Introduction Team Danmark s primary mission is to develop Danish elite sport in a socially and community appropriate manner. Parliament has established Team Danmark s overall tasks in the Act on elite sport. The first act on elite sport was passed in parliament in 1984, which also created Team Danmark. The act on elite sport was renewed in 2004. In 2010, we will work with the 31 Federations, which together will receive the majority of the allocated 135 million kroner that Team Danmark annually invests in elite sport. Our revenues come primarily from the Ministry of Culture, Denmark s Sports Federation, as well as the sale of television, sponsorship, and marketing rights that Sport One Danmark stands for. Team Danmark s organisation is comprised of a director and 6 teams. The director refers to the board of members, which is Team Danmark s highest authority. The board has 8 members, all appointed by the Minister for Culture. 4 members are chosen by The National Olympic Committee and Sport Confederations of Denmark and 4 are chosen by the Minister for Culture. Both Athletes and elite-trainers are represented in the board. Team Danmark supports more than 1000 athletes. Our goal is that we, together with the federations, create an optimal environment for the athletes daily life. This booklet is written for the supported athletes, and it gives an introduction to our work and priorities in the period 2009 to 2012, just as it gives a brief introduction to our network of resource managers and experts. Michael Andersen Director of Team Danmark 3
the nine focus areas Team Danmark focuses on nine key areas, which are all essential when it comes to development of the individual athlete and the team as a whole. It is about financial support for your federation s training and competition activities, support for talent development, improved training facilities, development of your federation s organisation and management, cooperation with Elite Municipalities, research in elite sport, sports science assistance, employment and education, and overall communication. In this booklet, we focus sharply on the areas you have the opportunity to access as an athlete. These include: physical training, sports psychology, sports medicine and physiotherapy, sports nutrition and testing. You can read about what we offer you in terms of employment and education, and you can also learn more about our offers regarding media attention and communication. The primary focal point for Team Danmark and the Federations work with elite athletes is a Working Group where your sports manager, coach, and your Team Danmark consultant will determine performance and development objectives, activity plans and budgets for each season. Another function of the Working Group is to discuss and establish each athlete s sporting level, potential and thus support level. Some Federations also have an athlete representative within the Working Group. If you have questions regarding the cooperation with Team Danmark, you can contact either your coach, sports manager or your Team Danmark consultant. 4
WHO are TEaM DANMARK S EXPERT SERVICES available to? To ensure that athletes with an international perspective receive the best service, Team Danmark s supported athletes are divided into three categories: Team Danmark Athletes, Elite Athletes and World Class Athletes. Your athletic performance and your Federation s prioritisation within Team Danmark, determine which category you are placed in, and hence which expert services are available to you. Your category placement is shown on the Team Danmark card you received with this booklet. Team Danmark Athletes are athletes who are outside or in the periphery of the senior national team - or in other Team Danmark-supported fractions. The Team Danmark Athlete has the right to use offers regarding employment and education, college accommodation, canteen meals, strength and conditioning facilities, and fitness dk membership. Athletes in this category do not have direct access to the Team Danmark expert system. However, you may be eligible to receive temporary expert assistance for a certain period of time, based on an individual assessment conducted by your coach, sports manager, and Team Danmark s consultant. Elite Athletes are the highest priority senior national team athletes. As Elite athlete, you have priority access to Team Danmark s expert system and access to all other offered services. For example: employment and education, college accommodation, canteen meals, strength and conditioning facilities and more. World Class Athletes Team Danmark wishes to acknowledge and highlight these Danish athletes, and we therefore place them in the special group of World Class Athletes. World Class Athletes are, in principle, athletes and teams who have achieved top-8 positions in the past World Cup or Olympics. World Class Athletes have a high priority, and unlike other Elite athletes get the opportunity to participate in special seminars and Team Danmark events. There are currently around 1,000 Team Danmark supported athletes. 5
