students, which will facilitate successful outcomes. onsequently we urge both parents and students to bear in mind the intense competition currently experienced by applicants to ritish universities. The most competitive universities such as Oxford, ambridge, UL, LSE, Imperial, Kings ollege, ristol, Durham, SOS, Warwick, York and all medical schools will accept nothing less than grade in all subjects at I/GSE. They will also be expecting an extremely high total on I points score with top levels in individual Higher Level subjects along with high scores in special entry tests for courses - LNT for law, MT or UKT for medicine. The personal statement must be exceptional and reflect the experiences of an independent, mature student who shows initiative, leadership and commitment to extra-curricular activities as well as S. It is also an expectation that students attend additional public lectures such as those at the local universities or Royal Geographical Society to further enhance their knowledge of their chosen subject or field.
