If you are not a U.S. Citizen, please speak with an Instructor about the requirements you must meet before you may begin flight training. Revised September 2011 2

The Sport Pilot & Private Pilot Certificate When learning to fly and depending on the selection you make, you will be working toward obtaining either your Sport Pilot or Private Pilot Certificate. These certificates are similar to obtaining a driver s license. They will allow you to fly most anywhere in the country, day or night (night for Private Pilot only), in good weather. For the Sport Pilot Certificate, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) requires a minimum of 20 hours of flight time, at least 15 of which must be with an instructor. There are certain requirements that must be fulfilled (e.g. various types of landings and takeoffs, particular maneuvers, trips (cross-country) over 25 miles etc.) during those hours of flying time. While 20 hours are required, most students average 30 to 40 hours, because of school, work and family obligations, before they obtain their Sport Certificate. As a Sport Pilot, you may: Fly only in a Light Sport Airplane (LSA) Fly and take along one family member or friend Fly in good weather, daytime only With additional training, fly to airports in busy and complex airspace For the Private Pilot Certificate, the FAA requires a minimum of 40 hours of flight time, at least 20 of which must be with an instructor. There are certain requirements that must be fulfilled (e.g. various types of landings and takeoffs, particular maneuvers, trips (cross-country) over 50 miles etc.) during those hours of flying time. While 40 hours are required, most students average 55 to 65 hours, because of school, work and family obligations, before they obtain their Private Certificate. As a Private Pilot, you may: Fly and take along family or friends Fly in good weather, day or night Earn you instrument rating - fly in conditions unsuitable for visual flight Fly to airports in busy and complex airspace Training with Chester County Aviation for your Pilot Certificate Chester County Aviation trains you for your Pilot Certificate using a Web-Based Instruction (WBI) course developed by Cessna Aircraft Company in conjunction with King Schools. Our instructors teach within the framework of this structured program and guide you through the requirements for your Pilot Certificate. The majority of your ground training will be provided by the Cessna WBI curriculum, combined with pre- and post-flight discussions with your instructor to answer your questions and provide specific information about your training aircraft. Revised September 2011 3

The WBI kit includes your course log-in, a pilot logbook, flight computer, and an aircraft information manual. This program provides the structure for training and progress on the way to your Private Pilot License. Advantages to the WBI include: You can study anywhere you have internet access at home, work or traveling; You are able to demonstrate your comprehension of the material being taught and reinforce your knowledge through interactive exercises; You will learn in a comfortable environment at your own pace. You and your instructor will work together, using the WBI course as a learning tool and to track your progress. The information covered in the on-line lessons and video segments prepares you for your flight lessons, making those lessons more efficient. At the completion of your ground training, you will be ready for the FAA knowledge exam. For Private Pilot, an FAA physical examination is required during your training and prior to solo flight. This is a basic physical that tests your eyes, ears, reflexes, etc. We recommend you get your medical certificate as early in your training as possible. Many doctors in the area are FAA Medical Examiners. See us for one convenient to you. While no medical certificate is required for Sport Pilot, you must have a valid state issued driver s license. Flight training for both the Sport Pilot and the Private Pilot is divided into three basic stages. In Stage One, you will learn the basic flight maneuvers, takeoffs and landings and emergency procedures. At the completion of this stage, you will be ready for and make your first solo flight. Stage 2 introduces the key principals of navigation and special takeoff and landing techniques that you may use at different airports. You will also learn about the unique considerations for flight at night. During this stage, you will fly to other airports, both with and without your flight instructor. In the final stage, flight proficiency is improved for your final flight review and flight test recommendation. All solo students and aircraft renters at CCA are required to have Non-Owned Aircraft (Renter s) Insurance for all solo flights. This coverage protects you in the event of an incident from the financial responsibility for our insurance policy deductible on each aircraft (currently $5000). Revised September 2011 4

Examinations for Your Pilot Certificate During your ground and flight training, you will be preparing for the FAA airman knowledge (written), oral and practical examinations. The FAA knowledge exam consists of either 40 multiple-choice questions (for Sport Pilot), or 60 questions for Private Pilot, covering simple aerodynamics and theory, aircraft operations, FAA regulations, weather and navigation. When you have completed your ground and flight training, you will take your Practical Test. This test consists of an oral examination and a flight test with a FAA designated examiner. Upon successful completion of the exam, you will receive your Pilot Certificate. Both the FAA Airman Knowledge Exam and the Practical test can be administered at the Chester County Airport. Certificates & Ratings you can obtain with CCA Each certificate/rating (except for the Student Pilot Certificate) requires a flight test. Student Pilot Certificate You are a student pilot from the time you begin your first lesson until you obtain your Sport or Private Pilot Certificate. As a student pilot, you are under the supervision and guidance of your instructor. The Student Pilot Certificate is required for all students. The Student Pilot / Medical Certificate is required for students seeking the private pilot certificate. Sport Pilot Certificate This certificate allows you to fly throughout the United States in a designated Light Sport Aircraft (LSA) with no more than one passenger and in daytime only. You cannot fly for compensation or hire, or when the weather does not satisfy certain minimum conditions. Other restrictions apply speak with an instructor for more information. Private Pilot Certificate This certificate allows you to fly throughout the United States (and other countries, with certain restrictions) with passengers, day or night. You cannot fly for compensation or hire, or when the weather does not satisfy certain minimum conditions. Instrument Rating The instrument rating opens up a new dimension of flying for the private pilot. Low clouds and precipitation may no longer prevent you from flying to your destination. Again, a structured curriculum is used for your training, with the Instrument Web Based Instruction course (I-WBI) from Cessna. Ground training is accomplished by self-study with the I-WBI and support from your instructor. Normally, instrument flight training is conducted in our Cessna 172 s although other aircraft are available. Revised September 2011 5

Commercial Pilot Certificate This certificate allows a pilot to fly for compensation or hire. To obtain the Commercial Certificate, you must pass an additional knowledge program and perform a number of maneuvers that display your skill in handling an aircraft. Multi-Engine Rating This rating allows you to fly planes with two or more engines. The Private and Commercial certificates are broken up into two categories: single & multi-engine. Certified Flight Instructor There are three instructor certificates that you can earn at CCA: Certified Flight Instructor Airplane (CFI-A) This certificate allows you to teach pilots who wish to obtain their Sport Pilot, Private Pilot or Commercial Pilot certificates. To become a CFI, you must hold a Commercial Pilot Certificate with ratings for Airplane Single-Engine and Instrument Airplane. Certified Flight Instructor- Instrument (CFI-I) This allows you to teach pilots who wish to obtain their instrument rating. Certified Flight Instructor - Multi-Engine (MEI) This allows you to teach pilots who wish to obtain their multi-engine rating. To become a MEI, you must hold a Commercial Pilot Certificate with ratings for Airplane Multi-Engine and Instrument Airplane. Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) Certificate The ATP is necessary to be a captain for hire in an air carrier operation or certain corporate positions.
