HFO-1234yf A new refrigerant on the horizon The introduction of HFO-1234yf is a very significant development in automotive air conditioning. However, it is important to appreciate that the new refrigerant will only have Production Vehicles (categories M1 and N1) receiving type approval from January 1st 2011 must use a refrigerant with a GWP (Global Warming Potential) of less than 150. The current refrigerant HFC R-134a does not meet this requirement. However, due to manufacturing issues the MAC Directive has been suspended until the end of 2012. All new vehicles (all categories) produced from January 1st 2017 must use a refrigerant with a GWP of less than 150. FAQ s Q. We are a franchise dealer. If a vehicle with HFO-1234yf experiences an A/C fault, what should we do if we have yet to purchase a suitable A/C machine? A. Please ask the vehicle manufacturer for their advice and also contact us for the latest technical information. With more vehicle manufacturer relationships and approvals than any other UK-based RMS supplier, Autoclimate is actively supporting the introduction of HFO-1234yf. vehicle with HFO-1234yf? A. As things stand, we believe that the chances of you seeing such a vehicle during 2012 and 2013 are low, given the number of known model introductions. Our advice is, that given that both the gas and a compatible A/C machine will be required; such repairs should be managed in cooperation with the appropriate franchise dealer, although if required we can supply a suitable a/c machine. limited impact during 2012 and well into 2013. By the end of 2012, it is estimated that fewer than 10 vehicle model types will have HFO-1234yf and to begin with its availability will be restricted to VMs (Vehicle Manufacturers) - hence its impact outside the franchise sector is most likely to be minimal. The initial global production of HFO-1234yf will only be sufficient to supply VMs production requirements. Further production is scheduled to come on stream during 2015. About HFO-1234yf Developed and manufactured jointly by DuPont and Honeywell Has a Global Warming Potential (GWP) of just 4, the maximum is 150 Q. I am an accident repairer. What if I have to repair a European consolidated number of new vehicles introduction with 1234yf air conditioning systems (in millions) Given the company s unique standing in the UK A/C servicing The performance characteristics are very similar to HFC market Autoclimate is maintaining close contact with the R-134a VMs in order to exchange information about the latest developments. Classed as a flammable refrigerant, albeit mildly. HFC R-134a is not flammable Lifespan if released to atmosphere is 11 days. HFC R-134a is 13 years The price will be higher than that of HFC R-134a, at least (Estimated data) initially 6 www.autoclimate.com 0345 505 0900 7
AC1234yf MACHINES A CHOICE OF AIR CONDITIONING MACHINES BUILT BY A WORLD LEADING MANUFACTURER SUPPLIED BY THE UK S RECOGNISED SPECIALIST.. Approvals Developed in conjunction with car manufacturers, these unit s meet the highest standards in performance, safety and efficiency. This ensures that HFO-1234yf based air conditioning systems are serviced in the most efficient, safest and most reliable way possible, giving you peace of mind. The German VDA, one of the most recognised and well respected associations in the global automotive industry commissioned the evaluation of the Robinair AC1234 machines through TUV Rheinland. The VDA s approval is an important purchase requirement for many VMs. Both the AC1234-7 and AC1234-8 have received VDA and TUV approval.* *When a refrigerant identifier is fitted Why choose Stand-alone over a Bi-Gas or converted unit? A Bi-Gas unit cannot be compliant with SAE J2843 or meet VM requirements and specifications, along with serviceability issues (when one circuit is damaged the other becomes inoperable) we strongly recommend our customers against the purchase of a Bi-Gas unit. Converted units Whilst an update kit may also look attractive to perspective buyers, we feel that it is unnecessary because workshops will require a stand-alone R134a machine for a long time yet. It is estimated that 60% of the vehicle market will still contain R134a in 2019. The cost of the update kit is also expected to be approximately 800, an additional expense which can be avoided. The burning question will be: When do I update my unit as R134a is still my most frequent gas used in servicing? Deep Recovery System SAE J8243 states that refrigerant management stations working on HFO-1234yf should recover at least 95% of refrigerant from the system. The Robinair AC1234 stations, and their Deep Recovery System, will recover 99% of refrigerant from the system. See page 34 for more detail
