She did not have an engine, but was fitted with an outboard bracket to be powered off the stern with a 22hp motor to make the trip. Home port in Rochester NY. While in the Odenbeck s care, Amorita sailed out of the Rochester Yacht Club, was at one time, the flagship, and maintained a race record second to none in the area One of four NY30's that class records and "Lloyds" had lost track of Sailed out of Toronto by Mr. Herb Wahl, still maintaining the original cabin and rig layout. Then taken care of by the Sea Scouts in Rochester New York as the owner had gone off to war. Phil Rizzo, [email protected] was one of the sea scouts and had contacted Amorita s owners in 5/ Purchased by Mr. C. Mills, and sailed in Lake Ontario and with a home port in Rochester NY. - Still maintaining her original cabin and rig layout Owned by Mr. John Ruffner who had fiberglassed her from the waterline down, installed a powerful Red Wing engine, taken to Lake Erie with new owner in '54. 2 Purchased by Mr. Jay White and was sailed on Lake Erie with original gaff rig and cabin intact. Fall 1955 She was dismasted, over the bow, with only the jib flying in a 30+ gale while returning from a race at Toledo Yacht Club to home port in Vermilion Ohio Re-rigged as a marconi and had keelson replaced by Jay White and Bob Kromer Winner: "First to finish", winner of the Falcon Cup, in the Mentor Harbor Yacht club annual race from Cleveland Ohio. (168 boats) Received new taller doghouse / cabin. Placed well in the 1960 Port Huron - Mackinaw Island race, (unconfirmed) 1 st in class Purchased by Dr. Ken Thomas of Lakewood Ohio and sailed with new cabin and rig in Mentor / Cleveland Ohio. During the 60's she had fallen into disrepair Abandoned by the Thomas family in the back of the Mentor Harbor Yacht club. For many years in the 70 s, she was hauled at Mentor Harbor YC in Mentor Ohio, close to Grand River. The vessel was very deteriorated at this point. The yard considered salvaging the lead and using the hull for a Fourth of July bonfire on the beach. Tartan Marine used scrap lead for their keels and was contemplating using it for new Tartan keels. However, their keel foundry did not have a truck capable of hauling the keel in one piece, nor a crane to load the keel into a melting pot. Cutting the keel with a chain saw would have been a time consuming job and made the lead salvage not viable. The idea was scrapped Was scheduled to be broken up for the lead to pay for the storage. Mr. Gordon Group of the Great Lakes Marine Service was hired to conduct a value survey of the derelict vessel before she was to be scuttled. Mr. Gordon Group, recognizing the significance of the vessel, reluctantly became personally involved and was instrumental in blocking her destruction. 12/20, 1975 Amorita was scheduled for destruction. Power saws, dumpsters, and additional labor had been arranged to perform the task at hand. At approximately 9 AM, 30 minutes before the labor was to arrive, a willing financier called with the means to perform a restoration worthy of saving the boat Mr. Gordon Group and Mr. Anthony Musca (friend and financier) contracted Nick Frankovich of Encounter Yachts in Grand River, Ohio to restore Amorita to sailing condition (with tall cabin and marconi rig). The restoration work included wooding the hull and repairing (not replacing) what existed. The boat was then immediately put up for sale. Page 2 of 6
3 Donated to David Kiremijian, Full Sea Foundation in 1979 and trucked to Northport Long Island for storage at Brewers yard. May 1981 July 1982 July 1983 Purchased by Adrian and Jed Pearsall. Trucked to a warehouse in Wilkes- Barre Pennsylvania. After receiving a complete restoration to original specifications, including reframing and sistering, some new planks, new deck, cabin, cockpit, engine, interior and gaff-rig, she was transported to Ithaca New York to sail on Lake Cayuga. Transported to Newport RI to spectate during the America's Cup races Amorita was owner maintained and sailed by Jed and Adrian Pearsall, and crew, Bill Doyle, out of Groton Long Point, Conn. and Newport RI. Over this period of time the boat successfully competed in numerous classic yacht races in New England and was frequently the oldest boat in attendance Her mooring lines were cut / chaffed over-night by her mushroom and she went adrift, South-easterly, from Groton Long Point. She miracously navigated across Fisher s Island Sound and gently touched bottom off of Hungry Point, Fisher s Island -- approx. 3 miles from her starting point. She was found the next morning, without a scratch, 15 feet from a rock wall, just touching bottom enough to secure her. Her lone voyage was one even alert sailors have failed to make without incident Received extensive restoration by Giblin, Philbrick, and McClave. This work included new deck canvas, stripping and refinishing bright work, new mast step and bronze mast support, new frames, engine rebuild, and a new cockpit Restoration Achievements include: Best in Show - Mystic Seaport Antique Boat Show Best in Show - Thomas Benson Award - Classic Yacht Regatta --- Newport One of the 100 Greatest Yachts in America - Sail Magazine- Jan Cover Photo of West Marine Catalog. Featured in coffee table book, "Yacht Style" 1995 Amorita was (and still is) currently owned and sailed out of Newport RI by Jed Pearsall and Bill Doyle, and is being maintained by MPG of Mystic.
