Bulletin No. SH/14 Spring-Flex Hangers Series SH/RSH Two Basic Designs Effective Isolation of Noise and Vibration Loads to 5,000 pounds Static Deflections to 5 inches Quickly and Easily Installed Color Coded Springs for Easy Identification Typical Applications Piping Air Handling Units Fans Duct Work Suspended Ceilings Vibration Mountings & Controls, Inc. P.O.Box 270, Bloomingdale, New Jersey 07403

Spring-Flex Hangers Series SH/RSH VMC Spring-Flex hangers are offered in two basic designs Series SH spring hangers designed to isolate low frequency vibrations and Series RSH combination spring in series with a neoprene element designed for critical locations where it is important to isolate both noise & vibration. VMC Spring Flex hangers are necessary to prevent vibration in piping and equipment from being transmitted to the building structure. We recommend that Spring Flex hangers be used for all suspended piping in equipment rooms or 50 ft from vibrating equipment, whichever is greater. To avoid reducing the effectiveness of the equipment isolators, at least 3 of the first hangers from the equipment should provide the same deflection as the equipment isolators. The remaining hangers should be type SH or RSH with.75 inch deflection. In order to reduce installation labor costs, Vibration Mountings and Controls has designed a revolutionary line of hangers that incorporate a clevis or trapeze hanger combined with vibration isolation in one product. See our series CIH, CIR, TIH or TIR for details. To prevent load transfer to the equipment flanges when the piping system is filled, VMC has designed pre-compressed and pre-positioning hangers which should be installed at the first three hanger locations adjacent to the equipment. These designs insure that the weight of the piping is kept off isolated equipment in order to maintain alignment, protect flexible connectors, and keep equipment isolators from becoming overloaded. When used in seismic applications, VMC hangers should be used in conjunction with Series SCR seismic cable restraints which restrain suspended piping and equipment during an earthquake. 2

They incorporate a color coded steel spring for ease of identification in the field. Load ranges from 21 lb to 5000 lb and up to 5 inches of static deflection offer a wide variety of choices to insure proper support. Series SH-30A offers all ofthe above features plus the capability for the lower hanger rod to swing approximately 30 to compensate for rod misalignment. The 30 misalignment capability insures that the rod does not short circuit the hanger by coming in contact with the hanger box. When isolating ductwork and suspended ceilings, our Series SHSC can be utilized. These hangers incorporate eyebolt hardware to accommodate duct strap connections. How To Specify VMC Series SH Spring Hangers Spring-Flex hangers shall consist of a color-coded steel spring with a neoprene and steel washer which will properly distribute the load on the spring. For 30 misalignment capability, spring diameters and hanger box lower hole sizes shall be of sufficient size to permit the hanger rod to swing approximately 30 before contacting the box. Springs shall have a minimum additional travel to solid equal to 50% of the rated deflection. Hangers which are to be used with flat iron duct straps will be provided with eye bolts on both ends. Spring-Flex hangers shall be Series SH, SH-30A, as manufactured by Vibration Mountings and Controls, Inc. & SIZE in. lbs. lbs./in. Series SHP incorporates a load bearing plate within the hanger box which keeps suspended piping at a fixed elevation during installation and start-up. Once the system is filled, the load is transferred from the plate to the spring insuring minimal movement in the piping. This design insures that the weight of the piping is kept off isolated equipment in order to maintain alignment, protect flexible connectors, and keep equipment isolators from becoming overloaded. Series SHP is capable of supporting loads up to 5000 lb and offers up to 2 inches of static deflection. INSTALLATION INSTRUCTION SERIES SHP AND RSHP HANGERS 1. Hangers are inserted in the hanger rods, or series SHP may be fastened directly to the structure. For best results, hangers should be located near the ceiling. 2. Piping or equipment should be hung at its proper elevation by inserting threaded rod up through the spring and suspended from the plate supplied in the hanger box. This plate is designed to maintain suspended equipment and piping at a fixed elevation during installation regardless of load changes. 3. The adjustment nut is provided to transfer the load to the spring after the piping system has been filled with water or the equipment is totally installed and level. 