It is estimated that 20 million vehicles in the UK will have an R134a A/C system in 2019 R134a - In demand The hot topic Most conversations and literature involving vehicle air conditioning now include the topic of HFO-1234yf, the new refrigerant for automotive air conditioning. It will be a very slow and gradual process before workshops see these vehicles in any significant numbers and the importance of R134a and its continued servicing should not be overlooked. Remember that it is only those new vehicles that have a new type approval that have to use HFO-1234yf so the vast majority of vehicles coming off production lines will have R134a systems for the next few years at least and it is not until January 1st 2017 when all new vehicles have to be produced using HFO-1234yf. R134a the dominant refrigerant The initial global production of HFO- 1234yf will only be sufficient to supply VMs production requirements. Further production, when it will become available on-mass to the wider market is not scheduled until 2015 so R134a has a big part to play in your workshop service offering. There is currently no legislation or proposal for vehicles produced with R134a based A/C systems to be It is estimated that 20 million vehicles in the UK will have an R134a A/C system in 2019 switched over to HFO-1234yf and no legislation will stop a repairer or service centre from working on an R134a vehicle. With the average vehicle life currently at 9 years old, this represents a big opportunity to increase revenue streams into the workshop for a long time yet Minimum 99.9% pure R134a from Autoclimate 2019 Car Parc 61.2% 38.8% R134a HFO- 1234yf The purest refrigerant Autoclimate buys refrigerant from Mexichem and Harp, the biggest manufacturer of R134a. Leak Detection Electronic Audible and visual sensors alert the presence of leaks. Variable intensity helps to pinpoint leaks quickly and accurately. See page 44 for more detail. Detecting A/C leaks is essential to protect the environment and prevent time consuming and expensive problems. Autoclimate supplies a range of equipment and consumables for electronic, ultra violet dye, infrared, pressure and ultrasonic solutions. Ultrasonic Ultrasonic technology filters ambient noise and amplifies key frequencies to pick up the hissing sound of escaping gas. This approach is ideal for use with pressure testing equipment. Key Fact The Autoclimate Ultrasonic Marksman 2 kit is also ideal for detecting air leaks, gear or bearing wear and gasket integrity. See page 44 for more detail. Infrared Robinair 22791 leak detector uses infrared optics to create a refrigerant leak detector that combines sensitivity, speed, battery life, portability and ease of use. This unit will detect leaks as small as 0.15/4.25 oz/gms year. Key Fact The infrared leak detector is suitable on both R134a and the new HFO-1234yf refrigerant systems. See page 45 for more detail. Ultra Violet Dye After UV dye is added, leaks fluoresce under UV light where the dye has escaped. It is recommended you invest in quality high concentration UV dyes and high intensity UV lamps - small leaks are then easier and quicker to identify. See page 45 for more detail. Please note: When ordering dye for the first time, delivery mechanism, torch and visibility enhancing glasses will also be required. Autoclimate use Tracerline Important: Some dye manufacturers use Aromatic 200 solvent to disperse UV dyes. This product was originally designed for lacquers and also used in pest control. It is not suitable for automotive A/C as it may affect lubrication - causing wear, a higher risk of equipment failure and may invalidate warranty. Solvent free additive dyes VM approved Ultra-bright fluorescing dyes Particle free solution dyes High intensity detection lamps Wide choice of kits and systems Dyes for other fluids available See pages 52-53 for more detail. 18 www.autoclimate.com 0345 505 0900 19
Induction Heating This is an excellent product and is both innovative and durable - Prices vehicle repairs Mini-Ductor II Use Flameless heat to save time and money Save time and Money There are many instances during the repair process where certain nuts or bolts will require the use of heat to help loosen them, especially where they have seized. Traditionally this would involve the use of a blowtorch, or some type of flame, to apply heat to the nut. This method works but can also have a negative impact. For example, the areas around the focus of the work become very hot, with a risk of fire. The Mini-Ductor ll uses induction technology to create flameless heat. The heat is only concentrated on the area you are working on and will only heat metal or treated plastics. This minimises risk of collateral damage and cool off periods, saving the repairer time and money. Some of the different uses The Mini-Ductor ll is supplied with 3 different coil types, which can be easily and quickly changed depending on your application. These different coil types help the vehicle technician reach practically every area of the vehicle. There are many applications for the Mini- Ductor ll including: All types of seized hardware, trim removal, inline application, fuel tank straps, preventing expensive wheel damage, hail dent removal, steering and suspension, bearings, gears and pulleys On demand The Mini-Ductor II has a lightweight, ergonomic design, and weighing just over 1kg it is easy to pick up and carry around the workshop. Also, with the heat output being on demand, there is