Personal Emergency Evacuation Plan. A Personal Emergency Evacuation Plan (PEEP) is required for all staff and students unable to self-evacuate in an emergency. Provision for staff/students/visitors who are unable to selfevacuate is the responsibility of the organiser of the class/lecture/event/meeting. Disabled Access Guide for the Pleasance Sports Centre and Gym. T his building is designed for, or has been adapted for the use of persons in wheelchairs, persons who have difficulty with mobility or are infirm. Seating is available. Accessible and standard toilets are also available. Introduction. The Pleasance complex houses two multi-purpose sports halls, catering for a diverse range of indoor sports - everything from badminton to ultimate frisbee. There are also a number of sports-specific areas including: Dance studios Squash courts with glass-backings Boxing and martial arts areas Archery and rifle ranges Climbing/ bouldering walls. Location. The Pleasance Sports Centre is located on The Pleasance in central Edinburgh. The building is located within the city centre and is within one mile of the main halls of residence at Pollock Halls. The nearest railway line is at Waverley Station in the city Centre. The nearest bus stops are located on Holyrood Road approximately 165 metres from the Pleasance Sports Centre. Numerous bus services stop on Holyrood Road. Details of timetables are available from Lothian Buses, from their offices within the city and online from www.mybustracker.co.uk. Persons with mobility difficulties arriving by vehicle can access the the Pleasance Sports Centre from The Pleasance, the Cowgate and Holyrood Road. Please note that all pedestrian access routes leading to The Pleasance Sports Centre incorporate a steep gradient. Page 4.

Parking. There are numerous parking bays around The Pleasance but no free parking; all parking bays being permit or pay and display. Pay and Display Parking. The closest City of Edinburgh Council pay and display parking is located outwith 130 metres of the building on Roxburgh Street. Please note that all pay and display parking is situated on a cobbled surface and is not recommended for wheelchair users without assistance. See Location Map. Disabled Parking Bays. There are two disabled parking bays located at the Pleasance Sports Centre and there is ample parking along The Pleasance for disabled badge holders. Please note that The Pleasance is on a steep gradient and offers a limited number of dropped kerbs. The first disabled parking bay is located within the University car park to the front of the building. This bay is on a shallow gradient and its surface is comprised of granite setts. There is a dropped kerb within close proximity to the bay which provides access to the adjacent footpath. Disabled parking bay image. The second disabled parking bay is located on a level tarmac surface to the side of the building. Please note that there are no level access routes to the main entrance from this disabled parking bay. There is a wheelchair access point to the Basement Floor sports hall located adjacent to this disabled parking bay. See Outside Access for more information. Disabled parking bay image. Page 6.

