Get started with Jabber Cisco Jabber for Windows Cisco Jabber is a communication tool that allows you access to presence, instant messaging (IM), voice, video, voice messaging, desktop sharing, and conferencing. Operating System Requirements In order to provide the best experience, these minimum requirements are desired: Windows 7 (-bit and 6-bit) Windows 8 (-bit and 6-bit, Windows 8 RT not supported) Windows 8. (-bit and 6-bit) Download Jabber Visit the Cisco Jabber Software page for the latest downloads: http://www.cmu.edu/computing/software/all/cisco-jabber/ Install Jabber WIRED: Connect to a wired campus network. WIRELESS: Connect to the CMU-SECURE wireless network. Launch the Jabber install application. The installation wizard appears. Click Accept and Install on the Cisco Jabber installation wizard. A progress bar of the installation appears. Note: A dialog may appear requesting permission to install Cisco Jabber on your computer, click Yes. Once the installation is complete, select Launch Cisco Jabber and click Finish.
Logging In and Out To log in, first time users must enter AndrewUserID@uc.cmu.edu and click Continue. Complete login by entering your Andrew password. To log out, click File > Sign Out. GENERAL SETTINGS Change Your Status From the Status Message area, click the dropdown button. Select the status you want to display. Create a Personal Status From the Status Message area, place your cursor in the status message field and enter your new status message. Note: You can create up to three custom status messages for each availability state. Search or Call Bar From the Search or Call Bar, enter a phone number to call or enter a person s name. As you type, results will appear for your selection. DOCKED WINDOW You can optionally show the docked window at the top of your screen to quickly access common features. Show/Hide the Docked Window Open the main Jabber window. Click the Settings (Gear) icon, then click View > Show docked window. Note: Deselect this option to hide the docked window, if desired. Docked Window Overview Search or Call Bar Calls (Recents) Voice Messages Display Jabber (Hub) Window Adjust Preferences You can adjust options for general preferences, chats, audio, video, status, sounds/alerts, privacy, and calendar integration. From the toolbar, click File > Options. Select the tab of the feature you d like to change and follow the instructions. Click Apply, then OK to save the new options selected OR click Cancel to discard changes.
CONTACTS Add Contacts Note: You can add contacts within Jabber as long as the person has an active jabber account. If the contact does not have an account, the directory name displays grayed out and any options do not appear. From the Search Bar, enter the name of the person you d like to add as a contact. As you type, results will appear for your selection. When the person you d like to add appears, hover over the name and click the plus symbol that appears. The Add Contacts window appears. Add additional contacts (if desired) and choose a group assignment from the dropdown. Note: To create a new group, click New Group, enter a Group name, and click Create. The new group is automatically selected in the group dropdown. Click Add. The contact displays in the specified group. Remove Contacts Right-click on a contact name. An options menu appears for the contact selected. Select Remove. The contact no longer appears in the list. Create a Custom Contact Group Click the Settings (Gear) icon, then click File > New > Group. From the Create a New Group dialog box, enter a new group name and click Create. OPTIONAL: Drag a contact into the new group. Note: To delete a group, right-click on the group and select Remove. CHATS Start a Chat Find a contact to chat with from the list. Double-click the contact or right-click and select Chat. A chat window appears. Type a message in the text area and press enter. Chat Controls From a chat window, click any of the chat control buttons above the text area to: Change the font type, size, and style Change the font color Add emoticons to the chat Start a file transfer Transfer Files From a chat window, click the Send a File (paperclip) icon. Browse to and select the file you d like to transfer. Click Send. Start a Group Chat From a Chat window, click the Add Participants icon. Enter the name of the contact you want to add to the chat and enter a chat topic (if desired). Click Start.
CALLS AND VOICEMAIL Start or Review a Call Start a Call from the contact list: Right-click on a contact. Click Call. Start a Call from the search bar: Enter the name of the person you want to call. Hover over the contact, click the phone icon, and select a number to call. Review Calls: From the Recents tab, select the All or Missed option to view either all or missed calls. Hover over a call and click the phone icon to return the call. Click Clear All to clear the list of recent calls. Phone and Call Forwarding Preferences MEETINGS (CALENDAR) Add a Calendar You can add Microsoft Outlook, IBM Lotus Notes, or Google Calendar to view your meetings or appointments on Jabber. You also have the option to integrate WebEx. Click the Settings (Gear) icon, then click File > Options > Calendar. Select the calendar you would like to integrate and click OK. Restart Jabber to to apply the change. Click the Meetings tab and follow any dialog box instructions that appear to link your calendar account (as applicable) View a Meeting From the meetings tab, use the left and right arrows OR the click the calendar icon to choose a date. View summarized details in the Meetings tab or click More Details for all information regarding a meeting. You can use the phone controls to switch where you want to receive calls (computer or phone). You can also disable phone services. To forward calls: Click the Phone and Call Forwarding Preferences icon. From the Forward Calls To option, select Voicemail or Add a New number (and enter 9 then the number). Review Voice Messages From the Voice Messages tab, click the play button next to any individual or number s voice message. Right-click on any message to Create custom contact, View profile, Mark as Unread, or Delete. 5