Team Danmark sports physiologists and physical trainers are great at refining my weight training, my conditioning and my agility training in preparation for the European Championships, World Championships and Olympics. individual input is extremely important and ensures that my physical training can vary, so it is balances my handball training during these very intense training periods. 6 Kasper Nielsen, European champion 2008, handball
Physical training What is physically required to dominate within your sport? This is the target phrase that Team Danmark physical trainers, sports physiologists and affiliated ad hoc experts aim towards, in order to give you the best chance to reach the absolute elite level in your sport. Our experts analyse which physical qualities your sport requires of you. The work is conducted in close interaction with other Team Danmark experts, so we can focus on achieving the best results - in your daily training, in training camps, and when it really counts - in competitions. We have assigned physical trainers in Brøndby and Århus, as well as a large network of other physical trainers to give you the best help possible when you train. The experts will guide you, coach you, and evaluate your training in conjunction with your trainer. Selected athletes may also be included in an individual training program, where our experts create a detailed and precise training program with specific objectives. The objectives are set in relation to your overall annual plan, and being in peak form for major competitions. Our physical trainers also help to spread knowledge about physical training at seminars and national team meetings. The goal is to enhance knowledge in the field and constantly be at the forefront of development. We wish to help ensure that you have the best opportunities to perform optimally, every time you compete at major international championships. You can read more at teamdanmark.dk under Training. 7
I work primarily with keeping the focus on daily workouts and try to keep in mind, that my expectations toward the big tournaments remove the focus from what it s all about that is, the flow of the game, and the certainty that I have what it takes to beat everyone. 8 Michael Maze, European champion 2009
Sports Psychology Sport psychology plays a key role in both training and competition situations. To achieve strong mental skills at a high international level, you need mental training as intensively as you need physical and technical training. Team Danmark has assigned three Danish and one international expert to develop the sport psychology area with you as the central focus. The sport psychology consultants will help you with performance-focused and practical sports psychology. They work to optimise and train your mental skills, but also focus on all areas of your overall life, so you can achieve the best in all aspects of life, as well as your life as an elite athlete. The sport psychology team work on an individual level, where you can take part in planned individual conversations, as well as training your sports psychology skills based on your specific needs. The team also helps your Federation and your coach to develop sport-specific mental training exercises for use in your daily training. In this way the whole team around you are prepared for the task ahead. At Team Danmark, we are also aware of sport s dark sides, so if you encounter problems in other areas outside the sports field, it is important that you come to us. We work from the holistic idea of The Whole Athlete and are prepared and competent to help outside the sports arena. You can read more at teamdanmark.dk under Sport Psychology. 9
Injuries unfortunately go hand in hand with elite sport, so it is important that there are talented people who can step in to help. if an accident occurs, it is essential that doctors and physiotherapists make a coordinatated effort. And when first back on the field, you should aim to prevent, prevent and prevent - and listen to your body. 10 Tine baun, european gold for teams in 2009 and number one in the world in 2008
sports medicine and physiotherapy At Team Danmark, we believe that it is equally as important to prevent injuries, as to treat them. Therefore our doctors and physiotherapists implement injury prevention screenings, which ultimately reduce the number of injuries and improve your chances of achieving top results. If an accident does occur, and you are injured, the sports medicine team will gather to provide an individual treatment and rehabilitation program, where the goal is to facilitate your healing, reduce your pain and swelling, and increase your mobility and strength. Sports clinics in Århus and Brøndby cooperate closely with the dieticians and the rest of Team Danmark s experts. To assist in your recovery, you are placed in a cycle of injury treatment and rehabilitation, while at the same time having your diet and nutrition addressed. As an athlete you can actively use the team by getting advice and treatment early on in the injury rehabilitation, or in your competition preparation. This will ensure so you come out quicker on the other side, or avoid injuries altogether. In some cases treatment will require only a couple of consultations, and other times daily treatment may be