Educational aims of the programme The programme aims to Encourage students to engage with some of the fundamental questions concerning the aims, values, policies and practices of education and its relationship to society. evelop in students the ability to construct and sustain a reasoned argument about some educational issues in a clear lucid and coherent manner by engaging critically with evidence. Provide learning and teaching in a climate supported by research. Equip students with knowledge and understanding of the French/German/Italian/Spanish language as well as a number of generic and subject-specific skills which will prepare them for further study and/or employment where German / French / Italian or Spanish is used in the UK or elsewhere; equip students with knowledge and understanding of the main aspects of the culture and politics of societies in which the principal language is German / French / Spanish or Italian. Increase all participants competence as learners and aid their understanding of their own learning styles, moving them from dependence to independence and aiding them in developing transferable skills. Encourage students to draw on a range of intellectual resources, academic disciplines and theoretical perspectives to illuminate their understanding of education in a wide range of contexts. Provide a flexible and changing curriculum that engages with current issues and debates in education.

2 11. Programme outcomes on completion of the programme the successful majoring student will have achieved the following:. Knowledge and understanding of: 1. urrent and historical ideologies, philosophies and political ideas and their influence on education, educators and society. 2. The processes of learning and some of their impact on individuals and educational practices, including some of the problems encountered by learners. 3.urrent research and research methods used in the field of education including the main theories and research evidence governing the cognitive, social and emotional development of learners. 4. Teaching/learning methods. wide variety of teaching and learning methods are used from lectures to seminars, which require preparatory reading by students, poster sessions and presentations with both individual and group learning being employed. ssessment Modes of assessment that measure knowledge and understanding include seen and unseen examinations, essays, reports, learning logs, reflective journals/evaluation, group and individual presentations, dissertations, oral and written examination and assessment by peers. In all language classes homework is marked and feedback is given which reinforces knowledge and understanding of the language.. ognitive (thinking) skills ble to: 1. Teaching/learning methods Practical skills are taught, learnt and experienced through participatory seminars and workshops, group discussion, assignments and given tasks. Investigative field work and placement projects where undertaken. ssessment Takes the form of assessment by written and practical tasks, such as essays, presentations, group assignments possible placement or year abroad projects/assignments and individual research. 6. Organise own learning and demonstrate increasing levels of autonomy 4. ommunicate effectively (writing, verbally, graphically) Teaching/learning methods Students learn and rehearse key skills at level 1, thereafter skills are nurtured and developed throughout the programme culminating in the proposition and optional placement module. ssessment Students key skills are assessed at level 1 through multi-activity workshops, paired and group work and presentations, action planning and these are embedded in the Level 1 modules. Subsequently these skills are further developed from this foundation through the modules. 5. Work as a team member, collaborate, plan and fulfil agreed responsibilities 6. Programme structures and requirements, levels, modules, credits and awards Overall structure of the programme The programme is studied over three or four years full time with a completion of four modules per academic year or studied on a part time basis with the completion of up to three modules per academic year. There are twenty two weeks of teaching plus two student study week and three weeks of assessment by examination, and submission of coursework assignments. Each module consists of a total of 300 hours study time which is sub divided into contact (with lecturer) and non-contact (personally directed learning) time. Each module is designated as level 1,2 or 3, in most but not all cases equating to the year of study, representing progression in the demand and nature of the expected learning outcomes for the modules, year on year. Students follow Education Studies and a Modern Language as a combined programme. They take Education Studies and a foreign modern language: French/German/Italian or Spanish. In Year One modules are prescribed. In Year Two students have the option to take EU2301 Working and Researching in Organisations 1 which prepares them for a placement and undertaking a small scale research project. In Year Three students then have the option to either complete a year long research project or a half year long research project and half year placement. For their Modern Language studies, in year 1 students take two modules: a practical language module 1, 2 or 3 (depending on their entry level) and an rea Studies background module (1055). In year 2, students continue with the appropriate level of language 2, 3 or 4 and a language content module 1. In year 3 (or 4 if a year abroad is taken in year 3) two language modules are taken: one from either language 3, 4 or 5 (advanced FRE/SP) or translation and one from either. Students may change to other appropriate programmes with the agreement of the Programme Leader. 4

See the Undergraduate prospectus for general entry requirements for degree. Offers normally will be made on 200 Tariff points. International students for whom English is not a first language should normally have one of the following: We welcome applications from people over the age of 21, with or without formal qualifications. Students whose first language is not English must have an IELTS score of at least 6.0. Students whose score is less than 5.5 of any component of the test are very strongly recommended to attend the Middlesex University s pre-sessional preparation programme for international students (details are available from the dmissions Office). 15. Information about assessment regulations The assessment and progression rules are those that apply under the university regulations. utomatic deferral is not permitted on any of the modules; students wishing to defer must consult an assessment administrator. 16. Learning Resources provide extra support for students who require help with areas such as essay writing and numeracy. In addition to this EU and Modern Languages staff are available for booked tutorials and are able to be accessed by at any time. Specialist language software and other material is provided on the web to aid learning in modules. Tutors research activities are used in modules to enhance and support student learning. Students with disabilities will receive support from central university services and their learning will be supported by the provision where possible of materials in a suitable format 6

Placement opportunities Students undertaking this programme are offered the opportunity to complete a placement as part of their course (EU3392). Students are required to find a placement opportunity, which must be within an educational or training organisation. Support is provided by regular tutorials and underpinned by the prerequisite module EU 2301 which prepares students for the experience. In addition to the above students may choose other forms of work experiences in schools, as available. ERSMUS/SORTES student exchange, or ritish ouncil English language assistantship or omenius language assistantship schemes. 20. Future careers: how the programme supports graduates future career development (if applicable) Students receive specialist input on career progression at Level One and Two. dvice on progressing to PGE or the Graduate Teacher Programme can be obtained from tutors or other staff in the school. Students develop graduate skills throughout the programme and the placement and dissertation modules give students the opportunity of working in an environment they may consider as a career possibility. This award also gives the additional possibility of an International areer. 21. Other information The programme is available for part-time and full time study. 7