4. Turn the adjusting nut clockwise one complete turn on each hanger until the load is transferred from the supporting plate to the spring. How To Specify VMC Type SHP/RSHP Hangers Spring-Flex hangers shall consist of color-coded steel spring in series with a neoprene element molded in specific colors for proper identification of rated load capacity. Hanger design shall incorporate a means for supporting the suspended equipment or piping at a fixed elevation during installation regardless of load changes as well as a means for transferring the load to the spring. They incorporate a color coded steel spring in series with a neoprene rubber element. This combination is excellent for critical applications where it is important to isolate both vibration and structure-borne noise. Load ranges from 21 lb to 5000 Ib., and up to 5 inches of static deflection offer a wide variety of choices to insure proper support. Series RSH-30A offers all of the above features plus the capability for the lower hanger rod to swing approximately 30 to compensate for rod misalignment. The 30 misalignment capability insures that the rod does not short circuit the hanger by coming in contact with the hanger box. When isolating ductwork and suspended ceilings, our Series RSHSC can be utilized. These hangers incorporate eyebolt hardware to accommodate duct strap connections. How To Specify VMC Series RSH Hangers Spring-Flex hangers shall consist of a steel spring in series with a.2 inch (minimum) deflection neoprene element. Springs shall be color coded, and elastomer element molded in specific colors for proper identification of rated load capacity. Springs shall have a minimum additional travel to solid equal to 50% of the rated deflection. Pipe isolators shall have spring diameters and hanger box lower hole sizes of sufficient size to permit the hanger rod to swing approximately 30 before contacting the box. Hangers which are to be used with flat iron duct straps will be provided with eye bolts on both ends. Spring-Flex hangers shall be series RSH/RSH30A as manufactured by Vibration Mountings and Controls, Inc. Series RSHP incorporates a load bearing plate within the hanger box which keeps suspended piping at a fixed elevation during installation and start-up. Once the system is filled, the load is transferred from the plate to the spring insuring minimal movement in the piping. This design insures that the weight of the piping is kept off isolated equipment in order to maintain alignment, protect flexible connectors, and keep equipment isolators from becoming overloaded. Series RSHP is capable of supporting loads up to 5000 Ibs and offers up to 2 inches of static deflection. INSTALLATION INSTRUCTION SERIES RSHP HANGERS 1. & SIZE in. lbs. lbs.in. INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS FOR VMC SERIES RH/SH/RSH HANGERS 1. Piping and equipment should be hung at its proper elevation by using temporary fixtures that can be removed after vibration hangers are installed and adjusted. 2. Hangers may be fastened directly to the structure (be sure not to short circuit the neoprene element in RSH series when fastening to the ceiling) or inserted in the hanger rods. For best results hangers should be located at or near the ceiling. 3. Install hangers 4. Turn nut on lower rod assembly clockwise one complete turn on each hanger. Repeat this procedure until temporary hanging fixtures are loose and load of piping or equipment is suspended completely on the vibration hangers. 5. Remove temporary hanger fixtures and level piping or equipment by taking additional turns on the lower hanger rod nut clockwise to raise, counter clockwise to lower as required. Vibration Mountings & Controls Inc. s ongoing product development, marketing and distribution prowess has made us a world-wide leader in the design and fabrication of vibration isolation components and damping materials used in the heating, ventilating, air conditioning, petrochemical, chemical, manufacturing, utility, construction and transportation industries. Computer supported engineering and the sophisticated skills of the VMC craftsmen continue to insure correctly designed and accurately manufactured product reliability for the vibration isolation of heating, ventilating and air conditioning pumps, fans and compressors, heavy rotating machinery, diesel engines and railroad, off-highway and military vehicles YOUR VMC FIELD ENGINEER IS: PIPING AND DUCTWORK ISOLATION (Design specification) Vibration isolation hangers shall be positioned as close as possible to the structure without coming in contact with any object (including the structure). Hanger rods shall not contact any object which would short circuit the isolator. Parallel running pipes may be hung together on a trapeze which is isolated from the building. Do not mix vibration isolated and non-isolated pipes on the same trapeze. Attention must be paid to movements of piping caused be expansion and contraction. Isolation hangers shall be installed for all piping in equipment rooms or for 50 ft. from vibrating equipment, whichever is greater. To avoid reducing the effectiveness of equipment isolators, at least three of the first hangers from the equipment should provide the same deflection as the equipment isolators, with a maximum limitation of 2-inch deflection. The remaining hangers shall be spring or combination spring and rubber with a minimum of 0.75-inch deflection. To prevent load transfer to the equipment flanges when the piping system is filled, the first three hangers adjacent to the equipment shall be the positioning type. Floor supports for piping in equipment rooms and adjacent to isolated equipment shall use restrained vibration isolators. They should be selected according to the guidelines for hangers. Vertical riser supports for pipe 4" diameter and larger shall be isolated from the structure using VMC Series VCS pipe sleeves and Series MDPA anchors and guides. All ductwork over four square feet face area located in the mechanical equipment room(s) shall be isolated with type SH hangers with a minimum of 0.75 inch deflection. Emergency generator exhaust shall be isolated with SH hangers with a minimum of 0.75-inch deflection. Vibration Mountings & Controls, Inc. An Aeroflex, Inc.
