1 HIGH SCHOOL PROFILE School Name: Address: International School of Geneva, Campus des Nations 11, route des Morillons, 1218 Grand-Saconnex, Switzerland Tel: Fax: Website: CEEB Code: Senior Administrators Director General: Mrs Vicky Tuck Principal Secondary Section: Mrs Lesley Meyer Counsellors Mark Grant, UK, Europe Ellyn Levin, US and Canada Campus des Nations is one of the three campuses of The International School of Geneva, an independent non-profit foundation with a Governing Board, which includes representatives from the Federal, Cantonal, and City authorities. According to its mission, the School educates children of Swiss and international families in the greater Geneva area, providing instruction in both French and English. Founded in 1924 shortly after the establishment of the League of Nations in Geneva, its mission is to prepare an international student body of over 130 nationalities and 90 mother tongues to enter universities in many countries around the world. The International School of Geneva was the main agent in creating the International Baccalaureate programme. The school is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools and the Council of International Schools. Students are admitted on a non-selective, first-come, first-served basis. 95% of graduates go on to higher education. CAMPUS DES NATIONS Enrollment (Years 9-13): Approximately 360 students with 15 first nationalities. Academic organisation: Students are prepared for university entrance by means of the International Baccalaureate (IB). The majority of our graduating students take the full IB diploma examinations; others may sit individual IB exams in order to earn one or more subject certificates or graduate after completion of year 12 with a High School Diploma. High School diploma: Total 24 credits: Mother Tongue Language 4, 2 nd Language 3, Math 3, Lab Sciences 3, Humanities 3,Art/Music/Theatre/ Physical Education 1.5
2 GRADING Class rank: The School has a transient student population. Some students remain for only one or two years, which does not allow for the compilation of a meaningful class rank based on GPA. Therefore we do not rank. Grading system: Students are graded on a scale of 7, and all grades are unweighted. GPA calculations are based solely on grades earned at our school and do not include non-academic courses such as Physical Education and non-ib Art. The minimum passing grade is 3. Physical Education and the Year 11 Personal project are graded on a Pass/Fail basis. In the MYP (Grades 9 11) half grades are not used and rounding is down, not up. Year 11 arts courses earn 1.5 credits for the 2 courses. INTERNATIONAL BACCALAUREATE DIPLOMA CURRICULUM The International Baccalaureate Diploma program: forms the basis of all courses in years 12 and 13 for the majority of students. English: English Literature, English Language and Literature Mathematics: Mathematics Higher, Standard and Studies Science: Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Design Technology French: French Language and Literature, French ab initio Spanish: Spanish B Other languages: Self-taught mother tongues Social studies courses offered: Economics, Psychology, History in English, History in French, Geography, Art, Music and Drama: Film, Visual Arts High School Diploma: 24 credits (effective for students entering the Foundation as of fall 2012): Mother tongue language 4, 2 nd language 3, Math 3, Sciences 3, Humanities 3, Art/Music/Theatre/Design Technology 1.5, Physical Education 1.5. ACADEMICS Subjects offered: English A, English B, French A, French B, Spanish A, Spanish B, Sciences (Chemistery, Physics, Biology), Humanities (History and Geography integrated for two years, then History, Geography and Economics taught separately in Grade 11) in English and French, Arts (Visual Arts, Music, and Drama) and Technology (Design Technology and Information Technology). Community Service and the Year 11 Personal Project are also required. The MYP Personal project is a significant body of work, produced over an extended period of time and the product of the student s own initiative. The Middle Years Programme (MYP) is a curriculum framework designed by the International Baccalaureate for students aged 11 to 16. Five Areas of Interaction provide the learning context for students in the MYP: Environments, Human Ingenuity, Health and Social Education, Community and Service, Approaches to Learning. Environment, Human Ingenuity, and Health and Social Education are broad areas of inquiry where personal, societal and global issues are explored. With Community and Service students become aware of their roles and responsibilities as members of communities. In Approaches to Learning students learn about and take increasing responsibility for their own learning. These are assessed regularly via the school reports. Approaches to learning include: organizational skills and attitudes towards work, collaborative skills, communication, information literacy, reflection, problem-solving and thinking skills, subject-specific and interdisciplinary conceptual understanding. When appropriate these five areas of interaction are interwoven throughout the subject groups taught in the MYP. Student understanding of the areas of interaction is crucial to overall student success in the MYP. Understanding of the areas of interaction is demonstrated in the completion of a Personal Project in Year 11 successful completion of which is required for the MYP certificate.
