ABOUT SUMMITSOFT FONTS Thank you for purchasing Creative Fonts from Summitsoft Corporation. This font software includes OpenType fonts for use on personal and business projects (i.e. personal websites, business cards, presentations, newsletters, party invitations, etc.), as well as for commercial use projects (anything for profit including advertisements, web banners, logos, websites, etc.). If this is the first time you are using a Summitsoft font product, you will need to install the Font Management System. Installing the Font Management System does not automatically install the fonts from the CD into your system. You will need to use a font manager to preview and choose the fonts you are interested in using. Once you install a font, it will become available in all your applications (make sure to close any running applications prior to installing the font; or just close and reopen any application to get the newly installed fonts to appear in your system font list). Note: It is not recommended to have more than 500 fonts installed on your system at any time. Installing over 500 fonts can seriously degrade your system, causing slow performance and system crashes. Therefore, only install those fonts that you will be using. The Font Management System protects previously installed fonts and vital system fonts by only removing fonts that were installed using the Font Management System; however, you can uncheck the Protect my installed fonts checkbox found in Tools>Preferences if you need to uninstall a font that was already installed. Please read the warning prior to doing so. Summitsoft assumes no responsibility for any core operating font you delete from your computer which can render your computer inoperable. PRODUCT REGISTRATION Registering your font product is important. Registration provides you with timely access to the latest product updates, technical support, valuable information about new product releases, articles, tips and hints, and special offers on other Summitsoft products. You can register online at: http://www.summitsoftcorp.com/windows software/register/register.html 3

USING THE FONT MANAGEMENT SYSTEM Summitsoft s Font Management System is an innovative way to manage and preview the fonts you want to use in your online or print projects. Working with this program is easy once you familiarize yourself with the user interface. When you first run the Font Management System a backup of your currently installed system fonts will be created. This may help you recover any deleted system font by choosing the Restore Fonts button in the Font Management System application window. This backup is only intended for use on the computer your Font Management System program was installed on. THE USER INTERFACE The Main Window is divided into a left pane, top right pane, and bottom right pane. 4

The left pane features the following tabs: Installed Fonts, Browse, Collections and Worklist. When a Summitsoft font CD is placed in your drive, a Summitsoft Fonts tab will also appear. Installed Fonts Click on the Installed Fonts tab to display the list of fonts currently installed on your computer. Summitsoft Fonts This tab will only be active if you have inserted any of the Summitsoft Font collection CDs in the CD Drive. Once you click on this tab it displays the entire set of fonts available on the Summitsoft CD, listed in alphabetic order. Browse This tab is used to browse for fonts that are stored in a particular folder or a location on your hard drive. Once you locate the Fonts folder click on it to display the fonts inside the Fonts Pane. 5

Collections Collections opens the tree view of different font folders organized in to groups containing specific fonts. This is useful if you wish to use a particular set of fonts for one project and a different set for another. You can organize them into different group folders under the My Font Collections main folder. Worklist The Worklist features the basic options to add and edit fonts to a Worklist before you install or use them. You can preview the fonts, save the Worklist or you can even install/uninstall the fonts from here. If any of these sub tabs are not shown, you can open them by going to View in the menu bar and selecting the appropriate section. The top right pane features the following tabs: Character Table, Multiple and Recent Fonts. Multiple The Multiple tab lists the name of the font and a quick preview of the alphabet in Uppercase, Lowercase or both. Once you select a particular font in the Font Pane, the Multiple section automatically highlights the corresponding font which makes it the quickest method to preview a particular range of fonts. Character Table This tab shows the entire list of characters available for the selected font from the Fonts Pane. You can click on the character and hold the mouse button down to view a larger character display and to get more details about the selected character. Recent Fonts This tab shows a list of all fonts installed with the Font Management System. This is useful in quickly uninstalling any fonts you no longer need in your projects. If any of these sub tabs are not shown, you can open them by going to View in the menu bar and selecting the appropriate section. The bottom right pane features the following tabs: Font Properties and Sample Text. Sample Text As the name suggests, this tab displays a sample text of the selected font and provides options to format it. It features a list of pre defined text samples to make it easier to view the style of any selected font. 6

