Message from the President Welcome to SIM University (UniSIM)! You are joining Singapore s only privately-funded university dedicated to adult learners, with a unique place in the university landscape in Singapore. Together with the full-time staff in UniSIM, you contribute to an important role of supporting Singapore s economic growth by providing skills and knowledge upgrading pathways for working adults. You not only help these adult learners realise their aspirations for a university education, but also in fostering a spirit of continuing education and valuable opportunities for networking. Academic Cluster The Academic Cluster formulates, implements and reviews academic policies and programmes, with an eye on quality, timeliness, and sustainability. The Provost oversees the activities and initiatives of the four Schools as well as the Office of Graduate Studies and the Centre for Applied Research. Professor Tsui Kai Chong, Provost The School of Arts and Social Sciences (SASS) offers a diverse range of programmes that deepens students understanding and appreciation of languages and literature, social sciences, and translation. Associate Professor Genice Ngg, Dean, SASS The School of Business (SBIZ) offers business and management programmes that provide our graduates with the knowledge and skills to be effective leaders and competent decision-makers. Associate Professor Lee Pui Mun, Dean, SBIZ The School of Human Development and Social Services (HDSS) offers programmes such as counselling, social work, human resource management, early childhood education, gerontology, amongst others, to meet the needs of the social services and corporate sectors. Administrative Cluster The Administrative Cluster formulates, implements, and reviews the policies, processes and procedures, providing effective and efficient support services. The Registrar oversees three offices: Office of Admissions, Office of Academic Services, and Office of Student and Alumni Relations. Associate Professor Yip Woon Kwong, Registrar Office of Admissions (OA) The Office of Admissions is charged with promoting the university s undergraduate programmes, including recruitment, admission and management of student awards. Serene Lim, Director, OA The departments under its purview are: Student Recruitment Department (SRC) The Student Recruitment department provides advice and counselling services to prospective students and applicants. It also promotes awareness of undergraduate and general studies programmes as well as student recruitment activities. Student Admissions Department (SA) The Student Admissions department handles matters relating to the admission of students to undergraduate and general studies programmes, credit exemptions, and student awards including scholarships, sponsorships and study grants. Office of Academic Services (OAS) The Office of Academic Services provides academic-related services to faculty, associates, and students. Agnes Kwang, Director, OAS The departments under its purview are: Associates Administration Department (AA) The Associates Administration department manages the contract issuance of all associate appointments. It works with the four Schools on the recruitment and appointment of associates, and to ensure that payments are made to associates upon completion of services. 5
Curriculum Administration Department (CA) The Curriculum Administration Department oversees the course registration exercises and manages the procurement and distribution of course materials to faculty, associates and students. Examination Administration Department (EA) The Examination Administration Department is the custodian of examination results. It is responsible for the examination processes, the honours classification and commencement awards. Logistics and Scheduling Department (LS) The Logistics and Scheduling Department schedules course timetables and classroom resources, and day-to-day logistic support in day-to-day operations and delivery of class sessions. Student Records Department (SR) The Student Records Department is the custodian of students records and maintains the personal files (P-files) of all students at the University. It confirms graduation records for the issuance of transcripts and certificates. Office of Student and Alumni Relations (OSAR) The Office of Student and Alumni Relations acts as a bridge between UniSIM students and alumni on the one hand, and the schools and administrative departments on the other. Evelyn Chong, Director, OSAR The departments under its purview are: Alumni Relations Department (AR) The Alumni Relations Department acts as a link between UniSIM alumni and the University. It does this through organising alumni events and activities, as well as facilitating networking opportunities amongst alumni, students, and UniSIM. Student Support Department (SS) The Student Support Department acts as a first point of contact for UniSIM students. It manages the University s Student Support Hotline, and fosters bonds with students through events such as orientation activities for new students, as well as seminars and workshops. It also organises the University s convocation and graduation ceremonies. 6
Learning Services Cluster The Learning Services Cluster supports the teaching and delivery of high quality academic programmes through educational initiatives, innovative pedagogies and learning technologies. The Vice-President oversees the Educational Technology and Production (ETP) department and the Teaching and Learning Centre (TLC). Associate Professor Wong Yue Kee, Vice-President, Learning Services Educational Technology and Production (ETP) works with the four Schools to adopt appropriate educational technology in creating e-learning content, and facilitating the delivery of learning to our adult students anytime, anywhere. Kiang Tzy Peng, Director, ETP Teaching and Learning Centre (TLC) supports and trains the faculty to adequately equip them in their course delivery so as to promote excellence in teaching. Teaching and Learning Context in UniSIM UniSIM provides adult learners with opportunities to learn today, apply tomorrow. Our programmes are designed to allow our students to acquire specific skills and build expertise that are applicable to their workplace. In addition, many of our students come with a wealth of experience and industry knowledge which allow for enriching sessions of collaborative learning. As facilitators of learning, you should leverage on these unique qualities, industry experiences, and prior knowledge of your students, so that you may better help your students make the connection between textbook-based theory and real world practices. Roles and Responsibilities of Associates UniSIM depends on its core team of associate faculty to facilitate learning and knowledge acquisition among its adult learners. As an associate, you play an important role in supporting your students learning as an educator, mentor, and counsellor. You are expected to provide academic support to your students during the face-toface contact hours, through email correspondence, and telephone consultation. If you re an online instructor, you should set aside at least three hours of consultation each week, and to inform your students as to the specific day and time at which you re available for consultation. You should also reply to email queries within two working days. You are required to fulfill the terms of services, as listed in your contract. For more information, please refer to the List of Services under the General Information tab on the Associate Portal, and the Associate Faculty Handbook (also found on the Associate Portal). 10
UniSIM Support for Associates You may approach the associated departments if you have any questions regarding the following areas: 1. Teaching support The Learning Services cluster namely, Educational Technology and Production (ETP) and Teaching and Learning Centre (TLC) provides online training courses, workshops, and talks for associates looking to hone their skills in key areas such as technological tools available for education or particular teaching strategies. TLC also produces monthly Blog Post and a biannual digital magazine, Communitas, that discuss techniques that you may be able to adopt and implement in your teaching. 2. Administrative support Associates Administration (AA) and Logistics and Scheduling (LS) provide administrative support to associates in matters such as issuance of contracts and scheduling of classes. 3. Technical support Educational Technology and Production (ETP) and Campus IT Services (CITS) provide technical support in the areas of MyUniSIM (Blackboard) and MyMail account. UniSIM Support for Students At UniSIM, supporting student learning is also of great importance. TLC developed online modules that focus on skills that are essential in meeting the demands of undergraduate studies. These are found in MyUniSIM Blackboard. Also included is a series of English proficiency assessments which students can use to evaluate their proficiency of the English language. Additionally, TLC faculty conduct study skills and academic writing workshops at the beginning of each semester. So do encourage your students to tap on these readily available resources. 11