University Car Parks. There are two University car parks located at the Pleasance Sports Centre and there are additional University car parks located within close proximity to the building. See Location Map. The closest University car park is located to the front of the building and can be accessed directly from The Pleasance. This is a small car park with a limited number of parking bays and a single disabled parking bay. The car park is on a shallow gradient and the surface is a mixture of tarmac/ granite setts. The second University car park is located to the side of the building and can be accessed from The Pleasance. This car park has a fairly level tarmac surface and a good number of parking bays. Please note that there are no level access routes to the front of the building. If you do not hold a valid permit and require use of a University parking bay, it is recommended that contact is made with your host or the Transport & Parking Office prior to making your journey. Outside Access. There are four entrances to the Pleasance Sports Centre. See Floor Plans for locations. Entrance 1. This entrance is located to the front of the building on a level paved surface and is the main entrance to the Pleasance Sports Centre. Entrance 1 provides access to the Ground Floor reception and can be accessed via a flight of paved steps or a ramp from the adjacent footpath. Steps leading to the entrance incorporate contrasting strips but do not incorporate handrails. The two stage ramp leading to Entrance 1 incorporates a rest stop between each stage and a handrail to one side. Please note that the first stage of this ramp has a moderate gradient which can be negotiated with care. Entrance 1 image. Ramp leading to Entrance 1 image. Entrance 1 consists of a secure set of automatic glazed double doors. These doors lead to a small vestibule area with a recessed matwell and a single width automatic glazed door. Please note that the external door incorporates a raised threshold and that all doors will permit the passage of a wheelchair. Raised threshold at the external doorway image. Entrance 2. Please note that there is no level access to Entrance 2. This entrance is located to the front of the building on a level paved surface and is for staff use only. Entrance 2 provides access to the Ground Floor of the building and can be accessed via a flight of stone steps from the adjacent footpath. Steps leading to the entrance do not incorporate contrasting nosings but do incorporate handrails to both sides. Entrance 2 consists of a secure single width timber door. This door opens inward and incorporates door handles at an accessible height. From this entrance there is access to the staff offices and the sports centre reception via a short corridor. This entrance is located within the Pleasance Courtyard on a level granite sett surface. Entrance 3 provides level access to The Trust Upper Hall on the First Floor of the building via an internal platform lift. Entrance 3 can be accessed from the courtyard via an uneven concrete surface and a stone archway. See Location Map for more details. Entrance 3 consists of a secure single width glazed door. This door opens outward, will permit the passage of a wheelchair and leads to an internal platform lift. Entrance 4. Please note that this entrance remains locked at all times and is not recommended for wheelchair users without assistance. This entrance is located to the side of the building on a shallow paved gradient. This entrance provides access to the Basement Floor sports Hall and is only available to wheelchair users upon request. There is a disabled parking bay located within 30 metres of this entrance. Entrance 4 can be accessed from the disabled parking bay via two steep paved gradients. Steep paved gradient image. Entrance 4 consists of a secure set of timber double doors. These doors lead to a vestibule area and an additional set of timber double doors. All doors open outwards, will permit the passage of a wheelchair and incorporate glass panels/ door handles at an accessible height. If you require use of this access point, it is recommended that contact be made with your host or the reception prior to making your journey. See Contact information for more details. Internal Access. There is good level access to the Basement and Ground Floors of the building. There is also level access to parts of the First Floor and Basement 2. Please note there is currently no level access to the Second Floor of the building. See Floor Plans for more details. The majority of doors within corridors are held open to promote ease of access. Doors which remain closed are generally wide single width doors with glass panels and door handles at an accessible height. Access to the Sports Centre Facilities. There is one access point to the sports centre facilities. This access point is located adjacent to the reception and consists of three secure automatic glazed barriers. There are two standard barriers which can be activated with a swipe card and a single wheelchair accessible barrier. The wheelchair accessible barrier opens inward and is operated by the reception. Please note that visitors are required to register at the reception before proceeding to any other part of the building. The Basement Floor Sports Hall. Swipe access barriers image. Wheelchair accessible barrier image. Internal Ramps. There are internal ramps located on the Basement and Ground Floors of the building. All ramps incorporate a tactile/ contrasting surface and the majority incorporate a handrail to one side. There is a long corridor on the Ground Floor which incorporates several ramps with shallow gradients. There is a rest stop between each ramp and there is a handrail on either side of the corridor. Sports Centre Facilities. There is level access to the majority of facilities within the building but some are unsuitable for or inaccessible to wheelchair users and persons with reduced mobility. See Floor Plans for locations. The Sports Centre Facilities are outlined below: Changing Rooms. Standard Male and Female changing rooms are located on the Ground and First Floors. There is one accessible changing room located on the Ground Floor. The accessible changing room incorporates a shower, lockers and toilet facilities. Sports Hall. The Sports Hall is accessible to all users. Dance Studios. The Dance studios are accessible to all users but incorporate heavy doors. Body Circuit Gym. This gym is located on the First Floor and is not accessible to wheelchair users. Free Weights Gym (Vaults Basement 2). There is level access to this gym but floor surfaces are not suitable for wheelchair users. Cardiovascular Suite. There is level access to the side and rear of the cardiovascular suite for all users. Olympic Weights Gym. There is level access to this gym but facilities are not available to wheelchair users. Archery and Rifle Ranges. The Archery and Rifle ranges on the Basement Floor Mezzanine are accessible to all users. Climbing/Bouldering Walls. There is level access to the climbing facilities on the Ground Floor but there is no level access to the Bouldering Facilities on the First Floor. Body Conditioning (My Gym) The My Gym facility is accessible to all users but incorporates heavy doors. Boxing and Martial Arts Areas. These facilities are located on the Second Floor and are not accessible to wheelchair users. Fixed Weight (Eric Liddell) Gym. The Eric Liddell Gym is accessible to all users. Squash Courts with glass-backings. Squash courts are available to all users. Page 12.

