Sweden gets new banknotes and coins In 2015 and 2016, Sweden will get new banknotes and coins. We will also get a new denomination, a 200-krona banknote. A familiar friend will also make a comeback as we will begin to issue the 2-krona coin again. The new banknotes will have new security features that provide better protection against counterfeiting, and the coins will be smaller and lighter. The banknotes and coins will be introduced in two stages, in October 2015 and October 2016. For a period, both the current and the new banknotes and coins will be in circulation at the same time. The current banknotes and coins will gradually become invalid (apart from the 10-krona coin which will not be replaced). So as not to risk being left with invalid banknotes and coins at home, pay with them or deposit them in your bank account as soon as possible. When you get a new banknote, tilt it to make sure that it is genuine. You should see images that change colour and images that move and shift between motifs. New banknotes in October 2015 On 1 October 2015, the Riksbank will begin issuing new 20-, 50- and 1,000-krona banknotes with new motifs. We will also get a new denomination, a 200-krona banknote. It may take some time before you see a new banknote as the current notes will continue to be in circulation for a while. Tilt the banknote to make sure it s genuine The new banknotes have new security features which make them difficult to counterfeit. If you tilt the banknote, you can check that it s genuine. Security strip A vertical strip with three windows. The windows contain images that move and change motif when you tilt the banknote. Colour-shifting image An image that gradually changes colour between gold and green when you tilt the banknote. Security strip The new 200-krona and 1,000-krona banknotes have a vertical security strip. The strip has three windows. The windows feature images that move and alternate motif between KR and a royal crown when you tilt the banknote. The security strip is placed to the left of the portrait on the obverse of the banknote. The colour of the strip varies on the different denominations of banknote.
Colour-shifting image The new banknotes have a colour-shifting image linked to the person portrayed on the note. The banknote s denomination is also shown in the image. The image and the denomination gradually change colour between gold and green when you tilt the banknote. Banknotes that will become invalid after 30 June 2016 You can continue to use the current 20-, 50- and 1,000-krona banknotes until 30 June 2016 to pay for things or to deposit them into your bank account. After 30 June 2016, it will no longer be possible to pay with these banknotes. You will still be able to deposit them into your bank account until 31 August 2016. Don t leave it too late! There may be limits to how much cash banks and shops will accept. Ask your bank or local shop for more information. After 31 August 2016, the Riksbank can redeem the invalid banknotes for an administration fee of SEK 100. Why the banks have to ask questions When you want to deposit money at the bank or make some other transaction, you must be prepared to answer questions about where the money comes from and to show valid identification. In some cases, the bank may also need to see contracts, receipts, invoices or other documents that prove how you received the money. This relates to the Act on Measures against Money Laundering and Terrorist Financing, which specifies, among other things, that banks are obliged to find out where deposits come from. This check has to be made even when there is no suspicion of a crime. The aim of the Act is to prevent banks and other financial companies from being used for money laundering, that is money from criminal activities being converted into money that can be deposited in a bank account and used. These regulations apply to all financial companies in the EU. The Riksbank also complies with the Act on Measures against Money Laundering and Terrorist Financing.
What will happen to the 100-krona and 500-krona notes and the coins? In October 2016, the Riksbank will begin to issue new 100-krona and 500-krona banknotes, together with new 1-, 2- and 5-krona coins. However, the 10-krona coin will remain unchanged. The current 100-krona and 500-krona banknotes as well as all the current coins, apart from the 10-krona coin, will become invalid after 30 June 2017. The 10-krona coin will remain unchanged. More information about the new banknotes and coins and those that will become invalid will be presented next year.
Use your coins now! Remember that, with the exception of the 10-krona coin, all coins will become invalid in 2017. So start using your coins now, especially if you have lots of them. That way, you won t risk being left with invalid coins. There may be limits to how much cash banks and shops will accept, so don t leave it until the last minute.
