welcome to the heart of our collections These collections bear the exceptional imprint of one of the rare authentic Manufactures, meaning a watch company that develops and produces its movements in-house. Welcome to the land of Zenith. A land where daring reigns supreme, where pleasure blossoms by making dreams come true, where authenticity flows naturally from a rich history stretching over almost 150 years. A Manufacture still located in the very spot where it was born, and which currently accommodates no less than 80 watchmaking professions. An incubator for some of the most virtuoso talents of their generation who perpetuate the work begun by Georges Favre-Jacot in 1865, mastering each and every gesture in a free-spirited approach to creating mechanical feats blending noble traditions with the avant-garde. From 20 th century marine chronometers to the flight instruments that accompanied the early days of aviation, along with the first ever integrated automatic chronograph, all Zenith creations reflect this unremitting determination to explore uncharted territory. While I currently enjoy the honour of serving as guardian of this horological temple, my role is first and foremost that of a go-between Someone who jealously safeguards yesterday s legacy so as to nurture tomorrow. It is with this in mind that we have undertaken a sweeping renovation of our manufacturing premises that will be completed by our 150 th anniversary in 2015. While the most sophisticated technologies are implemented in this process, we have chosen to preserve the historical architecture of the site, since it is within these red and white brick walls that some of the finest pages in the Zenith legend have been written and will be for many decades to come. Through these pages, I invite you on a journey to the heart of this legend and wish you a wonderful discovery! Jean-Frédéric Dufour President and CEO * 4 * * 5 *
AT THE PINNACLE OF THE WATCHMAKING FIRMAMENT Transcending the visionary spirit It all began with a man, Georges Favre-Jacot, together with a dream, a destiny. That of creating the first industrial Manufacture in history, capable of making the most reliable and accurate watches ever imagined and of thereby changing the face of 19 th century watchmaking. Thus transformed from chrysalis to full-fledged butterfly, it has remained so ever since, buoyed up by the men and women who perpetuate the visionary spirit of Georges Favre-Jacot. Artisans with golden hands, authentic witnesses to creative daring who follow their own star in daily fulfilling the destiny of one of the most innovative manufacturers for almost 150 years.
A T T H E P I N N A C L E O F T H E W A T C H M A K I N G F I R M A M E N T Georges Favre-Jacot FOUNDER OF ZENITH In 1865, Georges Favre- Jacot revolutionised watch production processes. By bringing together all the watchmaking professions under one roof, he invented the very idea of an industrial Manufacture. It is within these walls still steeped in history that all Zenith watches are made, mechanical marvels combining grand traditions and avant-garde technologies. BIRTH OF THE FIRST EVER INDUSTRIAL WATCHMAKING MANUFACTURE In the 19 th century in the region of Le Locle, large numbers of watchmakers worked at home in various scattered workshops with no direct links to each other. Working on the principle that all parts of a watch are interdependent, the youthful Georges Favre-Jacot decided to unite all watchmaking professions under a single roof. The first industrial watchmaking Manufacture was born. Bringing together the entire range of skills led to substantial progress in the area of production techniques especially since Georges Favre-Jacot was constantly developing new production machinery and procedures. He took a new leap forward in terms of watches reliability and precision by developing the concepts of automation and interchangeable components. Results followed swiftly and some of the most accurate watches ever made began to emerge from the Manufacture in Le Locle, forever sealing the destiny of Zenith as inextricably bound up with chronometric (precision-timing) performance. a destiny governed by chronometric performance As early as 1899, the Manufacture launched its first pocket chronograph, and one year later won the Gold Medal at the Paris Universal Exposition or World s Fair. It was in 1911 that it definitively adopted the name of Zenith a term referring to the highest point in the sky and symbolising the level of excellence that the brand with the guiding star has never ceased to pursue. During that same period and through to the 1960s, Zenith developed the onboard instruments equipping aircraft, cars, trains and lorries, thereby accompanying some of the finest conquests such as Louis Blériot s first airborne Channel crossing in 1909. In parallel, the Manufacture with the guiding star shone in chronometry competitions, winning no less than 2,333 prizes between 1903 and the late 1960s the golden age of chronometers a tally making it the most titled brand of all time. Over 600 movement variations compose its rich heritage and testify to the impressive wealth of expertise acquired to date. From onboard instruments to wristwatches, along with pocket-watches, over 300 patents represent as many milestones in the progress of time measurement. Zenith notably launched in 1948 its famous Calibre 135, a chronometer movement featuring a small seconds