A History of the San Francisco Yacht Club The San Francisco Yacht Club was founded in 1869 and incorporated as a nonprofit organization in 1873. The club has operated continuously since then. It is the oldest yacht club on the West Coast of North America. The original anchorage and clubhouse were located in San Francisco near Mission Rock. Inadequate depth of water and increasing industrial development in the area resulted in a move to Sausalito. Property in Belvedere Cove was purchased and the club moved to Belvedere in 1927, renting the old Pacific Motor Boat Club property until the cove could be dredged and a clubhouse constructed. A small clubhouse was eventually completed in 1934 in time for Opening Day. It is still a part of the present building, which has been remodeled and enlarged many times. The most recent refurbishing of the clubhouse was completed in 1981. Since its formation, The San Francisco Yacht Club has been a distinguished leader in competitive and recreational sailing on the San Francisco Bay and has campaigned in many national and international events. The Club, with its tranquil setting in Belvedere and its superb harbor, is widely recognized as one of the premier facilities on the West Coast. The San Francisco Yacht Club has a long association with the Nordic Folkboat. In 1969, as a part of its Centennial Celebration, the Club hosted an International Regatta, which included the Folkboat Class. That regatta was first truly international event for the class in North America. A History of the Regatta 2007 marks the 30th Anniversary of the International Regatta for Nordic Folkboats on the San Francisco Bay. The Regatta was originally conceived in 1975 by a group of German and American sailors enjoying cocktails after a Gold Cup Regatta in Travemunde, Germany. This year s competition marks the fourteenth time that the regatta has been held. The first international events were dominated by Scandinavian entrants, but in recent years, local competitors have more than held their own. Since the first boats were imported over 50 years ago, the Nordic Folkboat has been a significant and colorful part of the racing scene on the San Francisco Bay. The Folkboat Class is enjoying a surge of renewed interest. Many of the vintage classics are being restored, and new boats have joined the fleet. The starting line at Folkboat regattas has become wonderfully chaotic as participation has more than doubled in the past five years. The San Francisco Bay Folkboat fleet remains one of the most competitive one-design classes on the rough waters inside the Golden Gate. One More Time Sailboat racing is a sport that is nearly free from the restrictions of age. It can be enjoyed by young and old and the love is often transferred from one generation to the next. As we celebrate the 30th Anniversary of this Regatta it is interesting to note that many of the competitors are the sons and daughters of sailors whose names appeared in programs many years ago. Take a close look at our list of regatta participants and you will see these names Andreasen, Kaiser, Madison, Reed, Waldear, and Wilson. Gordon Waldear was a driving force in the formation of our International Regatta for Nordic Folkboats. Mr. Waldear bought his first Folkboat in the mid-1960s, and what a boat it was! In Denmark it had carried sail number DEN-1. Here in America it was USA-1, and was the first of the species! Gordon was an avid sailor, who campaigned the boat successfully on the Bay. When the first International Regatta for Nordic Folkboats was held on the San Francisco Bay 30 years ago, Gordon s son Mickey was already a seasoned Folkboat sailor. In that first regatta Mickey crewed for the fiercely competitive Otto Schreier on board USA-92. In those early years the regatta was completely dominated by sailors from Denmark and Sweden. Waldear remembers those sailors from northern Europe, They were extremely aggressive on the starting line and most of them seemed to have been born with a tiller in their hand. They had been sailing their whole lives. Schreier and Waldear were the top U.S. finishers in tenth place. Sailing against international teams in those first years was a demanding lesson for local sailors. In the 1985 International Regatta for Nordic Folkboats, Mickey was at the helm of his own boat, USA-95. This superb wooden Folkboat had been constructed by the Børresen Boatworks in Vejle Denmark in 1965. Ten years before it had been selected as the model for the first GRP Folkboat constructed in the United States by Svend Svendsen. In spite of the intense competition in this regatta Waldear prevailed, and for the first time an American skipper was victorious. Waldear recalls that he nearly missed the last race of the regatta when his crew got to the dock late! In the years ahead Mickey Waldear would add two more regatta victories to that first win and remains the only skipper to have won three International Nordic Folkboat Regattas on the Bay. After 15 year hiatus Mickey Waldear came back to the Folkboat fleet this year, joining Bill Madison as crew for Brock De Lappe on the brand new USA-121, Faith. Rumor has it that on the last day of this regatta, Waldear will take the helm of 121, so the transom that you see in the distance, might very well belong to a three-time champion out there on the Bay one more time! Three-time International Regatta Champ Mickey Waldear. 5
