1a. Wings veins visible and black on dorsal, not overlain with blue. Large (~1.5 inches). Female brown with black spots, traces of blue scales may be present. Ventral hindwing usually unmarked. Blue Copper (Lycaena heteronea) 1b. Blue not as above go to 2. 2a. Ventral hindwing with white-ringed black spots (not fused together by white [see 9b]) and white crescent (may be centered in black) in center of hindwing..go to 3. 2b. Butterfly without white-ringed black spots, or without white crescent in center of hindwing..go to 4. 3a. Dorsal of male blue; ventral of female brown, with at least some blue near body. At least some crescents or spots present on hindwing margin. Black bar in dorsal forewing cell may be present. Some orange may be present in hindwing margin. Boisduval s Blue (Plebejus icarioides), no orange ventral with orange

3b. Dorsal brown to gray, both genders. No trace of blue on wings. Dingy gray-brown below. Found in Cascades. Halfmoon Hairstreak (Satyrium semiluna) dorsal ventral 4a. 10b. No dark patch in center of ventral hindwing. Submarginal band of thin black crescents. Males lavender/periwinkle blue, females blue with black border. Echo Azure (Celastrina echo) 11a. Small, single tail present on hindwing.go to 12. 11b. No tail present on hindwing..go to 14. 12a. Dorsal brown, no trace of blue in either gender. Hindwing not round, more angular. Sylvan Hairstreak (Satyrium sylvinus) Lightly marked Columbia Basin segregate. 12b. Dorsal blue in males, female dorsal with at least some blue. Hindwing round in shape.go to 13.

13a. Ventral chalky-white, lightly marked. Usually only 1-2 orange spots above 1 scintillae. Western Tailed Blue (Cupido amyntula) 13b. Ventral light gray. More heavily marked than Western Tailed Blue (13a) and usually more orange (3-5 spots) than Western Tailed Blue. Eastern Tailed Blue (Cupido comyntas) 14a. Orange restricted to ventral hindwing..go to 15. 14b. Orange found on both ventral hindwing and ventral forewing.go to 21. 15a. Scintillae (shiny blue spots) present behind orange spots go to 16. 15b. No scintillae present behind orange spots.go to 18.

16a. No orange present on male dorsal hindwing. Found in cool boreal habitats in the Cascades and Olympics. Hindwing can be very chalky white. Anna s Blue (Plebejus anna) 16b. Orange band on male dorsal forewing.go to 17. 17a. Small amount of black scales between orange spots and blue ground color on dorsal hindwing. Spots redorange. Thicker black border on dorsal than 17b. Found through most of WA east of the Cascades. Lupine Blue (Plebejus lupini) 17b. Pinkish orange spots meet blue directly on dorsal forewing. Thin black border on dorsal. Found in southern parts of WA in disturbed areas/ wasteland. Acmon Blue (Plebejus acmon)

18a. Orange spots crescent shaped, barely touching if at all go to 19. 18b. Orange spots block shaped, often forming an orange band.go to 20. 19a. Associated with Eriogonum compositum and E. elatum. The more widespread of the two blues compared here. Columbia Blue (Euphilotes columbiae) 19b. Associated with Eriogonum nudum. Found in southern WA, east of Cascade crest. Dotted Blue (Euphilotes enoptes)

20a. Associated with Eriogonum heracleoides, likely also E. douglasii. Cascadia Blue (Euphilotes on heracleoides ) (note: not yet fully described) 20b. Associated with Eriogonum umbellatum. Glaucon Blue (Euphilotes glaucon) 20c. Associated with E. sphaerocephalum and E. thymoide. The species identity of these butterflies remains to be determined.

21a. Orange spots large and bright ( screaming orange ), more so than 22a/22b. Found in drier areas, eastern WA. Melissa Blue (Plebejus melissa) 21b. Ventral hindwing not screaming orange, found in cool boreal habitats..go to 22. 22a. Found in Cascades, orange not very bright, may be restricted to only ventral hindwing. Anna s Blue (Plebejus anna) 22b. Found in NE WA. More orange than Anna s Blue(22a), but not as much as Melissa Blue (21a). Northern Blue (Plebejus idas)