display and measuring just 29.3 mm in diameter, that was to be rewarded by no less than 235 chronometry prizes. In 1960, another legend was born: Calibre 5011 K. Setting new precision records in its category, it would equip marine chronometers, pocket chronometers and clocks, as well as the famous Pilot Montre d Aéronef Type 20. El Primero FOREVER THE FIRST It was in 1969 that Zenith went down in history by launching the calibre named El Primero meaning the first in Esperanto that marked a watershed in contemporary watchmaking history. It was the first ever automatic integrated chronograph movement. Designed as an inseparable whole, it had no additional module but instead featured a construction built around a column wheel and a central rotor mounted on ball bearings. Better still, it beat at the high frequency of 10 vibrations per second, making it the world s most accurate series-produced chronograph to this very day. To make things even more complicated, it had an over 50-hour power reserve and since impossible is an unknown concept for Zenith, it was also equipped with a date and measured just 6.5 mm thick and 29.33 mm in diameter. The combination of these various complex elements meant it took a full seven years to solve this sophisticated equation, four years past the 100 th anniversary of the Manufacture that the movement launch was initially intended to celebrate. SETTING LIFE INTO MOTION In-house mastery of each stage of development and production enables Zenith to break free of overly restrictive codes and to create original complications marrying noble traditions with the avant-garde. A pledge of authenticity for exceptional models that spring to life under the skilled hands of the artisans in the Manufacture at Le Locle. * 10 * * 11 *
A T T H E P I N N A C L E O F T H E W A T C H M A K I N G F I R M A M E N T A RENAISSANCE AMID THE QUARTZ CRISIS Charles Vermot THE RELUCTANT WATCHMAKER-HERO In 1975, Charles Vermot hid the plans, parts and tools required to produce mechanical calibres in order to save them from destruction following the decision of the company that owned Zenith at the time to restrict its production to quartz watches only. When demand for mechanical watches picked up again in 1984, he revealed to Zenith the complete set of production means he had kept safe through the years, thus enabling the renewed production of the El Primero calibre. Even though he is reluctant to admit it, Charles Vermot s courageous act did indeed spark Zenith s renewal in 1984 with the revival of the El Primero calibre. After a temporary eclipse, the magic of fine mechanical movements appealed once more. In 1994, the Manufacture launched another movement that would find its place in the history books: the automatic ultra-thin Elite calibre. In 1999, Zenith joined the LVMH luxury group, and distinguished itself in 2003 by a new innovation that quickly asserted itself as one of its signatures: the Open concept. A dial aperture afforded fascinating views of the escapement of the El Primero calibre, revealing the enchantment of a mechanism oscillating at the exceptional speed of 36,000 vibrations per hour. Zenith, LEGENDARY BUILDER In 2009, the El Primero calibre celebrated its 40 th anniversary and a complete collection now bears its name. Since its birth, it has constantly evolved in step with countless original complications and mechanisms. The year 2009 witnessed another event, when the town of Le Locle was classed as a UNESCO world heritage site for its industrial architecture and urban planning, to which Zenith contributed by building the first ever industrial Manufacture in 1865. Loyal to its origins and its values, the brand has never left its birthplace. The El Primero Striking 10 th was introduced in 2010, representing a unique evolution of the jumping seconds principle. High frequency became visible, as the chronograph sweep seconds hand completes a dial rotation in 10 seconds, marking off each of its jumps on the 100 divisions engraved on the dial. The mechanical feats continued and in due course Zenith was awarded the Best Complicated Watch Prize at the 2011 Geneva Watchmaking Grand Prix (GPHG) for its Academy Christophe Colomb Equation of Time. The following year came the turn of the Pilot Big Date Special to distinguish itself at the GPHG. Meanwhile, the major renovation work on the Manufacture moves ahead, as Zenith tirelessly continues forging its destiny. * 12 * * 13 *
THE ART OF DETAIL EXCELLENCE GENERATES EMOTIONS At Zenith, each detail stems from technical, functional and aesthetic research that reflects the meticulous finishing of the timepieces born in the Manufacture. The work of experienced artisans representing no less than 80 professions, this extremely detailed attention dedicated to the movement as well as to the dial and case are all signature features of a Zenith watch. This has been true since 1865 and doubtless explains while the brand s star has continued to shine so brightly in the Fine Watchmaking firmament. Because the enduring strength of a Manufacture is inseparably entwined with the excellence it dedicates to developing and producing timepieces that are the stuff of dreams, the precise execution and the care lavished on each detail will determine the emotional force exuded by the watch. It is this quest for perfection that has guided the path of the Manufacture, since excellence naturally generates true emotions.