no need to power up and wait for the Mini-Ductor ll to be used, it can heat up nuts and bolts in typically 15 seconds. The addition of the Mini-Ductor ll to the workshop tool range could mean the end of the acetylene torch for the majority of jobs of this type. Remember to tell the insurance company if it does, your renewal fee could come down! The Mini-Ductor ll helps save time: Remove and install automotive glass Remove stubborn graphics and badges in seconds (the glue is removed with the decal) Remove and install side mouldings in under an hour Remove hard to remove nuts and bolts Safely remove adhesive bonded components on metal surfaces. Perform tasks that previously could not be carried out with traditional heat sources The Mini-Ductor ll helps improve quality and safety: It only heats metal objects No more burning or melting of glass, paint, plastic, or other non-metallic materials Rapidly heats rusted fasteners without an open flame, enabling technicians to work near plastic and other sensitive components, thus significantly reducing the risk of fire. See page 40 for more detail Tried and Tested RAPS (Repairer Approved Product Scheme) provides a new level of accreditation for products. RAPS give a selection of repairers the opportunity to test products before they are released by Autoclimate for general sale. Autoclimate will only sell the product if it passes the RAPS test. It is Autoclimate s belief that RAPS is a standard which can be trusted by repairers, because it is set by repairers. The Mini-Ductor ll received 80% in testing See review comments online at www.autoclimate.com
Diagnostics Diagnostics - a good working practice for the modern accident repair centre Why Should an Accident Repair Centre have a Diagnostic tool? Progressing Technology VMs have been driven in recent years to make their vehicles not only more environmentally friendly, but also enhance their driver s comfort and experience. This has led to the reduction of vehicle weight, and more dependency is placed on electrics to help deliver comfort. For the vehicle to work as efficiently as it can, the introduction of a single line communication cable known as a CAN Network is commonplace. This in principle is a single cable passing data from one ECU to another and in turn activates the necessary component. More necessity than want With ECUs now placed around the vehicle, it is not just the extras that may require diagnostic tools in the repair process. Safety systems such as airbags, and newer automatic distance control features are all controlled and linked into ECUs. Repair work that is carried out will require the use of a diagnostic tool a vast majority of the time if the job is to be completed correctly. ECUs need to be reprogrammed to accept new parts, and warning lights need to be reset; all jobs which are not possible without a diagnostic tool. Looking for additional revenues A vehicle in the workshop after an accident is no longer visually inspected easily; there can be a number of warning lights triggered and other damage that needs repairing. It is best working practice, to use a diagnostic tool on the vehicle whilst it is there, at no additional cost. Another added benefit is that problems or faults may be identified which are unrelated to the accident. You can make the policyholder aware of this, and they may authorise the additional work to be carried out - money received directly into the workshop.
Helping to increase the entire workshop performance Reducing key-to-key time. External factors An important factor for the aftermarket is key-to-key time ; how fast and efficiently a vehicle is repaired and returned to the customer. However, as vehicle technology has advanced, the challenges of repairing vehicles have increased. New technologies can require the use of a subcontractor or passing the vehicle onto a Franchise Dealer. Both deliver little profit, increase your costs, extend your key-to-key time and put strain on other jobs in the workshop. The mega macs 42 will reduce the need to subcontract work. Word of mouth Improving the key-to-key time will benefit and strengthen relationships with work providers as well as with the policyholder. Customer retention is key to many accident repairers, doing a good job for a policyholder in a quicker than expected fashion would result in possible future work with that customer and further work if they spread the word. Being up to speed with your diagnostics can truly help your business to grow. Fits in well with the MOT process Since January the 1st 2012, new rules have been put in place by the Department for Transport (DfT) affecting the MOT; this has been implemented to comply with European testing procedures. Since April 1st 2012 the new rules must be met to receive your MOT certificate. If a car has any illuminated warning lights, whether it is the airbag, seat belt, ESP, SRS, ABS or others, it must fail the MOT. The mega macs 42 can reset a number of these lights, for example: See page 40 for more detail Electronic stability control Headlight main beam Electronic power steering Brake fluid level Tyre pressure monitoring system Airbag Seat belt pre-tensioner Steering & suspension. Very good and easy to use with good data coverage - FRF Accident Repair Centre The mega macs 42 scored 90% in the R.A.P.S test process See review comments online at www.autoclimate.com

