Main-Danube Canal - Runs over a hundred miles from Bamberg past Nuremberg, this engineering triumph, started in the late 1930 s but completed in 1992, raises the Main River through a series of 11 locks over the 1,300+ feet high European continental divide down five locks to the Danube. Moselle The delightful Moselle passes through the Lorraine region of northwest France past famous vineyards and picturesque old towns and a parade of castles and redoubts on through Luxembourg to Germany and meets the Rhine River at Koblenz. The Rhine River. Flows from the Swiss Alps to the North Sea. Lined with castles, vineyards, large and small towns alike such as Basel, Heidelberg, Mannheim and Cologne; this river connects central Europe with Dutch ports such as Amsterdam and Rotterdam. Rhône With a name traced back to Greco-Roman times, the Rhône has a rich history as the primary trade route from the Mediterranean north past vineyards, estates and storied cities such as Arles, Avignon, Viviers, Tournon-sur-Rhône and Lyon to the heart of France to is source in the Swiss Alps. Some cruise routes move to the Saône River at Lyon further north to Chalon-sur-Saône.
