I. POSITION TITLE: Rapid City Area School District 51-4 JOB DESCRIPTION Assistant Middle School Principal II. QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS: A. Education Level: Master s degree in approved program which qualifies for secondary principal certification with the State of South Dakota. Certification in Educational Leadership. B. Experience Desired: Minimum of three (3) years teaching experience at the middle level. C. Other Requirements: Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Knowledge of the best educational practices at the middle school level and current research on secondary education. Knowledge of laws, regulations and policies governing education in South Dakota. Knowledge of curriculum and instructional programs and practices for the middle level. Demonstrate knowledge in program budget and policy administration. Possess skills in human relations, leadership and conflict management. Communicate effectively with individuals of varied cultural and educational backgrounds. Possess effective student management skills as it relates to scheduling, discipline, and assessment. Possess effective oral and written communication skills. Possess effective management, organization, and leadership skills, including the ability to initiate and follow through on ideas and projects. Ability to use data in the decisionmaking process. III. REPORTS TO: Building Principal IV. RECEIVES GUIDANCE FROM: Assistant Superintendent of Student Achievement V. SUPERVISES: A. Assists the principal in the supervision of all building staff. B. Share the responsibility of supervision of all faculty members with extracurricular responsibilities. C. Students

VI. BASIC FUNCTION/PURPOSE OF POSITION: Assist the principal with administrative and instructional functions to meet the educational needs of students and carry out the mission and goals of the school and the District. In order to maximize student achievement, assist the principal in the supervision and discipline of students. VII. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES: A. The Educational Program Establish and maintain an effective curriculum and instructional program at the District and building levels. 1. Planning a. Assist in the development of curriculum. b. Assist in the development of philosophy, goals, and objectives. c. Assist in the development of the implementation process. d. Assist in the development of the maintenance process. 2. Implementation a. Communicate information to students, staff, and community. b. Direct the implementation of previously determined decisions, policies, or procedures. c. Direct staff development activities. d. Monitor classroom implementation. 3. Evaluation a. Determine if goals and objectives were met. b. Assess strengths and weaknesses. c. Develop data that can be used in program modification and decision-making. d. Assess student performance.

B. Administrative 1. Supervise instructional and support staff for improved school performance through goal development. 1. Staff member selects a challenging and obtainable goal(s) or target(s) for the year. 2. Identify activities that may be used. 3. Develop a schedule for progress review conference(s). 1. Establish a review schedule. 2. Monitor implementation of staff goals. Determine if goals and objectives were met. 2. Evaluate personnel as required by district policy and make recommendations to the director concerning additional personnel, assignments, and dismissals. 3. Establish and maintain effective building communications with regular staff, support staff, student teachers, and substitute teachers. 4. Supervise student personnel. C. Budget and Finance Plan, organize, and recommend annual expenditures of the school within the limits of available funds and resources in accordance with district guidelines.

D. Support Services Coordinate the activities of building personnel, and establish effective communications to achieve efficient and effective programs in the following areas. 1. Food services 2. Maintenance of buildings and grounds 3. Custodial upkeep 4. Transportation services 5. Health services 6. Warehouse 7. Guidance and special services E. Community Relations Maintain a school-community relations program to provide information to the public about policies, decisions, and general operations of the building and district. 1. Building publications. 2. Advisory committees. 3. Parent-Teacher conferences. 4. Meet with individuals and groups, publicly and privately, to discuss and interpret the various aspects of the school/district programs. F. Reporting Complete required reports as scheduled/requested, and submit to the appropriate personnel. G. Policy/Procedure Development/Collective Bargaining Effectively implement board of education policy. 1. Recommend new policy or policy revisions to the director. 2. Assist the board/administration in developing annual goals and assess achievement. 3. Initiate and coordinate the development of procedures to implement policy in the building.

H. Professional Responsibilities Maintain professional competency through professional reading, meetings, and other educational experiences. I. Perform other duties as assigned. VIII. EVALUATION: Performance of this position will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the board of education s policy on evaluation for professional personnel. IX. TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Twelve (12) month (205 days) work year. Salary and work year as established by the board of education.