Font Properties This tab opens and lists the advanced properties for the selected Font inside the Sample Text pane. You can view the properties of any selected font, organized into four categories Name, Properties, Metrics and Advanced. If any of these sub tabs are not shown, you can open them by going to View in the menu bar and selecting the appropriate section. THE FONT MANAGEMENT SYSTEM MENU Click on the Installed Fonts menu on the main toolbar to view the fonts installed on your computer. Click on Browse to locate the fonts stored in different folders on your hard drive. Click on Worklist to open the Worklist window where you can work with fonts, edit them and save your Worklist for future use. The Collections button lets you display the font collections organized into different groups. Click on Font Properties to open the properties of the selected font. Click on Sample Text to preview, edit or copy the Sample Text for the selected font in the font pane. Click on the Install Font button to install a new font. Click on the Uninstall Font button to uninstall an existing font from your computer. Click on the Print button to make a printout of the selected font(s). Click on the Print All button to make a printout of all installed system fonts. Temporarily Activate installs the selected font(s) only until the next time you restart your computer. 7

SEARCHING FOR FONTS Summitsoft s Font Management System allows you to quickly search for fonts stored on your computer. To do this, simply go to Tools in the menu bar and select Font Search. This will open a search window where you can specify what font format you are looking for and where on your computer you want to look. The Font Search can look for TrueType, OpenType, and PostScript fonts. Once the search is complete, you can save your search or add the fonts in your search results to a Worklist. EXPORTING FONT INFORMATION This option lets you export all system fonts or selected fonts as a web page (HTML), a Rich Text Format document (RTF) or a Text (TXT) file. This can be useful in creating font sample catalogs for easy viewing in a printed document or online website. To do this, simply go to Tools in the menu bar and select Export Font Information. A Font Export dialog window will open. Now select the Font Range and the format you want to Export To and then click the Next button. Browse for an output destination folder you want to save your exported file to, enter a File Name and then click Finish. Your exported file will now be viewable in your selected destination folder. PRINTING YOUR OWN FONT CATALOG Summitsoft s Font Management System gives you an easy way to create and print your own sample font list. This allows you to quickly search through a printed document of font text samples to locate a font that is right for your project. 8

You have two choices: 1) Print only selected fonts To do this, simply select a font or range of fonts from any left pane tab and then click the Print button on the toolbar. This will show you a print preview of what your font list will look like before you print. Each font sample shows the font name, upper and lower case characters, and a pangram. 2) Print all fonts currently installed on your computer To do this, simply click the Print All button on the toolbar. This will show you a print preview of what your currently installed font list will look like before you print. Each font sample shows the font name, upper and lower case characters, and a pangram. 9

FONT FAQS 1) How do I get the fonts to show up in my applications? Answer: The first time you place the font disc into your drive, it will install the Font Management System which you will need to view the fonts available on the CD ROM. Once that installs, you can open the program by double clicking on the desktop icon, or going into Start> Programs> Summitsoft> Font Management System> Font Management System. Once it opens (make sure to keep the font disc in the drive) the active tab shown in the left pane should show the Summitsoft Fonts from the CD in your drive. Simply select any font or range of fonts from this preview pane and then click the Install Font button in the program toolbar. Now open any program that uses fonts (Microsoft Word, for example) and the font will be available in the dropdown font menu. You can also select the Browse tab to locate the fonts you installed into My Documents> Summitsoft Fonts> Creative Fonts. You can also choose to Temporarily Activate the font(s) from the CD which will install the selected font(s) only until the next time you shut down or restart your computer. This is valuable in saving space on your computer and only using certain fonts for the time it takes you to complete a particular project. 2) How do I install fonts that are not located on a Summitsoft CD ROM? Answer: If the fonts are part of another CD collection, simply place the font CD in your drive and then open the Font Management System to preview and install the fonts as directed in the previous question. If your fonts are located on your hard drive, open the Font Management System and go to the Browse tab at the bottom of the left preview pane. This will allow you to locate other fonts stored on your computer. Selecting a folder from the top will then show any fonts stored in that folder in the bottom of the split preview section on the left. Once the fonts from the folder appear, you can install them by selecting the font(s) and clicking the Install Font button in the program toolbar. 10

3) Are the fonts I install with Font Management System permanent, and will they still be available when I restart my computer? Answer: Yes. Fonts installed with the Font Management System are permanently installed to your computer, unless you chose to Temporarily Activate the fonts instead. There is no need to restart your computer to start using the fonts you installed, but you may have to close and then reopen any currently running applications (i.e. Microsoft Word) in order to see the newly installed fonts appear. 4) Will Font Management System install OpenType fonts? Answer: Yes. The Font Management System can install and uninstall TrueType, OpenType, and PostScript fonts. 5) Every time I install a new font I see a message saying I shouldn't install more than 500 fonts. Why? Answer: Having too many fonts installed may slow your computer down. Having too many fonts installed will use up precious system resources (memory). Microsoft suggests no more that 1,000 fonts be installed at any given time. We suggest you install no more than 500 fonts at a time. If you install a lot of fonts and you notice your system is slowing down, try removing some fonts.