required. Our doctors and physiotherapists also offer a three hour course in basic sports injury treatment and prevention, which includes theoretical knowledge and practical advice. Team Danmark has personal injury insurance which covers medical emergencies affecting Team Danmark-supported athletes in Team Danmark-supported training activities. The insurance covers both home and abroad. Contact your Team Danmark consultant if you are unfortunate enough to have an accident - i.e. a sudden event causing personal injury. Team Danmark s sports medicine team also has a sports clinic in Brøndby, where the sub-elites can buy treatment and receive advice from doctors and physiotherapists, which service the country s best athletes on a daily basis. As an athlete you are naturally always thinking about what you eat. But because I simply didn t know better, I ve eaten badly for many years. a more constant blood sugar level is reflected in the brain. I feel that I am thinking clearer, have more endurance, and more energy. 12 Alberte Holm Lindberg, European championships - Bronze 2009
Sports Nutrition The timing and content of what you eat and drink are very important for your performance. Elite exercises expose your body to large loads on a daily basis - therefore it is important that your body has the opportunity to repair muscle cells and replenish energy stores after each training session. Team Danmark dieticians can advise you on how to tailor your diet to your specific nutrient requirements. As a new Team Danmark supported athlete, it is compulsory that you participate in a basic course in sports nutrition, where dieticians will teach you and other top athletes about general sports nutrition. During the course you will receive various educational materials with written take home information and dietary guidelines. Once you ve completed the basic course, you have the opportunity to receive individual guidance from our dieticians. For individual and sport specific guidance dieticians investigate your training situation, your diet, your age, your gender, your weight and your body composition. Some may need to increase their weight, and others may need to lose weight or change their body composition. Based on the results, you and the dieticians, in conjunction with your trainer, will set specific goals and time frames for your nutrition process. You can read more at teamdanmark.dk under Nutrition. 13
leading up to the Olympics in Beijing, I was tested on countless occasions - it was almost too much. But the repeated testing in the pool gave a good overview as to whether my form and development were headed in the right direction. It is nice to be able to follow your own development and the knowledge that the training will bear fruit. and if something does not work, then the test results make it possible to stop and correct things. 14 Lotte Friis, World Cup and European championship gold, 800m freestyle in 2009 and a new world record for 1,500 m
Test Knowledge and tests provide direction. And to maximize your ability to deliver, we test the country s best athletes at our two test centres in Brøndby and Odense. Our Testing Centres also have a mobile unit and portable equipment, which allow us to test when you are at home and around the world on training paths. In short, wherever it suits you best. Testing requires an accurate knowledge of the specific physical demands of each sport, in order to select the most appropriate test forms. Therefore our experts have a wide variety of test methods that accurately assess the effectiveness of your training program. This can for example, be measuring your oxygen intake, measurement your muscle function, or an analysis of your technique. You can use the results to optimize your physical fitness and strength and assess and adjust your training in relation to your sport with the help of Danish and international experts and your trainer. We use the assessment to find the strengths and weaknesses in your physical profile, so you have set targets and directions, when you train and compete. Our test work is carried out in close cooperation with national trainers, researchers, and other experts in the field, so the latest knowledge is always available. You can read more at teamdanmark.dk under Testing. 15
It is important that I have great flexibility in my studies and can move some subjects around to suit. Flexibility is key for me. and so it s also been good that I have received additional Study support - it makes everything a little easier. 16 Sophie Fjellvang-Sølling, skier, Olympic participant and dental student at the University of Copenhagen
