Paint and Stain Suggestions For Acorn Homes and Deck Houses GENERAL OVERVIEW: The application of exterior and interior inishes is crucial to the appearance and durability of your Acorn or Deck House. The following information represents a suggested guide for painting and staining your home. These suggestions are based on the wide experiences of builders and painters, information provided by suppliers and manufactures, trade magazines, and testing labs. Site conditions and local climatic conditions may dictate additional protection beyond what is suggested within these guidelines. Consult with a local paint professional and supplier when making inal product selections. This guideline does not recommend the use of speci ic manufacturers products unless; A. Acorn Deck House Company believes a particular product will provide superior performance to other alternatives, B. A speci ic product must be used to maintain a materials warranty, or C. A material that has been supplied pre inished by Acorn Deck House Company with a speci ic manufacturer s product. Top quality paint and stain should always be used. Quality materials will be easier to apply, will have superior coverage characteristics, produce a more uniform color and sheen, and keep unsightly mildew in check. Quality coatings have a longer service life and will ultimately save the homeowner thousands of dollars in the form of lower maintenance costs. In general, the more expensive the product the better the product will perform. Higher priced products contain a greater percentage of better quality ingredients. For those products where we do not provide the name of a speci ic manufacturer, we suggest you consult with your painting contractor and/or a knowledgeable paint supplier to assist in product selections. Some manufacturers of quality coating products are: Benjamin Moore 201-573-9600 www.benjaminmoore.com Cabot 800-877-8246 www.cabotstain.com PPG (Olympic) 800-441-9695 www.ppgaf.com Akzo Nobel (Sikkens) 800-833-7288 Performance Coating, Inc (Peno in) 800-736-6346 www.peno in.com Notes on Peno in: this is a relatively new product to us but it looks promising for uses on cedar and mahogany. They offer interior and exterior products that are penetrating, oil-based inishes. They have an exterior product called Peno in for Exterior Hardwoods that is made speci ically for woods like mahogany. They are relatively easy to apply and they do not create a surface ilm that can peel. Within this report, two coats of inish are suggested. Two coats are typically required the irst time a material is covered, but future maintenance may only require 1 coat. The nature of the material, the quality of the coating, the manner in which a coating is applied, the quality of the application equipment, and the color of coating will determine how many coats will be required to adequately cover a material. Exterior wood surfaces, including window frames and doors, must be treated on a regular basis. Examine your house annually and recoat all exposed wood as required, before any deterioration occurs. In extreme conditions, where materials are exposed to excessive sunlight or salt air and spray, wood may need to be treated more often 10/06/10
Paint and Stain Suggestions For Acorn Homes and Deck Houses continued... than is suggested in this report. Stains may look to be in good condition even after they have stopped protecting the wood. Water should bead and run off, not soak into a stain that is in good condition. APPLICATION SUGGESTIONS: In addition to the information on the following sheets, we offer these suggestions that will provide better protection and a better inish for your investment: Generally, solid body or opaque stains will protect wood considerably longer than semi-transparent or transparent stains. The more pigment and resin found in a product the better the product will protect the surface from moisture and damaging UV rays. (See stain de inition on page 4) windows, exterior doors, and sliding glass doors should be sealed from the weather immediately upon receipt. All 6 sides should be sealed to prevent warping and/or swelling. Removal of all door and window hardware, as well as removing the sliding panel of a sliding glass door, is required to treat all surfaces. Because many exterior products contain potentially harmful fungicides, use of these products should be restricted to outside surfaces, inside surfaces should be treated with products approved for interior use. Like exterior doors, interior wood doors should be sealed on all 6 sides to prevent warping and/or swelling. Many of the Acorn and Deck House exterior siding options are graded to the textured or rough face of the material. This means the siding material supplied meets an industry speci ication standard on its textured face and it is our intention that the siding will be installed with its textured side exposed. Regardless of whether a siding is graded to its textured face or not, we suggest all siding be installed rough side out as this greatly improves a sidings ability to hold a stain and often doubles the service life of an exterior treatment. Should the customers choose to install siding with the smooth side exposed, surface preparation is recommended to remove Mill Glaze. A glossy polish, Mill Glaze, can occur after the siding is run through the high-speed planers that make the material smooth. The Mill Glaze can be removed by sanding the surface with 400 grit sandpaper or by applying Mill Glaze Away, a product available at your local paint store. For exterior materials we strongly recommend backpriming (priming the unexposed surface of a material) before it is installed. Coating the cut ends of a material, such as siding, decking, and trim, before installation is also strongly recommended. Uncoated end grain can be the main entry point for water intrusion. Moisture entering wood will cause coatings to fail and cause materials to decay. The wood must be thoroughly dry before coating, particularly with the use of alkyd/oil products. For exterior surfaces, including pressure treated wood, materials should be allowed