T H E A R T O F D E T A I L applying excellence to daily tasks Above and beyond a mere statement of intent, excellence is an integral part of daily reality at Zenith. There are no compromises and only the best is considered acceptable. While the strength of the Manufacture lies in regrouping a broad range of skills, its primary wealth lies in the men and women who master and pass them on. Their experience and their deft gestures are tokens of excellence, revealing the power of the craftsmanship they convey. Whatever the part produced, its hand finishing bears the guarantee of undeniable added value: it is the unmistakable signature of Fine Watchmaking. At Zenith, each movement is thus treated to the most refined finishing and decoration. Circular graining, bevelling, guilloché work and Côtes de Genève are all signs of the care devoted to parts of which some will remain forever hidden inside cases that are all crafted in keeping with Zenith s very own rules of excellence. VIRTUOSO ARTISANS SILICON ESCAPE-WHEEL OUTER DIAMETER 5 mm WEIGHT 0.003 g Beveller, engraver, polisher, gemsetter: the work of these artisans with their golden fingers fascinates through its blend of virtuosity and infinitely rigorous gestures. Each element, however tiny, is important here, since nothing must be left to chance in ensuring the perfectly smooth running of the watch and in releasing the emotional strength inherent in a Fine Watchmaking timepiece. T H E A R T O F D E T A I L METICULOUS MANUAL WORKMANSHIP From hand polishing moon-phase discs to meticulously fashioning the curve of the hands, the Manufacture is a temple of fine details and of care devoted to parts that are sometimes too small to be seen without a magnifying glass. All the artisans master skills nurtured by their own experience in order to make their own contribution to the finished work. Like all parts involved in making a watch, the diamonds selected by Zenith meet the highest quality standards and take into account not only the cut, size and carat weight, but also the colour and clarity of the gemstone. Keenly attentive to the honesty, legality, transparency and good management that must govern trading in precious stones, the Manufacture Zenith has put in place tried and tested processes that have earned it certification with the Responsible Jewellery Council (RJC), an organisation dedicated to upholding the highest ethical, social and environmental standards. While undoubtedly masterpieces of technical brilliance, Zenith timepieces are first and foremost living creations that beat, vibrate and touch the human heart. While their mechanical complexity is astounding in itself, the magic only truly begins to weave its spell when the entire watch exudes an aesthetic power brimming with emotions. In revealing this power, no detail must be left to chance and such is precisely the mission pursued by Zenith since 1865. a tribute to bold roots Capturing the essence of a centuries-old tradition A return to essentials. Moons have waned and waxed, seconds have slipped by, and yet they are still there, captured in the perpetual running of the movement. An anthem to the best-counted hours. Certain people have gained knowledge of discreet treasures that retain their perpetual radiance. Shining inside cases that each individual can carry around with them, the precious magic is passed on through the undiminished admiration of time-honoured skills. Before leaving our Manufacture in Switzerland, our watches undergo numerous rigorous quality and performance tests, some of them lasting several days. That is why your watch is guaranteed against any manufacturing flaw for two years as of its date of purchase. You can also obtain an additional third year of guarantee by registering on our website at www.zenith-watches.com MAINTENANCE Your Zenith watch is equipped with a complex Manufacture movement entirely developed and produced in-house by Zenith. The lifespan of a Zenith watch may extend over several generations, provided it is given the indispensable care required to preserve it. Having your watch regularly maintained contributes to maintaining its exceptional performances as well as to restoring its timeless visual appearance. To ensure it runs smoothly over the long term and also to verify its water resistance, your watch must be submitted for periodic maintenance.
