We provide an expository account of this result, detailing their methods. Motivated by this result, we define the (exact) capping genus of a knot to be the minimal genus of an (exact) Lagrangian cap of any Legendrian representative of the knot. Equivalently, this corresponds to finding the Legendrian representative with vanishing rotation number and maximal Thurston-Bennequin number that admits an (exact) Lagrangian cap. Using lower bounds determined by the classical invariants and upper bounds given by explicit construction, we compute the exact capping genus for the unknot, 3 1, 5 1, and 5 2, and the non-exact capping genus of 3 1 and 4 1. Undergraduate Research of New Jersey Minimal Degree Parameterizations of the Trefoil and Figure Eight Knots May 2011 - August 2012 Advisor: Donovan McFeron We determined the minimal degree sequence for two compact rational knots, namely the trefoil and figure-eight knots. We find explicit projections with the minimal degree sequence of both knots. This is done by modifying a non-compact rational minimal-degree parameterization of the trefoil and figure-eight knots to make it compact. We also set groundwork for higher-crossing knots.
