Biogas and Biomethane - Local energy replaces imported energy Regional and national development of biogas and biomethane production in Sweden Tartu 28/11-12 Mårten Ahlm Biogas Syd

- Biogas Syd is a regional cooperation organisation for biogas actors in South Sweden - Biogas Syd s objective is to make sure that biogas gets the best regional conditions possible to grow. Both when it comes to production, distribution and use of biogas.

Participants in Biogas Syd network Main financier Financiers Participants Other financing

Different situation in European countries

Picture: http://www.seafish.org Swedish transport sector is to about 95 % dependent on imported fossil fuels. Import means export of capital, mostly to countries outside EU

New Gas Field Parts of the imported oil can be replaced by locally produced biogas = new job opportunities and tax revenue. Capital stays in the region/country

Recirculation of minerals: Nitrogen and Phosfor

Biogas from manure lowest CO2 impact of all available fuels! 400 g CO2-ekvivalenter per KWh drivmedel 300 200 100 0-100 -200-300 Bensin Petrol Diesel Fossilt - 60% - 70% Bio RMErapvete - grain oil Ethanol Etanol- - rapeseed Biodrivmedel - 180% Biogas- -gödsel manure The graph is based on life cycle analazys for different fuels. Different applications for Biogas Heat Transport fuel Power Injecting biomethane into natural gas grid Biomethane = needs upgrading

Swedish biogas production Biogas plants number Waste water Landfill Farm Industry Co digestion

Biogas production Sweden Biogas production percent Waste water Co digestion Farm Industry Landfill

Biogas production Sweden End use of produced biogas percent Heat Vehicle fuel Electricity Flaring Unknowned

Largest producer is Skåne

Biogas production in Skåne ~300 GWh

Biogas upgrading in Skåne 9 upgrading plants in operation First plant built in 1997/98 Biomethane injected to gas grid at 5 injection points in Skåne

Development of CNG/CBG in Sweden Natural gas /CNG Biogas /CBG In total

In Sweden sometimes biogas = biomethane and biomethane in a car = vehicle gas Vehicle gas is the name used for biomethane and/or natural gas when used as fuel for vehicles Biogas was about 60 % of the total sold volume of vehicle gas in Sweden in 2011

Future biogas production? Biogas potential from waste and residual products ~ 10 % ~ 50 % in total with limitations

Recirculation of minerals: Nitrogen and Phosfor

Biogas potential in Skåne (rest products) Waste water slutge = 124 GWh

Biogas potential in Skåne (rest products) Sludge = 124 GWh Food waste = 182 GWh

Biogas potential in Skåne (rest products) Sludge = 124 GWh Food waste = 182 GWh Industry = 364 GWh

Biogas potential in Skåne (rest products) Sludge = 124 GWh Food waste= 182 GWh Industry = 364 GWh Manure = 450 GWh

Biogas potential in Skåne (rest products) Sludge = 124 GWh Food waste = 182 GWh Industry = 364 GWh Manure = 450 GWh Straw = 933 GWh

Biogas potential in Skåne (rest products) Sluge = 124 GWh Food waste = 182 GWh Industry = 364 GWh Manure = 450 GWh Straw = 933 GWh Crop residuals = 874 GWh

Biogas potential in Skåne (rest products) In total 2927 GWh -equals to 290.000 m 3 oil -about 300.000 personal cars yearly fuel consumption

3 TWh biogas in Skåne would result in 3.300 jobs in Skåne Increased regional wealth (GRP) with 700 million Euros per year Reduced CO2-emissions of a value of 100 million Euros Other values such as reduced dependency of imported oil.

Some projects about to happend Jordberga Dalby Sjöbo/Färs Nymölla Malmö*2 Helsingborg & Kristianstad

Jordberga, Swedens biggest biogas plant 110 GWh Injecting gas to grid Permit granted 4 strong owners SBI (55%), E.ON Gas (20%), SB3 (20%), Nordic Sugar (5%)

Dalby, Lunds Energi 60 GWh Mainly manure and corn silage Flexible plant (substrates) Delivering to the gas grid In permit phase, stage 2 Start building in 2014/2015 I operation2015

Sjöbo, Biogas Färs ca 60 GWh biogas Mainly manure from pig and cattle farms Co-operative organisation Private corporation in 2012

Nymölla Stora Enso 100 GWh of biogas Waste water sludge from paper pulp industry Internal energy use Environmental permit in 2011

Malmö, SYSAV ca 35 GWh biogas Food waste, food industry and manure Will be built in 2014

Bio2G, Biogas (SNG) from the woods Thermal gasification, 1600 GWh/year Solid biomass Planned to be in operation 2015/16

Helsingborg and Kristianstad - increasing production capacity in existing plants

Conclusions/reflexions, biomethane and gas driven vehicles Renewable and domestic energy/fuel Large potential based on only rest products Available technology (production and vehicles) Dependent on infrastructure Incentives for end costumers is needed Short and long term incentives for biogas producers required

Risks General unstable political situation Different types of incentives/support needs to continue to be able to realise the full potential