Education For Team Danmark, it is essential that education and career go hand in hand with your athletic development. We are fighting for gold with you at the world sports arenas, but we also aim to help you with an exciting career when you finally decide to call it a day. We offer flexible learning opportunities to give you more time for your sport. For example, you can receive additional training/lections, receive help in moving your exams, but also help with extending the duration of your studies. Team Danmark helps you to extend your youth education. During secondary education, it is possible to prolong your education by a year, by choosing a 4-year course of STX, HHX and HTX or an individually organised 3-year course of HF. If you choose a career oriented education, you have the opportunity to extend both the practical and the school part of the course. You can read more about our specific offers in the booklet Youth Education and Elite Sport 2010/11. If you are undertaking higher education you can even extend it, in principle, although if it extends more than one year beyond the normal specified time, this will usually result in a stoppage of your Study Support. However as an elite athlete competing at a high international level, you have the opportunity to request additional Study Support from us. You can read more at teamdanmark.dk under Careers & training 17
I finished my studies last year - and if i hadn t found work related to my studies, my education would have been wasted. With 25 hours work per week, I build up my skills and seniority, which I will use one day when my elite career is over. 18 Henriette Engel Hansen, masters of finance. Consultant at the Danish Pharmaceutical Association and bronze winner at the 2009 European Championships in 1000 single kayak
Flexible employment When training fills up your daily calendar, it can be difficult to get a foothold into the labour market. Therefore we cooperate with a number of companies that offer jobs with flexible conditions. Our main sponsor is relief and recruitment office Adecco, who offer you jobs that match your elite career. Adecco conduct thorough interviews and tests based on your education, skills, practical experience, and job wishes. That way, you not only clarify your own options, but you also come to understand yourself better in different job situations. Nykredit in Copenhagen offers the potential to get a job in their customer contact department, where your working hours are reduced to 20-25 hours per week. Coop Danmark also offers you the opportunity to get a flexible job in one of their store chains. At Den Blå Avis in Århus, you can get a foot in the door within the sales department, such as being responsible for making contact with new private and business customers. Flexibility is essential in your everyday life, and our various offers are by no means obligatory. If we don t have the right set-up for you, we can work with various partners to try to develop and create a flexible system that suits you. In addition, we have established a new golden network, which consists of a wide range of companies, offering world-class athletes flexible jobs. In 2010 we also launched a new development programme in cooperation with Enso Consult called - Winner For Life - which will help make the transition from sports to a new life more successful. You can read more about our many opportunities at teamdanmark.dk, Jobs and Training or contact our area consultant. 19
as an athlete it is important to make a name for yourself in the media in order to enhance your future possiblilities. it is also very important in relation to your future civilian career. similarly it is good to find some personal contacts in the media. this usually ensures a better quality of coverage of you. My advice is that you must see the press as your friend - not your enemy! they Basically wish you no harm only well - and with positive attention often comes recognition - and this means more opportunities for sponsorships. 20 Rasmus Henning, tri-athlete, European champion in 2009, long distance
Press and communication The relationship with the media and the press is an essential part of modern professional sport. The media, sports-interested Danes, potential sponsors, and other relevant audiences are all interested in an insight into your daily life and results. It is therefore important that you and your Federation are well prepared to handle and service the press. The Team Danmark communications team advise the Federations and athletes on press and communications matters. It can be both long term and strategic work e.g., preparation of communications or media strategies. However, it may also be in daily contact with the press, where in close cooperation with Federation profiles, we select athletes who have distinguished themselves highly on the international scene and organise articles and media coverage. We may also coordinate with coaches, managers and Federations, who have news they want conveyed to the general public. We publish the magazine Puls along with an editorial team composed of Team Danmark athletes. The magazine lands in the mailbox of all Team Danmark-supported athletes, coaches, and decision makers in the Danish elite landscape. The magazine focuses on your life as athlete, profiles Team Danmark-athletes, and provides access to knowledge-sharing across the various federations and disciplines. If you need assistance with your press and communications, or have a desire to draw on our resources, do not hesitate to contact the communications team. 21