FASIC Sports Medicine Centre. The F,A,S,I,C Sports Medicine Centre is located on the Ground Floor of the building. There is good level access to treatment rooms and accessible toilets located within the centre. The centre entrance consists of a single width timber door. This door opens inward and incorporates door handles/ glass panels at a wheelchair accessible height. There is an intercom located to the right of the doorway which is linked to the reception. Please note that the intercom is located above the recommended wheelchair accessible height. FASIC Reception. The F,A,S,I,C reception is located adjacent to the centre entrance. The reception desk is within comfortable reach of a wheelchair user but it is currently not fitted with an induction loop system. There is always a member of staff available at the reception to address any enquiries. FASIC reception image. Reception. The sports centre reception is located adjacent to Entrance 1 on the Ground Floor of the building. There is good circulation space throughout the reception and there is always a member of staff available to address any enquiries or assist with accessing the building. The reception desk is equipped with an induction loop system and is within comfortable reach of a wheelchair user. Main reception image. Page 13.

Platform Lifts. There are three platform lifts located within the Pleasance Sports Centre. All platform lift doors are operated manually and the controls are within comfortable reach of a wheelchair user. Platform Lift 1. The first platform lift is located on the Ground Floor of the building. This lift serves the climbing facilities. Platform Lift 2. The second platform lift is located on the Basement Floor of the building. This lift serves the Archery/ Rifle Ranges and the vaults weights gym. Platform Lift 3. The third platform lift is located adjacent to Access Point 1 on the Ground Floor of the building. This lift provides access to The Trust Upper Hall. Lifts. There is one lift within the Pleasance Sports Centre which provides access between the Basement and the First Floors. The second door to the rear of the lift is only used on the First Floor. The lift call points and car controls are at an accessible height. The lift car controls are within comfortable reach of a wheelchair user. The lift has braille markings on internal control panels. The lift has an alarm and emergency call point. There is contrast between the lift wall and floor surfaces. There is no induction loop system. There is an audible announcer. There is a mirror on the side wall. The lift car has an interior handrail. There is a visual floor indicator. The lighting level in the lift is good. Lift doors have pressure sensors. Page 14.

Stairs. There are nine staircases within the Pleasance Sports Centre. All staircases within this building are of a high standard with contrasting nosings on steps and a handrail to one or both sides. The majority of central staircases incorporate a tactile section prior to each flight of steps. See Floor Plans for locations. The nine staircases are listed below: Staircase 1. This is a staff only staircase serving office space to the left of the reception. Staircase 2. This staircase provides access to the First Floor female changing rooms and conference facilities. Staircase 3. This staircase provides access to the Basement Floor Sports Hall. Staircase 4. This staircase provides access to the Bouldering and Rowing Gym facilities on the First Floor. Staircase 5. This staircase provides access to the First Floor Body Circuit Gym from the Ground Floor. Staircase 6. This central staircase provides access between the Basement and First Floors. Staircase 7. This staircase provides access to the Trust Upper Hall from the Ground Floor. Staircase 8. This staircase acts as an escape route from the First Floor Studio. Staircase 9. This staircase acts as an escape route from the Ground Floor of the Sports Hall. Page 15.

Toilets. Toilets are available on floors as follows: Standard Male and Female toilets are located on the Basement and Ground Floors. There are additional Female standard toilets within changing rooms on the First Floor. Accessible toilets are located on the Ground Floor. There is an accessible shower located adjacent to the accessible toilets on the Ground Floor. See Floor Plans for locations. The accessible toilets incorporate the following: There is left hand lateral transfer space. The toilet within the accessible changing room has limited transfer space. There is good manoeuvring space. There are emergency pull chords. Doors open inward on the accessible toilet and slide on the accessible changing room. The widths of the accessible toilet doors are suitable for wheelchairs. There are suitable dropdown and support rails for transfer. The tap type is lever operation. There are no coat hooks.
