Don't think that a career in sports field is only that of sweating it out on the play field. There are many lucrative and well paying technical as well as other jobs beckoning sports people today. The physical education professionals are human engineer or human architect. We make the human body and we shape the human body through planned physical training. So physical education profession provide lot of opportunity to the students but the awareness is required. INTRODUCTION Physical education has been one of the constituent parts of the education system in India. In fact, India has an ancient tradition of physical education and sports (such as kho-kho and kabbadi), to ensure physical development of a person. Physical education mainly focuses on the development of physical and mental fitness, development of neuromuscular skills, and development of character and personality. Prior to the late 1960s, physical education professional preparation programs in the United States were principally concerned with preparing coaches of sport and teachers of physical education. In recent decades, the field has spawned a number of viable alternative career tracks. Beginning in 1966 with but a single master's program established at Ohio University, the field has expanded to 193 institutions that prepare sport managers and administrators on the undergraduate and/or graduate levels (NASSM/NASPE, 1993). The narrow sense of the sport, known as "Little Sport." It is an integral part of education is through physical activity and other auxiliary means of a purposeful, planned, organized educational process. By 408
2 profession we are not only a physical instructor. Out of this we are human engineer or human architect. Physical education teachers are usually employed to teach children from the kindergarten level through high school. Physical education teachers are responsible for promoting physical activity and well-being through a variety of physical activities and sports. Physical education teachers may also serve as coaches for schools' sports teams or serve as health teachers in addition to their physical education duties. They must be physically fit, as most of their typical days are spent on one's feet, and an overall knowledge of sporting and physical activity equipment is necessary. Physical education teachers must develop lesson plans and prepare props and equipment just as any other teacher would. They must assure that their lesson plans are appropriate and effective for all students. Sport management involves any combination of skills related to planning, organizing, directing, controlling, budgeting, leading, and evaluating within the context of an organization or department whose primary product or service is related to sport or physical activity (DeSensi, Kelley, Blanton and Beitel, 20003). Sport managers carry out these skills in a variety of organizational settings (for example): college sports; professional sports; amateur sports (Olympics); sport marketing and management firms; sport communications and news media firms; corporate sponsorship and advertising firms; sporting goods firms; arenas, stadium, and civic centers; community recreation sports programs; social service agency sports programs (YMCA, YWCA, JCC); private club sports programs; and military sports programs. According to Park house (2005), the most recent research on the economic impact of sport identifies it as a $213 billion-a-year industry, making it the sixth largest industry in the United States ( The answer is, Sports Business Journal, p.23, December 1999). The wide range of organizational settings where sports occur means that individuals can select and pursue careers in the kind of work environment of their choice and for which they are best suited (public/private organization; profit/non-profit organization; professional/amateur sports; There are also numerous career paths available in sports administration through which you can explore your sporting abilities and inspire other people and drive them to new heights of excellence and success in sports. If one wants to excel in the profession of sports administration, he/she should possess a natural passion for sports, along with a clear view on how to manage sporting events. As a sports administrator, one can expect working 409
