Introduction Welcome to the WARP! Computer Training Basic Computer Skills (MS Windows XP) workbook. Congratulations on taking the big step of deciding to learn how to use your Windows XP computer. If you have never used a computer before, this workbook will help you to gain the skills you need. If you have some experience with computers but feel a bit rusty, you will find that Windows XP has some very powerful features and is very user-friendly. Fear is a very common emotion when working with any new concept. Computers generate untold anxiety in some people. Don t let computers scare you! They are tools you use to help you work. They will do nothing you do not tell them to do. If you do something wrong it generally will not harm the computer, and you can almost always reverse the mistakes you make. For evaluation purposes only Windows XP is your computer s Operating System and has what is known as a Graphical User Interface. An operating system is a piece of software which controls the hardware of your computer. A graphical user interface (GUI) is a user-friendly way for you to control the operating system. These terms will mean more to you as you progress through the course. You will find that mastering Windows XP is a very rewarding experience. There is much to learn, and you will get frustrated with a few of the more advanced features, but by the end of this course you will have all the skills you need to operate your computer effectively. Ask your tutor about other courses when you feel you have mastered the fundamentals in this workbook. Basic MS Windows XP 2003 WARP! Computer Training 3

Depressing the left button and moving (dragging) the mouse to the desired destination, then releasing the mouse button (dropping). Selecting an object by clicking on it. Within applications, such as WordPad, highlighting can also mean to click the leftmouse button at the beginning of a word or paragraph and dragging the mouse to the end of the selected block of text, then releasing the button. You will know that a block of text has been selected when its background changes from white to a darker color. You will gain experience with using the mouse by completing the exercises in the following chapters. If you are having difficulties, be patient and keep trying. Mouse skills can be difficult to learn, but once you have mastered them everything else about using your computer will come naturally. 4 http://www.warpct.com WARP! Computer Training
