Things you should know about Thessaloniki Thessaloniki, is the second-largest city in Greece and the capital of the region of Macedonia. Its honorific title is Συµпρωτεύουσα (Symprotévousa), literally "co-capital", a reference to its historical status as the Συµβασιλεύουσα (Symvasilévousa) or "co-reigning" city of the Byzantine Empire, alongside Constantinople. Thessaloniki is Greece's second major economic, industrial, commercial and political centre, and a major transportation hub for the rest of south-eastern Europe. The city hosts an annual International Trade Fair, the International Thessaloniki Film Festival, and the largest bi-annual meeting of the Greek Diaspora. Thessaloniki is home to numerous notable Byzantine monuments, including the Paleochristian and Byzantine monuments of Thessaloniki, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, as well as several Ottoman and Sephardic Jewish structures.
Things to see in Thessaloniki The Archaeological Museum with exhibitions from Ancient to the Hellenistic and Roman Occupation Years of the Region. The Byzantine Museum with exhibitions from the Byzantine era and treasures from the Mount Athos, the Holy Mountain of Christian Orthodox around the world. The ancient Market at Aristotelous Square. The Church of Saint Dimitrious, the Patron Saint of the city. The Yedi Kule, Byzantine Fortress at the highest point of the city, with the panoramic view of the gulf of Thermaikos.
Things to see in Thessaloniki The most popular trips outside of the city are to the great beaches of the Halkidiki Peninsula. For day trips there are some great destinations at approximately an hour s drive: Vergina, Pella, Dion (with archaeological interest); Kaimaktsalan, 3-5 Pigadia, Seli, Elatochori (skiing centers); Kerkini lake, Agio Oros (Mt. Athos), Olympus Mountain (for sight seeing)