Federation categories There are currently 31 Federations which are placed into three different categories: Elite Federations, Individual Elite, and Development Projects. The Elite Federations have several athletes at international level and a tradition of continuously developing elite performers to the highest international level. For individual sports the key of this category is that athletes have the potential to achieve medals at European Championships, World Championships, and the Olympic Games during the funding period 2009-2012. As a minimum, team sports must have the potential to qualify for the highest international grouping (World Championships/Olympics) during the funding period 2009-2012. The Individual Elite are Federations associated with few or individual athletes at international level. To be placed in this category, athletes must have the potential to achieve medals at International Championships (European Championship, World Cups and the Olympics) during the funding period 2009-2012. Development Projects are Federations where special projects are developed to achieve a performance level that meets the criteria for inclusion in the Elite federation or Individual Elite within a 4-year period. facts and key partners Support for the Federations varies greatly. Some Federations receive 10 million Danish kroner in annual subsidies, while others receive just less than 100,000 kroner each year. Your Federation is assessed by Team Danmark, and begins with a Discipline Analysis which focuses on eight different categories: Federation organisation, international sporting factors, national sporting factors, talent recruitment and development, social conditions for athletes, organisational and managerial factors in elite work, economic and commercial factors, and finally facilities and equipment. Team Danmark s organisation Team Danmark s organisation is comprised of a director and 6 teams. The director refers to the board of members, which is Team Danmark s highest authority. Each of the 6 teams have work areas that directly relate to Team Danmark s core functions, as outlined in the Act on Elite Sport and the Framework Agreement with the Ministry of Culture. Each team has a team leader, who is the directors reference person. The 6 teams: Sportsteam Sports Medicine Sports Physiology Communication and documentation Elite Municipalities and Facilities Sports Psychology 30

Key partners The Active Committee is the vocal representative of Team Danmark athletes and the Danish Sports Federation. The Committee consists of 10 members who advise Team Danmark and the Danish Sports Federation on the development of Danish elite sport. Members are elected for 4 year periods and include both Olympic and non-olympic athletes. The Committee s current members are: Victor Feddersen (rowing), President, Poul-Erik Høyer (badminton), Vice-President, Camilla Andersen (handball), Mads Kruse-Andersen (rowing), Dorthe Dahl (orienteering), Christina Scherwin (athletics), Adam Spliid (kayak), Mette Jacobsen (swimming), Christian Birk (athletics), Rikke Rønholdt (athletics), Cecilie Mayer (squash), substitute, Stephan Mølvig (rowing), substitute. Sport One Danmark generates funds for the Danish elite. Sport One Danmark is Team Danmark and Danmark Sports Federation s joint marketing company, which has a product package that contains products such as Team Danmark main sponsorships, Olympic products, sale of television rights and HR events. As the umbrella organisation for 60 special Federations, Danmark s Sports Federation greatly influences the environment your federation operates in. Four members of Danmark s Sports Federation are also appointed to Team Danmark s board of directors. Team Danmark conducts daily dialogues with Danmark s Sports Federation, including areas such as communication, leadership, and the Olympic Games. Danmark s Sports Federation has an Olympic Committee that is formally responsible for the Danish Olympic team. Here again, there is close collaboration between Team Danmark and Danmark s Sports Federation. During the Olympics, it is Team Danmark s doctors, physiotherapists and masseurs, who constitute a substantial part of the team. Furthermore, the deputy Chef de Mission is a Team Danmark representative. In the lead up to and during the Olympics, the two organisations collaborate on the following - profiling and the exposure of Danish athletes, selection criteria, as well as a series of Olympics-seminars to optimally prepare the Danish Olympic team for the Games. 32
The Ministry of Culture provides the overall framework of Team Danmark. It is namely the parliament, which nominates legislatures of elite sport. Team Danmark also has a framework agreement with the Ministry of Culture, which contains the overall goals for the next four-year period. Ministry of Culture also appoints four members to Team Danmark s board - including the chairman. Since 2000, drug-testing and associated work has been organised by the independent organisation Anti-Doping Danmark. Team Danmark contributes to the funding of Anti-Doping Danmark, but it is only Anti-Doping Denmark s responsibility to inspect and inform about activities in relation to the doping area. It is clearly a prerequisite that Team Danmark cooperates with its athletes to ensure they comply with the applicable rules in the doping area. 33
