1) Reverse osmosis concept 2 Reverse osmosis (RO) is a water purification technology that uses a semipermeable membrane. This membrane technology is not properly a filtration method. In RO, an applied pressure is used to overcome osmotic pressure, a colligative property that is driven by chemical potential, a thermodynamic parameter. 1.1) Description of Concept 2 (option 1) This concept uses exactly the same system as Reverse osmosis. The seawater gets in the system once pump (1) is on Figure 1. Then the same pump 1, pumps the water in de semipermeable membranes. All undesirable particles stay in the semipermeable membrane Figure 2. The seawater passes through the 3 membranes. 1.2) Description Concept 2(option 2) This option is exactly the same as option 1. In this system, electric pump is replaced by hand pump. The hand pump can produce 10 bar of pressure. The osmoseapparaat is need only 10 bar of pressure to clean the water. Advantages - Produce 190 liters fresh water a day (for few families) - The water is more cleaned than other systems, minimum 99,8 % of salt is reduced - Maintenance is easy (RO membrane is removable). - Easy to mount. - Can produce enough water / hour. - Doesn t electricity - Doesn t need pretreatment Inconveniences - Manual - Hand pump is heavy (42 kg)

1.4) Conclusion Fortunately concept 2 is very simple compared but it is heavy. The pump only weighs 42 kg. The Filters need to be yearly replaced. Gaza doesn t have those filters. The device can be expensive. The pump cost 100 American dollars exclusive shipping cost. The Osmose device cost 50 Euro but need to be maintained at least once a year and that cost a lot of money.
