Classification: Reference: Date: TF02-009 NTB02-120 December 5, 2002 APPLIED VEHICLES: IF YOU CONFIRM: NISSAN: ESSENTIAL TOOL; J-45741 ABS ACTIVE WHEEL SENSOR CHECKER 2002-2003 Altima (L31) 2002-2003 Maxima (A33) - with A/T ONLY 2001-2003 Xterra (WD22) 2001-2003 Frontier (D22) - 4WD 2003 Frontier (D22) - 2WD 2003 350Z (Z33) An applied vehicle exhibits the following symptoms: Antilock Braking System (ABS) light is ON, CONSULT II shows a DTC code for ABS Wheel Speed Sensor. ACTIONS: Use essential tool J-45741 ABS Wheel Speed Sensor Checker to power up the sensor and perform a component test (see Figure 1). Refer to the Essential Tool Shipment flyer (on pages 5 and 6) for additional information. This special tool is Essential and has been automatically sent to all Nissan dealers. J-45741-2 J-45741-3 J-45741-BOX J-45741-1 J-45741-4 Figure 1 1/6

Your dealership non-vehicle account will be charged $198.00 each, plus applicable taxes and freight. Additional checkers can be ordered from Tech-Mate (1-800-662-2001). Four jumper harnesses are included with J-45741 (see Figure 1 on page 1). An additional harness, J-45741-5, is still in development. NOTE: Active-type wheel speed sensors that are installed in these vehicles cannot be checked with a standard Ohm meter test because the sensor receives power from the ECU and output is digital versus analog. Checking an ABS Active Wheel Sensor: 1. Turn the ignition key OFF. 2. Disconnect the wheel sensor harness connector. Vehicle harness left disconnected. Figure 2 3. Connect the appropriate jumper harness to the wheel sensor connector. NOTE: DO NOT connect the other end of the jumper harness to the vehicle harness. You will get an incorrect reading. 4. Connect the J-45741 Checker Box to the jumper harness test leads. 5. Turn ON the power switch on the J-45741 Checker Box : It is equipped with a 9V battery power supply to use in key off situations. The green LED should remain ON steady. If it does not, replace the 9V battery in the J-45741 Checker Box. 2/6

6. Spin the wheel. Watch the red LED. It should flash ON and OFF, which tells you the sensor is working properly. NOTE: The flash rate will vary with the speed you spin the wheel. You can actually see how the sensor works as the ABS Control Unit sees it. As the car drives faster, the control unit sees the faster signal. If the red LED remains ON steady, reverse the red and black leads that plug into the Checker Box and retest before replacing the sensor. If the red LED remains OFF, verify the vehicle is truly equipped with Active type sensors per the ESM before replacing the sensor. CAUTION: DO NOT back-probe connector pins on the vehicle. The connectors have a water resistant seal that can be damaged if you attempt to probe from the back side of the connector. J-45741 test leads can also be used with CONSULT-II for more in-depth diagnosis (see Figure 3): (FOR EXAMPLE - If the ABS light comes ON intermittently): CONSULT-II black test lead connected to ground. Vehicle harness connected to jumper harness. Figure 3 3/6

1. The jumper harness may be connected between the vehicle harness and the ABS wheel sensor. 2. Connect the CONSULT-II Oscilloscope CH1 or CH2 test lead to the jumper harness instead of the J-45741-BOX. 3. Insert the ignition key into the ignition and turn it to the "ON" position. 4. Set the scope to 0.5 V per Division and 20 MS (Milliseconds) per Division (see Figure 4) 5. Spin the wheel. 6. The wheel sensor output will be displayed as a 0 to 1.5V square wave pattern (see Figure 4). Triggering Menu Set Auto Trigger Start Triggering NOTE: If 9 Volts is displayed, switch the CONSULT-II lead to the other jumper harness lead and re-test. >> [A] 0.5 V/Div 20 ms/div T Figure 4 TP020659 4/6

2002 Nissan EG-130-02-08 The following special service tool has been classified essential by Nissan North America, Inc. 1 2 3 4 J-45741 Active Wheel Speed Sensor Checker Application: Xterra, Frontier, Altima, Maxima, 350Z, Murano Note: This special service tool performs a component test on the ABS wheel sensors on the applicable vehicles. The new active wheel sensors can not be tested with an ohmmeter and must have voltage applied to the sensor for proper diagnosis. This Active Wheel Speed Sensor Checker has its own power supply and will quickly identify faulty wheel speed sensors. The included harnesses can also be used with the CONSULT-II for in-depth analysis. This essential tool will be invoiced to your Nissan Non-Vehicle Account at $198.00 (plus applicable taxes and freight) in accordance with your dealer agreement with Nissan North America, Inc. *Please see page two for tool storage instructions.
