Mac Quick Start Guide Logging In Instead of the Novell Log In screen that you customarily see, a Mac OS X screen will display (see right.) Enter your regular CedarNet username and password and click the [Log In] button (it may take longer to log in than you are used to). Desktop and Toolbars The Dock The dock (lower toolbar; see below) includes shortcuts to programs used most often to allow for easy access to these programs. When a program is in use, a small black arrow will appear beneath the icon in the dock. Programs can be moved to the dock as well as removed from the dock. When a program is minimized, it will appear on the lower right corner of the dock next to the trash bin. This icon can then be clicked to bring the program/window back up onto the screen. To addd programs to the dock: When the program is opened, an icon will appear in the dock. Right-click on the icon and select Keep in Dock. To remove an icon from the dock, right-click on the icon and select Remove from Dock. The dock can be positioned on the screen in three locations: Right hand side, bottom of screen, or left hand side. To change the position of the dock: System Preferences > Dock > Position on Screen. Finder Firefox ichat GroupWise Messenger itunes imovie idvd System Preferences Minimized Program Microsoft GroupWise iphoto Garageband Office: Word, PowerPoint, Excel System Preferences System Preferences is equivalent to the Control Panel on a PC and can be accessed from the dock (the light switch) or from the blue Apple icon > System Preferences. Toolbar and Desktop The Toolbar (top of screen) has other important icons such as the blue Apple icon. This icon contains some of the options of the Start menu including log off, shut down, etc. The Toolbar also has the following icons: Finder (My Computer), File, Edit, View, Go, Window, and Help. On the right side of the Toolbar you will find icons for internet connection, volume, time, and spotlight (search). The desktop will primarily have only the APP 115 (and station #) icon which is equivalent to My Computer on a PC. You should NOT save to the desktop but should save to a flash drive instead. This is due to the fact that documents are deleted & cleared out periodically because the same desktop is used for each user. Mapping Network Drives Connecting to Network Drives In order to connect to a drive on the Mac Computers, passwords must be eight letters or LESS or access will not be granted. After entering your password, a screen will come up about sending your password, select [Continue]. To Map the H Drive Go > Connect to Server > Type server name associated with student account (teak, elm, oak, etc.) > [Connect] > log in > [Continue] > choose SERVER.DATA (ex: TEAK.DATA) > [OK] To Map the S Drive Go > Connect to Server > Type in sequoia > [Connect] > log in > [Continue] > choose SEQUOIA.DEPT > [OK] To Map the T Drive Go > Connect to Server > Type in sequoia > [Connect] > log in > [Continue] > choose SEQUOIA.PROJ > [OK] Disconnecting From Network Drives To disconnect from a Network Drive, you must drag the icon on the desktop to the trash can. The trash can will turn into an eject sign. Release the drive icon onto it. It will take a few moments for the drive icon to disappear from the desktop. Once it disappears, you are disconnected from that drive. Printing To print a document, go to: File > Print or Press [Command] (Apple key on the keyboard) + [P]. Special Mac Programs There are several general programs that can be used on the Mac and are typically found in the dock (or in Finder > Applications). Reminder: Do not save any work from these (or any) programs to the computer, but rather to a flash drive. Photo Booth With this program, you can take pictures of yourself and/or others from the camera located at the top middle of the computer monitor. When the camera is activated, a small green light will appear to the right of the camera. Garage Band This program can be useful to music majors who need to work with different tracks of music for projects. idvd You can burn a DVD onto a DVD-R with this program. imovie Pictures and video clips can be used to create a short movie. iphoto Pictures can be edited (very basic editing options) using this program. ichat This is the equivalent to AOL Instant Messenger. You must type in your name, account type (AIM or.mac), as well as your AIM account name and password. Then press [Continue]. When you open ichat, if someone else s log in name displays, you will need to click on ichat (in the toolbar) > Preferences > change the AIM screen name from the last person who used it to yours and enter your password. The buddy list window will now display your username. Click the drop down arrow under your name and select Available. If prompted for your password again, enter it and select [OK]. GroupWise GroupWise on the Macs is very similar to the regular GroupWise with some similarities to the web version as well. When GroupWise is opened, it will ask for a password, you must choose [Cancel] as it is asking for the password of the last person to use GroupWise on that computer. It will then bring up a screen for you to change the User ID and enter your password. Then select [OK]. MAC: Quick Start Guide 3 1/21/08 KDL/kpc
GroupWise Messenger GroupWise Messenger can also be used on the Macs. When activated, it will ask for your username and password. It may also ask for the server name or the port number. The server name is messenger..cedarville.edu and the port is 8300. This information must be completed in order to sign onto GroupWise Messenger. Final Comments CDs and DVDs The CD drive is located on the right side of the monitor (insert the CD with the label facing out towards you). A DVD will begin automatically once inserted into the CD/DVD slot. A CD program will load with a CD icon on the desktop. You can double click this icon and select the program to install. An audio CD will automatically open itunes. To eject a CD or DVD from the computer, press the [Eject] key on the keyboard (upper right corner of keyboard). You may need to hold down [Eject] until an eject symbol appears on the screen. Connections for Peripherals and Outside Sources In the back of the monitor, there is a headphone jack, an audio input jack (microphone), 3 USB ports, 2 firewire ports, a network port, and a mini DVI port. There is also 1 USB port on the back of the keyboard. Other Important Informatio on CedarNet There is currently no way to access CedarNet programs on the Mac computers. Quit Non-Responding Programs To force Another The computer is located inside the monitor instead of being a separate unit. a program to quit that is not closing, press [Command] + [Q] on the keyboard. way to force quit would be to select the blue Apple icon > Force Quit. Empty Trash In order to empty the trash can, right click on the trash icon > Empty Trash. Close, Minimize, Maximize Screen The close, minimize, and maximize buttons are a bit different on the Mac.