BT-250 Battery Tester 20% of vehicles arriving in the workshop have a battery problem which is currently going unnoticed Fast accurate results Handheld - 12v digital battery tester Batteries Maintenance/Test Although the days of topping up the electrolyte in an automotive battery are long gone, a battery still needs some maintenance, especially if the vehicle has been in storage. The best and simplest way to test the battery to see if it needs charging or replacing is by using the Schumacher BT-250 from Autoclimate. Every time a vehicle visits your workshop, it takes just a few seconds to test the battery accurately to the manufacturer s own specifications Missing a sales opportunity / Customer satisfaction The more batteries you check, the greater the opportunity to sell a replacement battery, offer a battery re-charge, or advise the customer that their battery needs replacing soon to avoid a costly breakdown call out. Any time of the year Did you know that a battery loses charge faster in hot weather than cold? Checking batteries should not just be a winter job. Batteries fail quicker in the warmer weather. The heat speeds up the chemical reaction that releases the stored electricity. A vehicle left stored in your compound or car park will see its battery degrade faster in the summer. It s the increased resistance in the wiring and electrical components that causes the weakened battery to fail in colder weather. A good, solid, easy to use product and great accuracy - Penning s ARC The BT-250 Battery Tester scored 80% in the R.A.P.S test process See review comments online at www.autoclimate.com Advantages of using the BT-250 Battery Tester Low Cost Easy to use Fast return on investment - 3 battery sales cover the cost Safe to use Accurate Customer satisfaction Minimise inconvenience Save time BT-250 features Tests 12v batteries Compatible with standard and AGM battery types Results in 5-7 seconds Tests to all popular standards SAE, DIN, IEC, EN & CA Industry standard test procedure and accuracy Indicator to ensure the correct connection of clamp to terminals Charging system test Super-grip heavy duty clamps Impact resistant protective boot included Large clear LCD display 9v battery included See page 41 for more detail
Clean simple way to reduce air locks Safe and low cost operation for long service life Coolant Exchange The Importance of Purging Trapped Air Airlocks The Problems Erratic temperature gauge readings, engine overheating, and poor heater performance are just some of the problems caused by airlocks. Trapped air often works its way out of a cooling system after a day or two of driving, but unless a vehicle s cooling system is designed to be self bleeding, you need to take special steps to purge trapped air from the cooling system whenever the system is opened for service. Remember airlocks can cause under performance of the coolant system which leads to faster corrosion of parts, correct vacuum filling eliminates this risk. Modern Cooling Systems Many of today s passenger cars are designed with heaters positioned higher than the rest of the cooling system. This leads to air pockets tending to collect in the heater circuit. Unfortunately, many engines with bleed screws have the bleed points positioned lower than the heater. Engine-mounted bleed screws help prevent airlocks within the engine block and heads, but they may not help when it comes to purging trapped air from the heater core. An easy to use solution All existing refill procedures are complicated, time consuming and very messy. This can be eliminated with the Vacufill which is simple and safe to use. Vacufill Quick, Easy, Clean Suitable for most vehicles The Vacufill is a coolant exchanger designed for ease of use based on the use of compressed air. With simple knob controlled operations, the process of coolant exchange can now be completed in 15 minutes in a non labour intensive fashion. Suitable for most vehicles with an expansion tank, overflow tank or overflow pipe-based system, it comes supplied with a range of adapters. The Vacufill does not require vehicle hoses to be cut or disconnected saving the cost of replacement parts and potential lost labour time. Refills in seconds Fast, efficient and low cost to operate, the Vacufill s built-in vacuum function will test cooling systems for leaks. Whilst the system is under vacuum, fresh pre-mixed coolant can be drawn into the system. This process means no airlocks and a more successful service, in a clean simple manner. Perfect for coolant checks Included in the Vacufill package are accustrips and a refractometer, creating the perfect combination for annual anti-freeze checks and antifreeze replacement. The refractometer will display the amount of protection afforded by the coolant (temperature based) whilst the accustrips give an indication of how effective the coolant will be against corrosion to the system. Additional Revenue The Vacufill also offers a great upsell opportunity for any workshop and adds an additional revenue stream which is ever vital in today s competitive environment. Test repaired systems Accident repairers can benefit greatly from using the Vacufill. Recovery, storage and refilling become one simple operation, allowing the repairer to use the same coolant recovered and saving on the cost of new replacement coolant. All the staff that use this have good comments - MDS The Vacufill scored 84% in the R.A.P.S test process See review comments online at www.autoclimate.com See page 37 for more detail
