UP-213 & UP-266 Pre-Installation Guide The UP system consists of two modules, the Laser Ablation module and the Laser Power Supply. The specifications are below: Laser Ablation Module: Length 25" (64cm); Width 18" (46cm); Height (to eyepiece) 22" (56cm) Weight 130 lbs (59 kg). 100-110VAC, 3A, 50/60Hz 220-240VAC, 2A, 50/60Hz Laser Power Supply: Length 19" (48cm) Width 8.6" (22cm) Height 15" (38cm) Weight 55 lbs (25 kg) 100-110VAC, 10A, 50/60Hz 220-240VAC, 5A, 50/60Hz Laser Ablation module (with optional Trinoc assembly)

Front View Side View Back View Space Requirements The Laser Ablation Module requires 18 Wide x 25 Deep x 22 High (46 x 64 x 56 centimeters) of countertop space. In addition, space must be made for the computer monitor and keyboard if the system is not integrated with the mass spectrometer. The Laser Power Supply usually sits on the floor and occupies a 9 Wide x 15 Deep x 19 High (22 x 38 x 48 centimeters) footprint. The system should be placed a table or platform capable of supporting the 130 lb weight of the Laser Ablation module and/or the 55 lb Power Supply. Note: Although NWR does not recommend any particular carts or tables, customer have used the "Intermetro", one of the Metro BC Series Utility Carts with good results. These can be ordered from VWR Scientific products (800-932-5000). There are 3 sizes for the two-shelf carts (product #'s 22233-412, -416, -420) and three sizes for the 3-shelf carts (22233-414, -418, -422). For most applications, the sample flow path should be short. Therefore, the Laser Ablation System needs to be placed close to the mass spectrometer. Electrical Requirements The Laser Power Supply is shipped configured as either a 110 VAC, 10 A, 50/60 Hz or a 220 VAC, 5A, 50/60 HZ system. The Laser Ablation Module is shipped configured as either a 110 VAC, 5 A, 50/60 Hz or a 220 VAC, 3A, 50/60 HZ system. The operating voltage is specified at the time of the order. North American systems are typically configured for 110 VAV and come with standard 6 foot 3-prong power cables.

In either case, the system should be located within 6 feet (2 meters) of a minimum of two power outlets for the: Base Module, Laser Power Supply. Two additional outlets may be required for optional computer and computer monitor. Computer: Sharing of the MS computer or a dedicated computer can be used. With either method a video card would need to be installed in the computer. The Video Card is ordered with original system configuration and the NWR Field Service Engineer will install the PCB during the installation. All software and drivers will be supplied and installed by NWR. Note: If a computer is ordered through NWR, the computer will come preloaded with all software, drivers and video card. NWR supplies a 10 foot RS232 cable for communication between the computer and the Laser Ablation module and a 12 foot S-Video cable for video feed between the Laser Ablation module and the computer. The computer and/or the Laser Ablation module need to be located within reach of these cables. 25 foot cable options are available from NWR or can be purchased locally by the customer. Gas Lines: A carrier gas source is required to transport the ablated sample to the measurement system. Argon or Argon/Helium is normally used. It is recommended that 99.999% pure helium and argon gas be used as the cell and/or makeup gas. The supplies should be flow controlled to ensure the best analytical stability. NWR supplies 12 feet of 1/4 OD (1/8 ID) Tygon tubing to connect from the carrier gas source to the Laser Ablation module and from the Laser Ablation module to the torch. Plastic Swage TM connectors are provided to connect the Tygon tubing to the Laser Ablation module, all other supply line connectors are to be provided by the customer. NWR also supplies a torch adaptor (illustrated below). If the measurement system requires another type of adaptor, the customer should obtain the appropriate torch adaptor from the MS vendor. Glass Torch Adaptor figure 1 Glass Torch Adaptor figure 2 Most ICP systems incorporate independent mass flow control of the Argon nebuliser gas.

Argon Carrier Gas: When using Argon only as the carrier gas, connecting the 1/4 Tygon tubing from the Argon ( Neb ) line to the Laser Ablation module GAS IN port provides a regulated carrier gas flow to the Laser Ablation module. The customer is to supply the connection to the Argon ( Neb ) line. Do not supply argon directly from a gas bottle regulator, the gas should be precisely controlled by an MFC. The GAS OUT port is then connected to the torch using the proper torch adaptor. Helium Carrier Gas/Argon Makeup Gas: Many ICP-MS systems incorporate a second aerosol mass flow controller. This MFC must be calibrated for Helium. If this is not present, then an external gas control manifold is required for the control of the helium cell gas. The external MFC can be obtained independently or a complete MFC control module can be purchased from NWR. Using the 1/4" Tygon tubing, the Helium MFC output is connected GAS IN port on the back of the Laser Ablation module (or directly from the Helium gas supply with system with the MFC built into the Laser Ablation module). The GAS OUT port is then merged with the Argon makeup gas ( Neb gas line) using the NWR supplied Y connector, Tygon tubing and clamps. The customer is to supply the connection to the Argon ( Neb ) line. The combined gas line is then connected to the torch using the proper torch adaptor. See illustrations below.
