2 Getting Started with Cmap Software Codes: CHD = Click-Hold-Drag [Left mouse click-hold it down-drag cursor] CW = Click White [Left mouse click anywhere in white area to clear selections] 1. Sometimes the Cmap software will automatically open to a new workspace. If not, open a new Cmap workspace from the box called Views Cmap Tools. Click on the File drop-down menu at the top of the screen, then on the first choice, New Cmap : 2. From the Cmap workspace screen, you can access Views - Cmap Tools from the dropdown menu at the top of the screen. Click on Show Views : 3. Make two nodes with a link connecting them. a. Double click in white area to create the first node.
3 b. Notice the directions to click and drag arrow to make a link. Make sure the point of your cursor is inside the box with two arrows, then CHD the black arrow out to the right then release the mouse: c. The lavender highlight on the link (on the screen) along with the double-arrow box means that the link has been selected so that you may enter text. Type in the word can be : d. Notice that my link and two nodes are bunched together. To spread them out, click on the right node to select it; then release. Then CHD the right node: e. Then select the link, release the mouse, then CHD the link to reposition can be. Then select the left node, enter Cmap ; then select the right node to enter text. f. Select the node, downloaded for free, then locate your cursor-arrow point inside the double-arrow box, hold and drag the black arrow to make a new link and node. Select the link and enter at ; select the node and enter the text.
4 4. Make two nodes that share a common link. a. Double click three times in white areas to create 3 nodes. Select each one, then CHD to reposition them like this: b. Make a link from Pets to cats and enter include : c. CW, then select include (and release); then place cursor point inside the double arrow box and CHD the cursor point inside the border of the node with the dogs text and release. Reposition links and nodes as needed.
5 5. Select and move a section of nodes and links in Cmap workspace. Sometimes your Cmap workspace gets crowded, but you don t want to have to move nodes and links one at a time. Here s how to select and move a group of connected nodes and links. a. Let s start with a little map of PRM that s out of order: b. To reposition the Read section between Preview & Mark, first select and delete the links between Preview & Mark and between Mark & Read ; then reposition Mark to the right of Read : c. To reposition the Read section, select Read, then hold the Control (Ctrl) key down and select the link for, then each of the two nodes below it. Release the Ctrl key and mouse; then place the cursor in any of the selected objects and CHD them all to a new position, which is centered between Preview & Mark. Then make links between Preview & Read and between Read & Mark.
6 6. Make the arrowhead pattern consistent for the Link-Node Map format. As you build a Cmap, sometimes the links may have no arrows between nodes, as in this sample map : a. To make the arrowheads consistent with link-node map format, first CW and Select All by 1) using a Ctrl-A keystroke on the keyboard, OR 2) going to the drop-down menu under Edit at the top of the screen and clicking on Select All, which is in the fourth box down, OR 3) using the Lasso CW, then CHD moving your cursor from left-to-right to lasso the text you want to select.
7 b. Your Styles palette is a small box in your workspace. If it s not there, then go to the Window drop-down menu and click on Show Styles Palette : c. On the Styles palette, click on Line (the lower arrow points to it in the row of 4 tabs). d. Then click on the 2 nd diagram from-the-left under Arrowheads (the upper arrow points to it). Now, your map should have a consistent arrow pattern! 7. Save a Cmap file. Use either the Ctrl-S keystroke OR the drop-down menu called File. 1: Give your file a name. 2: This file Name will be shown in Views - Cmap Tools (on the Window menu) 3: Cmap files are saved in a folder called My Cmaps (in My Documents on a PC).
8 8. Print your Cmap. Click on the File drop-down menu and select Print Preview : a. For larger type, you may want to click on Landscape under Orientation. Select the Print command, select the correct printer, and click on Ok.
9 9. Transferring Your Cmap file to a flash drive. The Save As command WILL NOT ALLOW YOU to transfer a Cmap file to a flash drive or other portable drive. a. 10. Transferring a Cmap file from a flash drive to the Cmaps program a. Go to Views CmapTools and select Add Resources. b. Then Browse to find your flash drive, and select the file that you want to transfer. Select the file and click on Add. c. Edit Resource Properties box appears with your Cmap file on the line called Resource Name. Click OK.. (See next page.)
10 Transferring Cmap files I haven t found any other ways, except the ones listed below, to transfer Cmap files from one computer to another. I ve used these directions with a PC, but haven t been able to try them out with a Mac. Jamie Armstrong To transfer Cmap Files with portable storage drive 1. Open your flash drive or other portable storage drive so that the folder where you want to save your Cmap is visible. (Use the Restore Down button next to the X in the upper right corner of your screen so that you view your flash drive folder and the Cmap file at the same time on the screen.) 2. Save your Cmap file. 3. If the box Views CmapTools isn t already open, then go to Window on the dropdown menu, then click on Views CmapTools. ( Restore Down or close your Cmap diagram, leaving the Views box on your screen.) 4. In the Views box, highlight the file you want to transfer, then right click, hold, drag and drop the file onto your flash drive. 5. Close everything out. Safely remove your flash drive.
11 6. Open the IHMC CmapTools program on the computer where you want to transfer a Cmap from your flash drive. 7. If the Views box isn t open, go to the dropdown menu Window and open Views CmapTools. 8. Then follow steps 10-12 below (in To transfer Cmap Files via email attachment) To transfer Cmap Files via email attachment 1. Save your Cmap file. 2. Access your email account on the same computer where the Cmap file is located. 3. Attach the Cmap file. You ll find it in a folder called My Cmaps, which the IHMC Cmap software creates either in My Documents or possibly on the desktop. 4. Send the email with the attached Cmap file. 5. Open your email on the computer where you want to transfer your Cmap file. 6. Download the Cmap file onto your Desktop (or another location on your computer). 7. Open the IHMC Cmap program. 8. Go to Window on the dropdown menu. 9. Click on Views CmapTools. 10. Left mouse-click on the Cmap file you want to transfer, then hold, drag, and drop the file into the box called Views CmapTools. You may also select the Add Resources command under File drop-down menu in Views Cmap Tools. SEE THE NEXT PAGE FOR A SCREEN CAPTURE OF THIS BOX. 11. After you click on Add Resources (or drag and drop the icon for your Cmap file into the Views box), a box will appear on your screen called Edit Resource Properties with your Cmap file on the line called Resource Name. Click OK at the bottom of the box.
12. Your Cmap file now will appear in Views Cmap Tools. Double-click to open it (OR in Views Cmap Tools, select the file you want to open, then go to File on the dropdown menu, and click on Open ). That s it!!!! 12
