! California Mission Research Project Guidelines Dear Students and Parents, The following packet contains all the information you will need to complete your California Mission Research Project. Use this information as a checklist as you complete your project. Please bring this packet to class with you each week. Extra credit will be given to students who visit their mission. You may want to contact the mission so they can send you information and pictures. Basic Information 1. Students will be expected to submit a typed or neatly printed or hand-written mission report 2. Students will also be expected to make one of the following projects: A replica of mission (model) (NOT a store bought kit) A poster display depicting mission A scrapbook of mission A Power Point or other multimedia presentation of mission A video tour of mission 3. Students will be expected to present their mission in front of the class (Spanish presentations for DLIP students) Mission assignment: Student name:

Mission Report Requirements All work must be student generated in order to receive full credit! Remember: This is a 3-part project. You will need to complete and turn in a typed or neatly printed or handwritten report of your mission along with one of the following projects: A replica of mission (model) (NOT a store bought kit) A poster display depicting mission A scrapbook of mission A power point presentation of mission A video tour mission You will also present your mission to the class. Presentations must be under 10 minutes. Research Report Requirements: 100 points total All pages in your research report must be typed OR very neatly printed or handwritten and carefully edited for spelling, punctuation, and grammar. All report sections must be self and peer reviewed/edited BEFORE each rough draft due date. A completed editing checklist must be stapled to each rough draft when you turn it in. All sections of your report must have headings (see list of headings and information to cover on pages 3 and 4). Your report must include a floor plan of your mission. Your report must include at least 5 pictures WITH captions written in complete sentences. All sections of your report must include 1-3 paragraphs of information. If typing, font style should be Times New Roman, font size should be between 12 and 16, page numbers should be in the upper right hand corner of each page. All writing should be double spaced (skip lines if writing by hand). The cover of your report must include your name, #, teacher name, due date, and a colorful illustration of your mission. This illustration may be neatly hand-drawn and colored, or it may be a photo/printed image of the mission. Your report must include a Table Of Contents listing all sections of your report and page numbers where the sections are found. Your report must include a bibliography with 4 resources. At least one source must be the Internet, and one must be a book. Your final report must be placed in a clear plastic folder along with all rough drafts, checklists, and this packet attached to the end. Please organize items in the order found on the evaluation sheet (see page 4). Project Requirements: 30 points total Project must be done by the students and represent your mission. Project must be neat and show effort. Project should be creative and full of details. Presentation Requirements: 20 points total Presentation must include answers to the Presentation Questions. Questions are located in this packet. Students must present in a loud, clear voice, with proper eye contact and posture.

Topics to cover in your report Your report must have the following headings and cover the following topics: 1- Introduction: Name of your mission and why this mission is/was important. What was the purpose of the mission? 2- Founding of the mission Who founded the mission? When was it built? Where is it located? What city and region is it in? Is it in its original place? If not, where was it first located? Why was it built in that location? Who was it named after? What number is the mission? 3- Building of the mission Who built the mission? What materials were used to build it? What is the architectural style? What does the mission look like? What is the floor plan of the mission? What rooms does the mission have and what were they for? (Make sure you include a neat floor plan of the mission in your report). 4- Life at the mission What was daily life like on the mission for both Spaniards and Native Americans? What was produced on the mission? Who protected the mission? 5- Native Americans at the mission What Native American tribe(s) lived on the mission? What was life on the mission like for them? Were there ever any rebellions? What work did they do on the mission? What did they make and grow? 6- Interesting Information Was your mission restored? If so, when was it restored and why? How much of it was restored? What is the mission being used for today? What are some other interesting facts about the mission? 7- Map of California Include a short caption about the location of your mission (label mission on map). 8- Conclusion What did you discover as you did your report? What new things did you learn? How did you benefit from doing this project? What did you learn about doing research? Did anyone help you along the way? How did they help you?

Mission Report Evaluation Place items in the following order. Place final report in a neat folder with a clear cover. Cover page Name: Mission Report (with title, illustration, student name, date, & teacher name) /5 Table of Contents /5 Report pages with headings - Introduction /5 - Founding of the mission /10 - Building of the mission /10 - Life at the mission /10 - Native Americans at the mission /10 - Interesting Information /5 - Map of California with a short paragraph about the /5 location of your mission (label mission on map) - Conclusion /5-5 Illustrations with captions / 10 - Mission floor plan / 10 Bibliography / 10 Rough draft of research report This Mission Guidelines packet Report Total: / 100 #:

Presentation Questions Be sure to include the information from the following questions into your presentation. If information could not be found, please be sure to let us know in your presentation. What is the complete name of your Mission? Who was it named after? What number is your mission? In what city is your mission located? When was your mission built? Who founded your mission? What was the purpose for building your mission? What is the history of the building of your mission? What is the history of your mission s reconstruction? Which Native American group(s) settled at your mission? What was life like for them? What did the Native Americans do in their daily life at your mission? What products were farmed at your mission? What items were made at your mission? What are 3 interesting facts did you find about your mission? What purpose does your mission serve today?
