ReelSafe Brake Using a patented (U.S. Patent # 688) hydraulic pump system, the ReelSafe brake limits the retraction speed of a spring-powered reel, so if an accidental uncontrolled retraction occurs, the retracting cable and/or cable-end accessory will not injure personnel or damage property. The ReelSafe is preset at the factory to a safe speed, but it can be adjusted to the user s preference after reel installation. Some variation in retraction rate will be noticeable during large temperature variations such as seasonal temperature change, and minor adjustments may be necessary. Saddle Clamp Saddle clamps, also known as strain relief clamps are used to relieve tension on the cable or hose while allowing the cable or hose to hang properly. These are typically used in conjunction with torque reels - See Pg. 0. Ideal for push-button pendant applications, air tools, electric tools, and theater cables Provision is made for fast, simple attachment of cable and pendant station. The model SDI clamp is secured to the cable at the proper location thus providing a strain relief and allowing the cable to hang properly. PowerReel Selection Charts The tables on the following pages are used to select reels for the most common applications: Lift, Drag, Retrieve, and Stretch. Please refer to application definitions on Pg.. The tables include the most common cable sizes and cable lengths. Very long and/ or large cables might require a motorized reel. Contact Conductix- Wampfler for recommendations. Reel styles included in the following charts: 100 - design details shown on pages 6-9 - design details shown on pages 10-1 1900 & 00 - design details shown on pages 1-15 00 & 600 - design details shown on pages 16-17 Choosing a Reel Referring to the Specification Check Sheets on pages -5, the basic four criteria to select a reel from the following tables are: 1. Application (lift, drag, retrieve, stretch) - listed in the headings on the following tables. Wire Gauge (in AWG) - Listed in the headings of the following tables.. Number of Cable Conductors - listed in the second column from the left on the following tables. Total Cable Length Needed (in feet) - listed across the tops of the columns (total length needed is determined on Page 5 of the Check Sheet). This is the total footage of cable on the reel spool. There can be up to three different reel choices within a given set of criteria. Each one of the choices will technically do the job, however, depending on the applications and circumstance, a reel larger than the minimum size might be advisable. Contact Conductix-Wampfler for details. It is important to consider all environmental conditions, mechanical and interface needs, electrical needs, and the total cable length needed, before you select a reel. This will insure that the reel will operate properly and will provide the maximum operating life. Please refer to the Specification Data Sheets on pages -5. IMPORTANT: If the reel is expected to payout and retract at a very high cycle rate, or is operating in an exceptionally harsh environment, you may need Premium Cable - contact Conductix-Wampfler for details. If you don t see your specific application or cable type/length listed here, or if you have an unusual application, be sure to contact Conductix-Wampfler Sales. We design and build custom cable reels - more than anyone in the market - and have extensive experience applying reels to demanding industrial situations. Appendix I Basic Cable Reel Components and Terms Roller Guide Spring Motor Ball Stop - If Supplied Slip Ring Ratchet - if Supplied Flange Base Entrance Ring and Spool Drum Slip Ring Enclosure TERM PAYOUT RETRACT OR REWIND BASE SPRING MOTOR SPOOL SLIP RING ROLLER GUIDE ACTIVE LENGTH SAFETY WRAP SAG FACTOR DEFINITION Pulling cable out of the reel (off the spool) Rewinding the cable back into the reel. Supports and mounts the reel. Might also be called a frame or stand. A single spring or several springs working together that store energy as a cable is pulled out to provide power to retract/rewind the cable back onto the spool. Composed of a drum and two flanges Electromechanical device consisting of an energized ring and a sliding brush that transfers power from the stationary feeder cable to the cable that is wound on the rotating spool. Guides the cable during payout and rewind. Can be mounted on the reel or separate from the reel The difference between the minimum payout and maximum payout of cable. Cable that stays on the reel at maximum payout of cable - Usually two complete wraps on the drum. The effect of gravity on actual travel length during stretch applications (10%) TERM DEFINITION (See Illustrations on Pg. ) LIFT HEIGHT LIFT DRAG STRETCH RETRIEVE VERTCAL RETRIEVE The distance between where the cable lays to the center line of spool. The reel is mounted stationary and the cable is pulled out of the reel by machine or by hand (as with an overhead light source or a pendant station To retract the cable, the reel needs to lift the cable vertically. The reel is usually stationary. Cable can be pulled out by hand or by machine. To retract the cable, the reel must drag the cable through supports or along the ground horizontally. This application is the hardest on cable life. The reel may be stationary mounted or mounted onto moving equipment. Cable is pulled out by machine. The cable is stretched horizontally and is mostly unsupported. An extra 10% in cable beyond active travel is required to account for cable sag. The reel needs to pickup retrieve the cable. The reel is mounted on moving equipment. Cable is pulled out by machine. Looks like a lift application, except that the cable reel is mounted on the machine member that is moving up and down. The power source is at the end of the cable above the spool. The reel needs only to retrieve the cable back into the spool as the reel moves up with the machine. 80 Visit www.conductix.us for the most current information.

Appendix II Motor Amperage and Electrical Formulas The chart below lists the most common combinations of motor HP (horsepower) in relation to voltage used and the resulting amperage draw. To use the chart, determine amperage draw based on horsepower and voltage. Then use the Cable Data Chart in Appendix IV to determine cable gauge and number of conductors required for your application. Direct Current requires conductors. Single phase requires conductors. Threephase requires conductors. NOTE: For DC magnets, the Slip Ring must be sized to twice the magnet s cold amp rating. The cable amp rating does not need to be doubled.
