We generally receive around 2500 applications for the 5 year A100 medicine course and 350 applications for the six year A108 medicine with a foundation year. We interview approximately 700 applicants for the A100 course and 50 for the A108 course. Information on how we assess A108 medicine with a foundation year programme can be found on pages 4 and 5 of this document. Our Initial Assessment of your Application A100 5 year medicine course Academic ability and the UKCAT scores you achieved and are predicted to achieve are assessed at this stage. The UKCAT test must be taken in the same year as the application is made to UCAS. Applicants who have completed GCSE s or IGCSE s and are studying, or have completed, A-levels will be assessed as follows: The GCSE/IGCSEs scored are limited to the highest 8 subjects (first sit results only we do not consider re-sit results). A-levels: the requirement is AAA including biology and chemistry, excluding general studies and critical thinking. The third subject can be any other subject. A fourth A-level will not benefit your application. A-levels are NOT scored. Please note: Qualifications must be studied over a two year period. UKCAT There are five components to the UKCAT test which will be scored. The four cognitive components (verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, abstract reasoning, decision analysis) are each scored as follows: 801 900 = 9 points 701 800 = 8 points 601 700 = 7 points 501 600 = 6 points 401 500 = 5 points 301 400 = 4 points The weighting for each of the four components is equal. The fifth component, SJT is scored as follows: Band 1 = 3 points Band 2 = 2 points Band 3 = 1 point Band 4 = 0 point Applicants who achieve a band 4 are not considered further. UKCATSEN Applicants who are entitled to additional time for public examinations are entitled to take the UKCATSEN. The UKCAT website www.ukcat.ac.uk provides information relating to the range of medical conditions acceptable. Please Note: The School of Medicine requires applicants who sit the UKCATSEN to provide supporting evidence. Outcome of the Initial Assessment The aforementioned scores are totalled and the top 50% of applicants will be considered further and have their personal statement and reference read and scored. The lower 50% of applicants will not be considered further. Personal Quality Assessment A maximum score of 16 can be achieved for the personal statement and reference. The following attributes are considered: An understanding of the challenges of a medical career Motivation Commitment Voluntary experience Extracurricular activities School/College contribution Supporting evidence in reference Final Selection for Interview The score given for personal statement and reference is added to the previous scores for academic ability and UKCAT. Applicants with the highest overall score at this stage are invited for interview. Interviews The style of interviews will be Multiple Mini-Interview (MMI) and will comprise between 4 8 stations. Information on the assessment of each station will be given to applicants who are invited for interview. Interview Schedule The dates of the interviews will appear on the website once they have been scheduled. Page 3 of 5

Outcome of Interviews Applicants will be scored based on performance in each station. The scores will be totalled and applicants ranked. Approximately 400 offers for A100 5 year medicine course and approximately 35 offers for A108 6 year medicine with a foundation course will be made.