Airlift II Eliminates any possible airlocks Handheld - professional coolant refilling tool Refills in seconds Fast, efficient and low cost to operate, the Airlift ll uses compressed air to pull a vacuum on the cooling system testing for leaks, as recommended by all major VMs. Whilst the system is under vacuum, fresh pre-mixed coolant can be drawn into the system. This process means no airlocks and a more successful service, in a clean and simple manner. Tried and Tested Autoclimate will only sell the product if it passes the RAPS test. It is the belief of Autoclimate that RAPS is a standard which can be trusted by repairers, because it is set by repairers. RAPS gives a selection of repairers the opportunity to test products before they are released by Autoclimate for general sale and the Airlift II is no exception. Suitable for most vehicles The Airlift ll is a coolant refilling tool designed to use compressed air. With simple valve controlled operations, a quick vacuum leak check and effective refilling process can be carried out in minimal time. Supplied with a fits-all cone adapter the Airlift ll is suitable for use on expansion tank, overflow tank or overflow pipe based systems It is an amazing product for refilling any car radiator. We used it on a Honda Civic diesel and it cut the time from 1 hour to 5 minutes. We could not believe how quick it was - Autospray Motor Body Works, Aberdeen The Airlift ll scored 86% in the R.A.P.S test process See review comments online at www.autoclimate.com See page 37 for more detail
Anti-Bacterial Cleaning Autoclimate recommends that vehicle air conditioning systems are run all year round. In addition to reducing service and maintenance problems, A/C also dehumidifies the air entering the vehicle and also filters soluble or very fine airborne contamination. Autoclimate offers two solutions: The Opportunity A/C anti-bacterial servicing is a worthwhile and profitable opportunity and customers will appreciate the benefits immediately. Therefore it is important that all systems must remain clean and free of bacteria. Autofresh One Shot This combined A/C cleaner and deodorant is the perfect quick fix to keep on the shelf. To apply: Start the engine, set temperature to cold, fans to maximum, recirculation on and open face vents Shake the can well, slide the passenger seat right back and place the can in the footwell Close the windows, press the button to start the spray and exit the vehicle Return after 20 minutes to a fresh smelling vehicle See page 54 for more detail Ultrasonic Nebuliser To tackle the problem at source, this system uses ultrasonic technology to disperse very fine droplets of the anti-bacterial cleaning solution directly into the A/C evaporator. It is a professional level system that is ideal for longer lasting results, or where the problem is particularly acute or persistent only requires minimal labour time. To apply: Use one bottle of solution per vehicle Place the nebuliser in the passenger footwell with the outlet tube running to the air recirculation inlet valve Run the vehicle with the A/C off, heater at minimum temperature and low fan speed Close all doors Return after 20 minutes to a fresh smelling vehicle www.autoclimate.com 0345 505 0900 31

Legislation The threat of climate change is well known and the 1997 Kyoto Protocol established binding agreements to reduce man-made emissions of greenhouse gases. Legislation matters European Council approved agreements in 2002 R134a, the refrigerant used in vehicle air conditioning was one of the gases listed that needed to be reduced Since 2002 F-Gas Regulations have worked their way into law across EU member states The Law Since September 2009 it has been a criminal offence to charge a system with R134a without reasonable due diligence being undertaken to ensure that there are no leaks in the system Since July 2010 anyone handling refrigerant to service or repair car or light commercial vehicle A/C systems, must hold a nationally recognised qualification Refrigerant manufacturers since July 2007 have not legally been allowed to fill disposable cylinders for sale in the EU Key Fact R134a, the refrigerant used in vehicles built after 1993, has a global warming potential (GWP) of 1,300 over 100 years. Even relatively small amounts of refrigerant lost to the atmosphere will cause an adverse effect to climate change. HFO 1234yf has been introduced as the new gas 64
