Enter your regular CedarNet username and password and click the [Log In] button (it may take longer to log in than you are used to). Desktop and Toolbars The Dock The dock (lower toolbar; see below) includes shortcuts to programs used most often to allow for easy access to these programs. When a program is in use, a small black arrow will appear beneath the icon in the dock. Programs can be moved to the dock as well as removed from the dock. When a program is minimized, it will appear on the lower right corner of the dock next to the trash bin. This icon can then be clicked to bring the program/window back up onto the screen. To addd programs to the dock: When the program is opened, an icon will appear in the dock. Right-click on the icon and select Keep in Dock. To remove an icon from the dock, right-click on the icon and select Remove from Dock. The dock can be positioned on the screen in three locations: Right hand side, bottom of screen, or left hand side. To change the position of the dock: System Preferences > Dock > Position on Screen. Finder Firefox ichat GroupWise Messenger itunes imovie idvd System Preferences Minimized Program Microsoft GroupWise iphoto Garageband Office: Word, PowerPoint, Excel System Preferences System Preferences is equivalent to the Control Panel on a PC and can be accessed from the dock (the light switch) or from the blue Apple icon > System Preferences. Toolbar and Desktop The Toolbar (top of screen) has other important icons such as the blue Apple icon. This icon contains some of the options of the Start menu including log off, shut down, etc. The Toolbar also has the following icons: Finder (My Computer), File, Edit, View, Go, Window, and Help. On the right side of the Toolbar you will find icons for internet connection, volume, time, and spotlight (search). The desktop will primarily have only the APP 115 (and station #) icon which is equivalent to My Computer on a PC. You should NOT save to the desktop but should save to a flash drive instead. This is due to the fact that documents are deleted & cleared out periodically because the same desktop is used for each user. Mapping Network Drives Connecting to Network Drives In order to connect to a drive on the Mac Computers, passwords must be eight letters or LESS or access will not be granted. After entering your password, a screen will come up about sending your password, select [Continue]. Special Mac Programs There are several general programs that can be used on the Mac and are typically found in the dock (or in Finder > Applications). Reminder: Do not save any work from these (or any) programs to the computer, but rather to a flash drive. Photo Booth With this program, you can take pictures of yourself and/or others from the camera located at the top middle of the computer monitor. When the camera is activated, a small green light will appear to the right of the camera. The buddy list window will now display your username. Click the drop down arrow under your name and select Available. If prompted for your password again, enter it and select [OK]. GroupWise GroupWise on the Macs is very similar to the regular GroupWise with some similarities to the web version as well. When GroupWise is opened, it will ask for a password, you must choose [Cancel] as it is asking for the password of the last person to use GroupWise on that computer. It will then bring up a screen for you to change the User ID and enter your password. Then select [OK]. MAC: Quick Start Guide 3 1/21/08 KDL/kpc
