DEHN + SÖHNE DEHNconductor System No Problems with Proximities

DEHNconductor System - New Possibilities for controling Proximities. For preventing dangerous flashovers among parts of external lightning protection systems and internal conductive parts (electrical installation, conduits, etc.), keeping the separation distance s is an important requirement to be considered when planning and realising a lightning protection system. DEHNconductor System The separation distance has to be calculated according to the normative provisions by DIN V VDE V 0185 Part 3, Main Section 1, Subclause 5.3. Keeping the separation distance s is often a problem for new and existing installations. The innovative HVI conductor of the component range DEHNconductor System offers specifiers and constructors of lightning protection systems new possibilities to realise the keeping of the separation distance and to achieve a higher acceptance from the specifier and the owner of the building.

1 Connection HVI Conductor II with seperate Ring Conductor Structure an Function of HVI Conductor sepearte ring conductor distance holder e.g. Part No. 106 170 distance holder e.g. Part No. 106 820 a 0.5 m HVI -Conductor II connection with Without additional protective measures, high impulse voltages cause flashovers on surfaces of insulating materials. This effect is known as a creeping flashover. If the so-called creepage discharge inception voltage is exceeded, a surface sparkover is initiated that can range over a distance of some metres without problem. area protected against lightning strikes HVI Conductor II EB terminal Part No. 405 020 connection with For avoiding creepage discharges, the new HVI conductor is furnished with a special external coating that allows to direct high lightning impulse voltages to a reference potential. For this purpose, the special external coating is connected with the of the building (free of partial lightning currents) in the area of the unit. This can be performed at e.g. metal, earthed roof superstructures, situated in the protection area of the lightning protection system, at earthed parts of the building construction that is free of lightning currents or at the protective conductor of the low voltage system. Connecting the special coating with parts of the lightning protection system like the air termination or other down conductors, is not permissible. 2 Transistion roof conductor holder Part No. 253 015 + adapter Part No. 253 026 conductor holder Part No. 275 121 conductor holder from HVI Conductor II to the non-isolated down conductor a 0.5 m non-isolated down conductor Avert high Lightning Impulse Voltages The coaxially structured HVI conductor with an outer diameter of 20 consists of a 19 2 copper wire, a thick, high-voltage resistant insulation and a special external weather-resistant coating. For avoiding low-energy flashovers due to capacitive displacement currents, HVI conductor can be connected additionally with the in the course of the wiring. These connections do not have to be capable of carrying lightning currents, as the capacitive displacement currents carry low energies and do not lead to hazardous sparkings. Comprehensive measurements have shown that HVI conductor can be assigned an equivalent separation distance of s = 0.75 m (in air) because of its high voltage resistance. The specification of this equivalent separation distance results in max. cable lengths depending on the protection level of the lightning protection system and the current division coefficient k c. Improving the current division over several down conductors (reduction of k c ), the max. cable lengths can be extended, if a protection level for the structure is provided.

HVI Conductor Product Range The prefabricated HVI conductor I (Fig. 1a) is furnished by the manufacturer with a connection element at the. On the earth side, an earth connection element is provided, which, however can be mounted onto the HVI conductor on site. This earth connection element is premounted on the earth side in delivery condition. Thus the length of HVI conductor I can be shortened on site. It is used for connecting the air termination of the external lightning protection directly with the earth termination system of the building via HVI conductor I. At the end of the an terminal is provided for connection with the. The prefabricated HVI conductor II with two head pieces (Fig. 1b) is furnished by the manufacturer with two adjusted s. Its length cannot be modified. The prefabricated HVI conductor III (Fig. 1c) is furnished by the manufacturer with a fixed unit, consisting of a and a fixed equipotential bonding element. Fig. 1a: HVI Conductor I Part No. 819 020 Fig. 1b: HVI Conductor II Part No. 819 021 element (fixed) HVI conductor with special coating element (fixed) earth connection element (removable) At the end of the conductor a unit itself can be created on site. The necessary components for the second unit (connection element with heatshrinkable sleeve and element) are included loosely in delivery. Thus, the length of HVI conductor III can be shortened at site. HVI conductors II and III are used, e.g. to connect several parts of the installation to be protected with the earth termination system of the building, not individually but together via a separate ring conductor. For sites with especially architectural requirements we recoend to install HVI conductor with an insulating pipe. Characteristic applications would be visually optimised antenna facilities. HVI conductor can be provided as three different types: 1. HVI conductor I with a fixed unit and detachable earth connection element according to Fig. 1a. 2. HVI conductor II with 2 fixed units according to Fig. 1b. 3. HVI conductor III with 1 fixed unit and 1 unit to be installed on site according to Fig 1c. Application of HVI Conductor at Cell Sites Cell sites are often installed on buildings of third parties. Normally, there is an agreement between the operator of the cell site and the owner of the structure, that the installation of the cell site does not lead to any additional risk for the structure. Regarding lightning protection this means especially that partial lightning currents must not enter the building at a lightning strike into the support construction. Partial lightning currents arising inside of the building threaten the electrical and electronic equipment. Fig. 1 illustrates a possible solution for an isolated air termination at an antenna support. The air termination rod has to be fixed at the antenna support construction with an insulating pipe of nonconductive material. The height of the air termination rod depends on the requirement that the support construction and eventually existing electrical installations of the cell site (basis transceiver station / BTS) have to be situated in the protection zone of the air termination rod. Application of HVI Conductor for Protection of Roof Superstructures Metal and electrical roof superstructures overtop the roof level and are therefore exposed points for lightning strikes. Due to conduits and electrical conductors leading into the inside of a building, there is also a risk of vagabonding partial lightning currents. The entering of partial lightning currents into the building is prevented by keeping the required separation distance s over the complete building. This can be controlled easily, if the isolated air termination is connected via HVI conductor (Fig. 1). 1 connecting terminal plate Part No. 301 229 cable tie protection angle according to VDE V 0185 Part 3, Table 3 air termination rod L = 1000 Part No. 101 001 end range connection with of the building KS connector Part No. 301 009 By using HVI conductor, lightning currents can be easily conducted to the earth termination system without having to observe distances to metal and electrical parts.
