HD+ and HbbTV
HD+ and HbbTV Why an HbbTV association? HbbTV is a dynamic industry standard which offers neutral technological access to seamless combination of TV service delivered by broadcast with those delivered by broadband Prior to HbbTV only 2 proprietary interactive TV standard available: MHEG-5 in UK and MHP in Italy SES was one of the first industry to join as founding members of the HbbTV. SES is part of the governance of the pan-european association via the HbbTV Steering Group 36
HD+ and HbbTV Why an HbbTV standard? HbbTV specification include components of widely deployed and established technologies such as CE- HTML DVB, W3C, OPEN ITV Forum and MPEG-DASH The basis of HbbTV is CE-HTML designed for reduced platform capabilities of consumer electronic platforms. On top, HbbTV, via the OIPF specification, defines a set of JavaScript APIs to transform static web page into an application environment. This mainly allows interaction with the broadcast environment (channel list, initiate recordings etc) and media streaming over IP. HbbTV is designed to link the above applications to DVB broadcast. Broadcast streams contain AITs (Application Information Tables) which associates applications with broadcast services. Applications can be distributed over IP through URL links in these tables or if no IP is available may be carried in the broadcast streams using DSMCC. If an IP connection is available, applications can make use of internet services, for example catch-up services. HbbTV 1.5 the standard integrates adaptive streaming MPEG-DASH and optionally DRM. HbbTV 2.0 will provide additional functionalities such as HTML5, HEVC and support for companion screens 37