to dry for 2 to 3 weeks prior to coating; a moisture content below 19% is desirable. Exterior surfaces should never be left uncoated for more than 3 months; over-exposed unprotected wood will experience surface damage that will severely reduce the ability of an applied coating to adhere to a wood surface and lead to premature coating failure. The surface to be treated must be clean. Cleaning solutions to remove dirt, mildew and other pollutants are readily available at your local paint store. Oxalic acid can be used to clean water and rust stained surfaces. These stains can often appear on clear cedar siding, un inished beams, mahogany windows and doors, and other uncoated wood. Always follow the manufacturer s recommendations on the paint or stain can. Paint or stain a small sample area prior to inishing an entire area to make sure the color is desirable and correct. Brush application is superior to roller or sprayer because of better penetration. Spraying with immediate back-brushing can also produce a good inish. Do not apply too much paint or stain to a surface. This is particularly important with stain that needs to penetrate a surface. Over application will cause a ilm to form, which over time will peel or crack. 10/06/10
Paint and Stain Suggestions For Acorn Homes and Deck Houses continued... The owner and paint contractor should keep a record of inal paint and stain selections. This will insure that the appropriate materials are used when recoating. While we believe the suggestions found in this report are sound and that our sources are reliable, site conditions, the changing state of the art, and the fact that we are relying on the reports of others, requires that Acorn Deck House Company disclaim any warranty related to the matters set forth by these suggestions. Accordingly, no reader may seek redress from Acorn Deck House Company because he or she purported to rely on this paper to his or her disadvantage. DEFINITIONS: ACRYLIC - A synthetic resin, plastic, used in latex coatings. ALKYD A synthetic resin used in oil based coatings. LATEX Is the resin found in water based coatings. MILDEWCIDE - An additive that retards or prevents the growth of mildew, algae and fungus on painted or stained surfaces. MILL-GLAZE The smooth, glossy inish that appears on some wood as a result of the high speed milling process. Mill-Glaze must be removed prior to painting or staining to insure proper adhesion or penetration. PAINT A ilm forming inish. POLYURETHANE An alkyd/oil based clear inish that provides a hard, durable inish, on un inished or stained interior wood. Some manufactures also produce an acrylic PRIMER The irst coat that gets applied to a material. Primers keep stains and tannins from bleeding through woods, they seal porous materials and promote a better bond between the material and the topcoat. Primers are also used when making dramatic color changes and the previous color needs to be hidden. RESIN A natural or synthetic material that is the main ingredient in paint and stain and binds the other ingredients together. Aids in the adhesion to the coated surface. SOLVENT The volatile parts of paint or stain that evaporate during drying, water or oil. SPAR VARNISH An oil based clear inish that should be used only on exterior surfaces. Varnishes tend to yellow with age. SHEEN The degree of lustre or shininess of a dried paint ilm. GLOSS The shiniest inish, having the highest light re lective quality. Because these paints have a high re lective quality, they highlight surface imperfections. Gloss paints are the most durable and the easiest to clean, they are ideal for areas of heavy use. Higher gloss paints are a good choice for bathroom and kitchen walls, interior doors, windows and trim. SEMI-GLOSS Slightly less shiny than a gloss. EGGSHELL, LOW LUSTRE, or SATIN Slightly less shiny than a Semi-Gloss but more lustrous than a Flat. FLAT Practically free of shine, lat paint will absorb the light that falls on it. Because these paints do not re lect light, they conceal surface imperfections such as those that can occur on drywalled or plastered surfaces. Flat paints have a porous surface that can trap dirt and may make cleaning dif icult. Flat paints are ideal for ceilings and walls (with the exception of bathrooms and kitchen walls). STAIN a penetrating inish that allows a wood s character to show through. Exterior stains will protect a wood, while interior stains have very little protective qualities and are used solely as a pigment. The descriptions below refer to exterior stains. SOLID BODY or OPAQUE Allows the texture but little of the grain to be seen. Solids protect the wood the longest because they block out a greater portion of the Sun s ultraviolet rays. Depending on site conditions and how the initial coating was applied, the irst recoat of a solid will be necessary 3-4 years after the irst application, future recoats can wait 6-7 years. 10/06/10
Paint and Stain Suggestions For Acorn Homes and Deck Houses continued... SEMI-TRANSPARENT Allows the texture and some of the grain of a wood to show through while still adding pigment and changing the color. Depending on site conditions and how the initial coating was applied, Semi-Transparent stains will require recoating every 1 1/2 2 years for horizontal surfaces and 2-3 years on vertical surfaces. TRANSPARENT or CLEAR Allows the texture, grain, and the natural look of wood to show through with very little color change. Use of Clears will require frequent recoating. Depending on site conditions and how the initial coating was applied, Clear stain will require recoating every year for horizontal surfaces and 1 1/2-2 years on vertical surfaces. WET ON WET APPLICATION Applying a second coat of inish while the irst coat is still wet. Often recommended with clear inishes. VOLATILE ORGANIC COMPOUNDS (VOCs) - Carbon-base liquid solvents, such as turpentine, alcohol, xylene, and various petrochemicals that evaporate rapidly as paint dries. Oil based paints need VOCs to keep them in liquid form until they are applied. Water based paints also contain a much smaller amount of VOCs.
